Opposites Attract Chapter 10

YES I know I was supposed to be watching Derek and Maddie. YES I promised Maddie I would help her out. YES I knew Freddy cared a lot more at looking at Derek than dancing with me. But it was wierd.1

I was looking at Freddy the whole time.2

His sandy blonde hair, his light brown eyes, showing comfort and scheming at the same time. He was as tall as me, so I could stare straight at him. This was NOT right. 3

My whole life I had known Derek, secretly, deep down, liked him. He was cute, funny, and my definition of smart...enough. But why did looking into Freddy's eyes give me a sense of comfort and soothingness? He wasn't really looking at me, but at times he would glance over into my eyes, which gave me a tickly feeling. Everytime he looked at me, he turned his lips up, in a cute, goofy smile. I would smile back, and I felt an instant connection. 4

After FN, Maddie's mom was picking us up so we could go over to her house for a sleepover. I get kind of nervous around Maddie's mom. She's, well, she's generally nice, in a way. But she has a short patience, and will beat Maddie up infront of me without caring. That's why we spend most of our time together at my house. 5

I watched the big red Chevy pull up to the curb quickly. 6

"Hurry Dem, or she'll start screaming." Maddie said, grabbing my arm and dragging me. I followed her mindlessly. We both hopped into the backseat.7

Maddie's mom's light blonde curls were piled on the top of her head. She was built on the heavier side, but was only about 30. She looked like a steriotyped woma plucked from a night club almost. She had on tight dark jeans and a plain old white t-shirt. When we got in, she was staring at us both. 8

"Your late." She snapped.9

"Mom, it just ended." Maddie said, staring out her window. I said nothing, afraid. 10

"What are you eating for dinner?" Maddie's mom asked, turning to the road. 11

"What ever we can find, which I doubt is anything. All I can find these days is beer and whine, plus that guys diet food, which smells like puke." Maddie retorted, sneering.12

Oh wait, did I mention Maddie's mom has a drinking problem? And she's dating some butthead named Jeremy. He's obsessed with healthy eating or something. 13

Maddie's mom grumbled a few swears and harshly turned the wheel into their road. 14

Both of us quickly got out of the car and ran inside. We pounded up to Maddie's room, which was big enough for both of us to fit in. It was decorated with flowers and numbers, what Maddie's mom thought was "appropriate".15

"Wait, Maddie, what are we going to eat?" I asked, nervouly. I was REALLY hungry, but it didn't sound like there was much to have. 16

"God Demi, I'm not an idiot. I wouldn't invite you over with nothing to eat." Maddie said, smiling. She headed over to her closet, which is really big due to the fact she is living in this huge house. 17

She pushed aside a row of spangly, tea-party oriented dresses to reveal a shoe box. She opened it up and inside, packed tightly, was a bag of chips, two large old-style bottles of coke, a bag of baby carrots (health freak alert!) some ranch dresssing, and bowls. 18

"YESS!" I shouted, "this is awesome!" I grabbed a bottle of coke and the chips to rip them open. Then we made a toast to a great FN. I pretended it was just because of her and Derek, but I knew it was because of more than that.
