My Place Chapter 10

As I stood there watching her I felt that feeling bubble inside of me. She was graceful and careful washing the horses. There was a smile plastered on her face as she laughed and talked with the horses. I was content with standing in the shadows and watching her. She seemed so happy. When she was done she let the horses go to the meadow.1

I walked up beside her and stood there. We watched the horses run together with their manes flowing in the breeze. We stood there in silence taking in the world around us. I could hear her take in a deep breath. She smelled the air that smelled like roses. Then I snapped out of the trance I was in and looked at her.2

“I like what you did with the horses. They look wonderful now,” I said softly.3

She slowly turned her head my way and said, “I had a lot of fun washing the horses. Thank you for letting me use your stables for washing them.”4

“No problem. I don’t use it anyway,” I reassured her5

“I’m hungry let’s go make supper,” she said as she headed toward the house.6

I ran to catch up with her as she walked quickly. Man, was she getting bossy. Also, she was acting like she lived here all her life. However, I couldn’t get mad at her for some reason. Maybe it had something to do with the funny feeling in my stomach. 7

We made a simple meal for supper. Catherine made chicken and broccoli. I made corn, biscuits, and a drink. The drink had berries and fruit in it and a little bit of rum. I had this once and loved it. Catherine was sure to love it. She sang as she cooked and I hummed along. She seemed so content here. We didn’t talk until we sat down to eat.8

“What do you like most about here?” I asked her casually.9

“Being with you…. I mean being able to do whatever I want,” She answered.10

“Yes, I like y… that too,” I caught myself before saying I liked her.11

“The flowers are beautiful here,” She replied.12

“There is something in the soil that makes them grow big and bright,” I informed her as I got up to get the drinks.13

“I would say that, plus the air. It is fresher here then where I came from,” She yelled after me.14

“I made a special drink for you,” I said as I returned with the drinks15

She picked it up and drank a sip. She sat there with this funny look on her face. She was trying to think of what she thought of it. Then she took another sip and smiled. She sat the cup down and her eyes got foggy. She looked like she was in a dream.16

“Do you like it?” I asked a little worried.17

“It was very good. There seems to be alcohol in it though,” she said with her voice floating.18

“There is. That is the secret recipe,” I told her.19

“I never had alcohol before,” she said softly.20

“Catherine are you all right?” I asked with concern.21

She was acting weird like she was in a dream. She didn’t seem to take in the things around her. Her eyes were glazed over and she was trembling slightly. She didn’t answer my question, just stared on. I yelled her name, but there was no answer. I picked her up and took her to her bedroom. I laid her on her bed and left.22

I went downstairs to clean up the kitchen and dinner room. I didn’t think that the drink would have such a strong effect on her. Once I cleaned everything up I went upstairs. I turned off all the lights and went to bed.23
