Opposties Attract Chapter 9

Friday Night came soon enough; well for Maddie at least. She was running around like a Mexican Jumping Bean at my house, trying to get ready.1

"Hey Maddie, could I get you some caffene or something? You don't seem to be hyper enough yet." I offered sarcastically. I was sitting on my bed with my cell phone, trying to get the stupid frog across the highway.2

"God Demi you're so annoying!" Maddie said seriously, as she brushed her straight hair and pulled it back with two clips. 3

"I should probably go get ready." I said to no one, brushing Maddie's comment away. 4

I looked in my dresser drawer and found no clothes of particular interest. I finally decided on a dark blue zipper hoodie with a blue shirt underneath, and plain old jeans.5

"How do I look?" I asked Maddie after putting the outfit on.6

"How do I look more importantly?" Maddie asked, amusingly. She had on a dark blue scoop neck shirt and light blue jeans. 7

"Great," I said, pulling my thick dark brown hair back in a loose ponytail, "my mom's waiting in the car, let's go."8

Outside of the FN building was only slightly insane. People were already standing in their regular cliques, the populars and jocks taking up as much room as they wanted, the nerds in the corner, and the middle level just looking for their friends. I was looking around for Derek along with Maddie, but what I found instead was an instant disaster. 9

"Hey, Demi, Maddie, how's it going?" Sophie came bounding up to us. Her blonde hair was in two high and bouncy ponytails. She was wearing a long black skirt and a blouse.10

"Who the hell dressed her?" I murmured to Maddie. Sophie didn't seem to notice. 11

"Well gals I would really love to stay here and chat, but I need to go find Derek. See you Dem!" Maddie patted us both on the shoulder and ran away quickly into the crowd. I suttly gave Maddie the finger as Sophie burst into chatter. 12

"Oh my gosh Demi, we're going to have SO much fun tonight. Just you and me, for 1 and a half hours together! How exciting!"13

"Yeah..sure..." I said, trying to smile. This would be the worst night of my life. Finally they opened up the doors, and we all went bursting through. 14

The greatest thing about there being practically the whole grade there is that it's extremly easy to hide, ESPECIALLY on the dance floor, which is where I sprinted to. I busted through mobs of people dancing, and ended up on the complete other side. 15

"Freddy?" I saw somebody sitting against the wall, concentrating on their cell phone.16

"Hey Dem." he didn't even look up.17

"What are you doing?" I asked, scrunching down next to him.18

"Texting Derek, he's looking for Maddie."19

"Interesting." I said glancing up at the chaperone's lining the walls. They seemed really bored.20

"I'm going to head over to air hockey soon, want to come?" Freddy asked, finally looking over at me. 21

"Yeah, sure, why not?" I nodded, putting my hand on his shoulder and hoisting myself up.22

The next hour went by completely uneventfully, except for the fact I had to dodge Sophie at all cost. She seemed to have found somebody else to annoy, so I wasn't to concerned. Freddy and I played air hockey, and he beat me of course, 10-6. I hadn't seen Maddie or Derek the whole time, but I knew they were there. Freddy and I headed back to the dance floor after our game. We danced for a few seconds then went over to the wall again. 23

FN lasted until 9, and it was 8:30 when we saw Derek and Maddie again. They came over to us; Derek sat down next to Freddy and Maddie next to me. 24

"What have you been doing?" I asked Maddie.25

"We danced a little bit, but then went over the the chairs and talked for a long time." Maddie smiled.26

"About WHAT?" I asked, not knowing Derek could have such a long attention span. 27

"Oh, you know..." She didn't finish. 28

"Maddie, come on." I said, annoyed.30

"Fine, ok, it was just about-"31

Suddenly she was interrupted by the DJ. "Hey folks, I'm going to slow this down a bit, so relax well I put on a nice slow song." Maddie locked into panic mode. 32

"Demi, oh my god, what if he asks me to dance. Oh no, this is bad."33

I just leaned back and smiled, "my god Maddie, you want to dance with him, you WANT him to ask you." She didn't reply.34

A few moments later, what a shock, Derek showed up. "Maddie, want to dance with me?" He looked straight into her eyes with his soft brown ones.35

She held up her hand and he pulled her up, then they went to the dance floor. They dissapeared into the crowd.36

"Crap Derek! I want to see you!" Freddy said, bouncing up. I followed him, and we approached the floor. 37

Then the popular mob attacked.38

"What do you think you're doing?" A girl with perfect strawberry hair asked. 39

"Nothing." Freddy asked, staring her back straight in the eyes. 40

"Couples only." She retorted. 41

Freddy, without a hesitation, turned to me. "C'mon Dem, we're dancing." He grabbed my hand before I realized what was going on. He dragged me into the center of the floor, where we had a clear view of the two of them. 42

Freddy was too focused on them, watching every step. I looked at them for a second, both staring into each others eyes. 43
