Physical description:
Well built but not bulked up; fit but not excessively so. He used to be quite skinny as a youth but filled out once he attended the Andorian War Academy. He's not a fitness freak but neither does he let himself go physically. He rarely exercises for the sake of exercising. He trains regularly, using the combat techniques he learnt at the Andorian War Academy, which helps keep him fit. 4

Personal history:
Malcolm was born in the city of Newcastle, on the east coast of Australia. His father - Stephen - ran a flight training school, teaching civilians to fly shuttles. Stephen has a fifth level pilot certificate and helped Malcolm attain his own high level fifth certificate. His mother - Samantha - was a Judge Advocate General officer. It was her that inspired him to become a command officer. 5

Malcolm graduated high school in the top two percent of the school. He immediately enrolled in Starfleet Academy and graduated in the top five percent of that year's class. He was offered a post on a starbase, but instead decided to enrol with the Andorian War Academy for further studies. Malcolm was taught all aspects of war: hand to hand combat; personal weapons, as well as ship weapons training; how to survive in a vast range of terrains and worlds; and perhaps most importantly, how to command effectively. Upon graduation, Malcolm felt he was well on the road to reaching his goal of commanding his own starship. 6

He was offered and accepted the position of Assistant Helm officer on the starship, U.S.S. Solomon, which he held for three years. He rose from the rank of Ensign to a full lieutenant in that time and earned the Preantares Ribbon of Excellence and a Purple Heart. While serving on the Solomon, he was offered a position aboard the U.S.S. Warspite, which he accepted. 7

He served this time as a full Helm officer and continued his rise through the ranks. He acquitted himself well on the Warspite, but it was some unexpected time travelling - due to a temporal anomaly - which piqued his interest in the idea of time travelling. Once they made it back to their own timeline, Malcolm studied as much information as was available on time travelling, going back to the times of Captain Kirk from the original and still-famous U.S.S. Enterprise. Warspite's First Officer left to command his own ship, and Malcolm - having passed various exams and tests - was promoted to take his place. During his stay, he earned a Citation for Conspicuous Bravery and a Purple Heart.8

After little more than a year of being the new First Officer, Malcolm was offered the position of First Officer of a new experimental ship, the U.S.S. Vengeance. The Vengeance was a warship, designed to secretly penetrate deep into enemy territory, execute its mission, and then sneak - or fight - its way out again, all done without Starfleet's "official" knowledge. It was on one such mission that saw the captain killed on an away mission to a hostile planet. Malcolm led the remaining away team on a fighting withdrawal back to the ship. He then took command and fought their way back home. Starfleet officially promoted him to the rank of captain of the Vengeance and awarded him the Kragite Order of Heroism and a Purple Heart. He had finally reached his goal. 9

Malcolm captained the Vengeance for a further two years before being approached one day by Starfleet Command. He was told of a new prototype temporal engine, which would enable a starship - in this case, the U.S.S. Helios - to time travel. Excited by the prospect, Malcolm immediately agreed.10

But on its very first time jump, it encountered a major problem, which left them stranded in time; each subsequent time jump sent them to a random place in space and time. After a while, his crew voluntarily decided to give Malcolm a field promotion to Fleet Captain. Eventually, it was learnt that a Q entity had deliberately sabotaged the Helios to see how they would cope. The Q Continuum finally found out and ordered Q to return them back home.11

On returning to their own time - with only days having passed since their departure in that timeline - they were hailed as heroes by everyone... except Starfleet and the Federation Department of Temporal Investigations. The FDTI's subsequent investigation found that Malcolm had deliberately altered several timelines, and broke a number of other FDTI rules and regulations regarding time travel. Malcolm's succinct argument that "you bunch of morons wouldn't know how to independently run your fingers up your own noses without a manual, a compass and a committee meeting to guide you step by step" fell on deaf ears. They were all set to jail him, before an intervention from a source unknown to Malcolm. Starfleet refused to reveal whom intervened, and the mysterious third party refused to reveal themselves to him. Instead of prison, he was demoted to the rank of ensign and reassigned to the deep space station Empok Nor to serve as their Operations officer. The drastic demotion in rank was bad enough, but the reassignment to a space station rather than a star ship was a serious blow. For someone that had grown used to facing entirely new and exciting dangers on an almost daily basis, the apparently staid life on board a space station sounded more like being reassigned to the pits of Hell.12

But perhaps the most serious blow to Malcolm was Starfleet's apparent decision to abandon the Helios Project entirely.13

Personality profile:
Malcolm can be a very stubborn person. But that's not to say he isn't open to new ideas and suggestions. One thing he learnt at the Andorian War Academy was that a good leader is one that is always open to new ideas and is wiling to listen to others' suggestions. But being leader also means the decision will - and should - ultimately be his to make... unless answering to a superior, of course. Having his leadership called into question is something Malcolm will never tolerate, although he is usually man enough to admit when he is wrong about something. Malcolm can be a good diplomate when the occasion arrises, but his patience has been known to be strained. 14

He is a believer of "active diplomacy", which means sometimes wading into an argument and metaphorically - sometimes literally - knocking their heads together until they see sense, or threatening to inflict great personal harm to them, their family and succeeding generations if they don't come to an agreement, and quickly. 15

Malcolm always expected the best from his crew and pushed them to their limits. But he never made anyone do something that he wouldn't do himself. 16

Personal relationships are something he's never been very successful with. He was in one serious long distance relationship for a couple of years, which ended with her breaking his heart. After that, he vowed never to get involved with another long distance relationship again. But against all his expectations, Malcolm did find love again, on the Helios, with a mysterious woman of Chinese heritage named Xanadu. But on their return to their own timeline, Xanadu vanished and he hasn't seen her since. Malcolm now tries to keep the feelings of loneliness restricted to the privacy of his own quarters. In recent times, Malcolm has become more and more a loner.17
