Baby Bill (Chapter 2)

I was standing there showing her a picture of my baby boy (she thought it was my brother), when I saw him. I told her I had to leave, and I did. Just not that minute. But because of him- I kind of did have to leave. I couldn't have him see me. Why was he even there? So I ran off, but I was too late. He saw. He came running over and later this is what she said what happened.1

"Who was that??!!!" He asked harshly to the girl still holding the picture of the baby. "Who? That girl?" He sighed and enunciated, "No, that monkey..." The girl giggled and said, "She's in my English class. She moved here in the beginning of the year from New York and her name is Jilk. Is that all you want to know?" The guy looked puzzled and asked, "Are you sure it's not Jill?" The girl giggled again and went back to looking back at the picture. A lady called in the distance and the girl dropped the picture on the ground. He bent down and picked it up and then called after her. "Who is this??!!!" The girl answered with, " Her baby brother. You can have it if you want. I don't." And then she disappeared out of site.2

While that was happening, though, I was running to where I was supposed to meet my mom and my "baby brother". We were supposed to go to the hospital for a check-up, and if I was late, I probably would be in for it. I got there in plenty of time, but my mom was still a bit grouchy. She had been always a bit extra grouchy since we "had to move". "Come on, Jilk. If we don't hurry, we'll be late! Where were you, anyway?" I was about to answer when the baby started to cry.3

My momma tried to comfort him, but he wouldn't be comforted, so she handed him over to me. "Sush, little Jonny, sush!" I said in his ear. Unforunately, my mom heard. "I told you to never call him that! His name is Bill!!!" And then she took him back. He cried louder than ever, and hadn't stopped by the time we reached the hospital, so she heaved a great big sigh and said, "Just don't do it ever again, you hear? What if someone else hears you?" And I get Bill back. But he's still a Jonny to me.4

I wait outside to calm him down, and she goes inside to put our names down for the appointment. He's still crying, so I start singing. I may call him Jonny a couple of times. I don't really remember. Then I hear someone call my name. But it's not my name- I still turn around to the sound of it and it's him. Shoot. 5

"Jilk? Oh my god. You must be kidding me??!!!" He sounded angry. Oh, so angry. "Jonny. I-I mean...please, listen to me." He wouldn't listen. All he did was yell. "No, I'm not going to listen! I say I love you, and you basically say that you hate me and then you run off where I cannot find you, and when I do by accident your mother has had a baby and your name has changed? What the hell is wrong with you? I must have been wrong about you. I thought you were the kind of girl...no, you don't even need an explanation. I'll leave you hanging like you did me!"6

Oh god, I think. It's over. It's totally over. I had my chance, maybe I could have changed it. Maybe? But not now. Not now. He walks away and I have a quiet baby-like he knows his father is gone forever. I go inside and when the nurse asks me his name, I tell her the truth. "It's Bill. Only Bill..."

Oh my god that ending! I hope you write more on this soon. I really feel sorry for poor Jill the way her mom treats her like that. It makes me just want to slap some sense into that woman with the way she treats her daughter. I hope Jill eventually can tell Jonny what happened.
