The Mysterious Light - Chapter 4

CHAPTER FOUR - LOST SCARED1

When I woke up, I was still in the plane, but it felt like it wasn’t moving any more. What a relief. My first thought, once I got past my throbbing headache, was to check that Kate was okay. I called out her name a few times, but there was no answer.2

I still couldn’t see anything around me, so couldn’t tell whether she was there and asleep or unconscious. I slowly got up, and checked nearby chairs, but couldn’t find her. I was starting to get worried, so I got off the plane, and continued calling out her name but there was still no answer.3

I found the airport terminal, and called out again. “I’m over here!” I could hear a sweet voice shouting in the distance. She was alright. I felt so much better now. But I still had to find her. 4

After another few minutes of searching, I eventually found her, and walked up to her. I got to her and she slapped my face again. “Ouch… What was that for??”5

“You let go of me!” she snapped. “You promised you wouldn’t.” It sounded like she’d started crying. “I thought I was dying in that plane.”6

“I’m so sorry.” I explained that I’d been hit, and she just hit me again. I just accepted it this time, knowing I could easily get another if I kept questioning her.7

“Well I’m sick of this darkness. Let’s go and find this light bulb!”8

The two of us left the little café section of the airport, neither of us wondering what had happened to Frank. I hadn’t seen him since the before the flight and Kate said she hadn’t seen him since they landed, when he locked himself in the cockpit. We just assumed that he must be alright, and hoped that he’d be there when we got back.9

We walked out of the building, still in darkness, heading down what we suspected to be a main road. Although we really had no idea where we were. We didn’t even know if we’d made it to Brisbane, or if the pilot had to make an emergency stop. 10

Kate saw the one open store in the city across the road, and we went in. There was an old lady there, sitting behind a table. We introduced ourselves and then we asked for directions. We were given extremely accurate sounding directions to the post office, and were even offered a free coffee and piece of cake. We felt rather bad taking it from her, and felt that we should give her something, but we had nothing to give her.11

We thanked the old lady again, and left, quite satisfied by the treats she’d given us. We made our way down the road, hoping we were following the directions we were given correctly. There was really no way to tell though until we got there. If we ever got there.12

We walked for ages; it felt like we were walking around in circles. I’m certain that we passed the same intersection at least twice. Being as tired as I was didn’t really help. And Kate was getting tired as well. We thought it might be best if we found somewhere to sleep for a few hours. 13

“Great idea Shane, but where the hell are we going to be able to find to sleep?” Kate was getting very snappy now, and seemed to need sleep more than me.14

“I don’t know. Why don’t we just sleep on the street?” I had no better ideas, so this was as good as Kate would get.15

“What if it rains? What if we get attacked? Killed even?”16

“Well no where’s open. And we’re broke. We haven’t really got any other option.”17

Kate was starting to yell now. “I’m not going to sleep on the street okay!”18

“How about we sleep in a car then? If we can find one that’s unlocked. Then you’ll be safe from weather and criminals.”19

Kate just remained silent, and I walked down the street, trying to open the doors of all the cars on the road. I was about three blocks down the road when I finally found one. Luckily, it was a station-wagon, so there was plenty of room to sleep as well. But I’d lost Kate now.20

I went back to where we fought and called out her name, but there was no reply. “Kate?” Still nothing. “Where are you?” I still couldn’t hear anything from her though. “I’m sorry! Don’t hate me!” I heard footsteps on the other side of the road, so went over and saw her running away. 21

I chased after her, and eventually caught up and apologised numerous times again. She eventually agreed to sleep in the car, and I walked with her towards where it was parked. We got into the car, folded the back seats down for a larger sleeping area, and quickly fell asleep next to each other.22

I woke up, and could feel her lying in my arms. “Kate?” I whispered, seeing if she was awake. “Kate? Are you awake?” There was no reply, so I decided to let her sleep longer, and I went back to sleep again. That was one good thing about eternal darkness, it made it a lot easier to sleep during the day.23

I woke up again, a lot more suddenly this time. Someone was poking and pushing me. “Shane? Wake up Shane!” It sounded like Kate’s voice, but something didn’t quite sound right about it. She was whispering to me, but she sounded really stressed out and anxious at the same time. “Wake up now!” She started thumping me now. “We’re moving!”24

“I’m awake. What’s wrong?” My voice was still dreary from just woken up. 25

“The car is MOVING! You have to do something! I’m scared”

What an adventure these two have gotten themselves into! Makes me wonder what could have happened to Frank there. Walking down the streets in total darkness would scare me to. I would end up being like Kate lol. Poor things seem to get in one mess after another.
