The Apprition Man - Part Forty- six #

Chapter Twelve - Part Forty-six #1

+++ Doctor Harvey's P.O.V +++2

"Oh my lord, Connor, where have you been?" Amanda screeched, not so pleasantly at him as he took a seat next to his fiance.3

Burying his head in his hand, he crumpled into a heap, feeling the day starting to wear thin on his stress levels.4

"What's it look like to you Amanda?" he asked, slightly frustrated with her tone of voice.5

That was Amanda though. She always had to be the center of attention.6

He could tell he had offended her, but he did not care one bit. He just wanted to be back in that room with Christopher.7

"Well there is no need to get all huffy. I was only asking you a question. I mean you're desk woman, whatever her name is God forbid her, told me you were at the hospital and that there had been an accident, how do you expect me to react Connor?"8

Lifting his head from his hands, he turned away from Amanda to look at his son sitting there reading his Lord Of The Rings book.9

He was a good kind, a quiet person, a calm person, unlike his Mother.10

"So what happened?" she asked, sounding again like someone had just crapped under her nose.11

It was going right through him, like a sharp knife and he wished she had a zip for a mouth or a mute button. Something to just shut her up or tone her down completely.12

"I mean there was an accident, right?"13

Nodding his head in fear he sat back in his seat.14

There was going to be no easy way to tell her about Christopher, hell he wished he never had to tell her, but he owed it to Christopher to give him the life he never really had and to take responsibility for his past actions.15

Taking a small breath, he took Amanda's hand, looking into her eyes hoping to soothe her emotions a little.16

"Yes, there was an accident" he managed to choke back. The next few words begging not to be said, running through his mind, causing his eye to twitch.17

"My...Mother...she died."18

Letting go of his hand, Amanda sat back, her hand across her mouth as if she was about to be sick. Her stomach lurched. She had only met Jean once in all the years that they had been together, but she knew how much love and respect Connor had for his mother and how this would just about kill him.19

Not knowing what exactly to say she choked back a few tears and remained silent, watching the light flicker in his teary eyes.20

"Was there anyone else in the car Dad?" Oliver asked, placing his book underneath the seat. His eyes somewhat full of anger, or was that just Harvey's imagination.21

Confused, Harvey rested his hands on Oliver's knee.22

Could it be that Oliver had heard about the accident already? No, it was not possible, it was crazy talk. It was just not possible. Though in the back of his mind Harvey could never be to sure.23

The only thing that mattered right now was saving his son's life, nothing else, this family would just have to wait.24

He sat silently for a few moments, watching Oliver, wondering whether or not he could doge the question for a while, have some silence, some peace; but he was like his father. Oliver wanted answers right away and was angry when he didn't know them and so desperate to find out.25

Steadily as the words came together in his head, he nodded patting Oliver's knee.26

"There was another passenger in the car, who I am here for right now. He is unconscious, but in a stable condition, though they say he could fall into a coma if worse was to happen."27

Gasping, she stood up, pacing back and forth.28

It sparked Harvey's short fuse as his blood boiled up almost automatically.29

He grabbed her arm, pulling her closer, anger firring in his eyes.30

"Sit down, and stop acting like such a freaking drama queen. It was my mother and my son in that car. I don't know why you even bother pretending to care."31

That was it. The words were out in the open now. It was not like he planned for them to come out sounding so harsh and cold, but they had and he could not take them back, nor did he regret it. He just hated it when Amanda worked herself up into an all about me attitude, like she was the only one on the earth and all eyes just had to be on Amanda. It reminded him so much of Lenna.32

"Your son? Oliver is you're son. What are you talking about?" Amanda cried, causing an old couple to turn around and glare.33

Looking at them angrily, she impolitely stuck up her finger.34

"Sod off home and mind your own business you old wind bags."35

"AMANDA," Harvey yelled angrily, "Sit down, shut up and listen."36

Staring at him with dagger sharp eyes and disgust, she picked up her handbag, slugging it over her shoulder. Pure bitterness seeping right through her body.37

"How dare you! How dare you tell me to shut up you filthy, cheating bastard."38

Looking at Oliver she walked over to her chair, waiting.39

Oliver looked at Amanda. The anger Harvey thought he saw was long gone and was replaced with a compassionate smile.40

"Well don't just sit there love. We're getting out of here."41

Oliver shook his head, wrapping his arms around Harvey's shoulder.42

"I want to stay here with Dad. He needs someone to support him."43

Harvey could not help but feel his heart warm to his son's reaction to his Mother's outburst.44

Shocked, she turned around walking towards the door. When she had finally got there, she turned back to Oliver with an not so innocent expression on her face. Harvey knew what was coming.45

"Alright, Oliver, I am going to make this simple. You have two options: you can stay here with this waste of space you call your Father and make your own way home , or you can come home with me and we will go get and ice cream and rent a movie. What will it be?"46

Bribery, she was like her father, any thing she could control she had to bribe her way into it.47

Shrugging his shoulders as if not needing to weigh down his options he smiled and patted his father's back.48

"I think I will be making my own way home tonight."49

Nodding her head slowly she turned around quickly and walked through the doors, letting them boom closed behind her.50

Harvey looked at Oliver, admiring his sprite.51

"Thank you Oliver, it means a lot to me."52

Oliver smiled, wrapping another arm around his shoulders.53

"No problem Dad, what are good sons for?"

Your development of characters even in this chapter alone is fantastic. The way that they reacted was generally very realistic.
    Great job!

I found it really interesting the way Christopher and his father both share anger problems. I wonder if Conner actually passed the anger problems down genetically.

That Amands was quite a character too, I really don't like her at all. She doesn't really seem to care about her husband at all, and i hate the way she just jumped to conclusions about him cheating. On the other hand Dr. Harvery was pretty short with her and she must have been really confused. Still, I don't like her.

It's funny, but even though I disliked Dr. Harvey at the begining of the story, I'm really starting to think he's a nice guy now. he obviously really cares for Chris.

The one part of the story that you may want to make more clear is the age of Oliver. At first he thought he was youngeer, but then i started to think maybe he was a teenager soon. I'm still not quite sure how old he is.
Other then that i thought that this was a great scene and I'm heading off to read the next part.

    Keep on truckin'

It is shaping up nicely and the support of the son [out of nowhere] can only help to strengthen the characters. Of course the kid could be faking to get the goods on this other son...hmm? [rotten little brat!]
Few typos but otherwise very good. the various chapters are also flowing together nicely and the reader has an easy transition.

    beginning: 5, language: 5, plot: 5, ending: 5, dialog: 5, characters: 5.
