He awoke to the warmth of the sun’s rays on his back and gently aroused himself from the snow he had previously burrowed deep within. His head popped out of the delicate angel snow to find that he was buried 2 feet in.1
“Ugh…” he groaned. With up most force he diverged himself from the snow and rid his coat of the spare ice. He stood there and plotted his course for the day on which route would be easier to take and of course the path less built up of ice.2
“O well…I have a good 5-6 hours to spare” he said less pleased at each glance of the mountain. He reared and took off at lightning speed as he dodged through the frosted forests and delicately step over iced rivers. He galloped high up onto the rigid mountain pathways. By time he reached the top he was able to overlook the vast, rolling grassland that settled beneath the mountain. He made a dash for the bottom, but being vigilant of the stones, logs, and much larger projectiles that shot up from underneath him. He came to a sudden stop. Before him was a ledge that had an incredibly steep drop that may have ranged between 45-50 feet. The quizzical look upon his face grew more with each evaluation of the drop. Suddenly he lurched forward and muddled his feet so he could land at least land without terrible damage. Well that didn’t exactly work out like he wanted it to. When he came to the landing his feet collapsed from impact and rolled down the rest of the path awkwardly.3
“Ow…that didn’t go according to what I had anticipated” he groaned. He got up and shook the loose dirt from his silky, black coat. His ears perked up and trotted towards the herd which appeared startled by his “graceful” descent. 4
“Leonador!” yelled a striking, chestnut stallion. He could recognize the goofy looking stallion galloping towards him only as Chino.5
“What did the landing gear malfunction when coming off that ledge? Really I thought it was quite stylish how you managed to spin yourself at the take off” Chino acknowledged sarcastically.6
“Are you trying to impress the mares? You’re so James Bond like!” he teased. Leonador just rolled his eyes.7
“What do you take me for Chino, an idiot such as yourself?” Leonador replied playfully.8
“Why how could you say such a thing about your own friend?” Chino whined jokingly.9
“Because I can” Leonador said in his fake, annoyed voice. The two stallions laughed.10
“It’s good to be home” declared Leonador.11
“Aye it is” Chino replied “Though I wouldn’t get too comfortable.”12
“Why is that?” Leonador cried in surprise thinking that it was meant as a joke. He looked at Chino’s sincere and sorrowful look. 13
“Because there is a disturbance.”14
“A Disturbance… What you mea-“Leonador was cut off. 15
“Two members of the herd were captured when off looking for food…we saw them through the woods while collecting food for the mares and young ones.” Chino replied bitterly. Leonador understood now.16
“We should prepare the rest of the heard for another journey…but now we rest I am tired and I think it would be wise for us to get our rest” he said clearly fatigued. The two horses solemnly walked down to the meadow where they joined their herd for a peaceful night.17
“I’ll watch over the heard for tonight…you just rest peacefully.” whispered Chino. Leonador looked at his friend in appreciation and nestled down under the Juniper tree. For once he was able to relax and enjoy the night breeze in peace. He stared up at the vast, star filled sky and slowly closed his eyes.18
