Opposites Attract Chapter 8

Maddie and I stayed up until 11:30 watching that dumb soap opera. It was called Leave it to Johnny. It was sad how we were watching it. We got so into it, when Johnny had to leave Sally for Anne, Maddie started crying, and I started screaming at the TV.1

"JOHNNY YOU IDIOT! Anne's cheating on you! See, she's stealing your money! She likes Michael! See!" We watched the whole season, all 9 episodes. 2

Finnally, as we were going to bed, and Maddie finished up the last of the Tropicana Twister, I suddenly remembered about Derek. 3

"Oh yeah Maddie, Derek wanted to talk to you. He called."4

"When was that?" She asked, opening her sleeping bag. 5

"I dunno, like before we started watching." 6

"That's lovely!" she said, throwing her hands in the air, "I wonder what he wanted."7

"Talk to him before you go to school tommorow." I mumbled, rolling over. 8

"Thanks Dem, I can always count on you for phone messages."9

"No problem." I smiled in my half sleep.10

The next morning, I woke up and spun around. Maddie wasn't in her sleeping bag, but I heard the water running next door in the bathroom. Yes we have a bathroom in our basement. 11

She emerged from the bathroom a minute later. She was dressed and was brushing her teeth. Her hair was wrapped in a turquoise towel, which went really well with her blue eyes and blue eyeliner that she had put on. 12

"Good thing you got up sleepy head. It's 6:50, you have...half an hour 'til the bus."13

"Crap, I have to take a shower too. Did you leave me hot water?" I slowly emerged out of my warm cocoon. 14

"Maybe." Maddie smiled, and dissapeared back into the bathroom. 15

"Maddie!" I called as I grabbed my clothes from near the TV, "call Derek!"16

"Shoot, I almost forgot!" Maddie said, running back out, ripping off her towel and fishing for her phone. I went into the bathroom which was still steamy and turned on the water. After a few minutes, the water still wasn't very warm. I quickly stepped in just to get it over with. It was very unpleasent. After I got dressed in my tight jeans and layered green polo top with a dark crimson shirt underneath, I came back out. 17

"What did he say?" I asked eagerly, ripping a brush through my hair and putting on a red headband. 18

"Oh my god Demi, I can't tell if those are bags or black eyes. Go take this cover up and fix that before I tell you."19

"God Maddie I hate you!" I said, trudging back into the bathroom. I applied the slobbery creme, and I will admit I looked better, but I was annoyed at Maddie now.20

"Okay, what?" I said, throwing the creme back in Maddie's bag which she was packing. 21

"Okay, don't laugh at me, but.." Maddie turned red, "he asked me out to FN."22

"He DID? Woah Maddie, that's big." I said, raising my eyebrows. 23

FN stood for Friday Night. Every Friday night, a local business hired a DJ, set out some refreshments, brought in a few Arcade Games, a few pool tables and an air hockey table. It was basically a huge club where we could just hang out on Friday Night. 24

"I said yes." Maddie blushed again. 25

"Okay, that's..that's..." I couldn't even come up with the right word, "it's good."26

"Dem," Maddie said, looking up at me, "I need you to come too. You know Derek way better than I do, so please help me. I want this to work out." 27

"Okay, I'll do it." I said, going back to the bathroom to brush my teeth and put the brush away. I didn't mention to Maddie that I was planning on going to FN even if she asked me if I wanted to or not. I really wanted to see how this was going to work. 28

Out at the bus stop, at the end of the road, it was so funny. Freddy had figured out about Derek asking Maddie to FN, and was having fun with it. At our bus stop, there was usually just me, all 3 boys and an 8th grader. But all the 8th grader did was text or listen to his iPod. 29

"So, who's going to FN?" Freddy asked. Maddie, Derek and I raised our hands. 30

"Who's planning on dancing with someone there?" Derek and Maddie both blushed, and neither raised their hands. 31

"Fred, cut it out." Kevin said sternly. He never got to go to FN because his mom made him play the violin and take lessons Friday Nights. I think she did it on purpose. 32

Finally the bus arrived. Maddie and I don't normally take the same bus, but she comes over to my house a lot, so it's not a big deal when she's on my bus. We took a seat in the middle, and Freddy and Derek arrived right next to us. They were talking in hushed tones the whole way, looking at me or Maddie occasionally. It was annoying since I was on the aisle, but I talked to Maddie to try and ignore them. 33

When we got to school, Freddy, Derek, and Kevin ran ahead, but Maddie and I lagged behind. Suddenly a girl named Sophie came running up to us. Sophie is really annoying. She has blonde hair that goes down to the middle of her back. It's always tangled and looked like she never brushes it. She has these really wide rimmed glasses that look like they're from the mid 1900's. She is constantly asking questions and never seems to shut up.34

"Hey guys, what's up?" before either of us could answer, she jumped straight to the statement, "hey Maddie, I heard you and Derek are going out, and he asked you to FN. Well I need to go. I wish a guy would ask me there." She ran off, with her Hollister shoulder bag bumping her skinny hip. 35

"How the heck did she know Derek and I were-"36

"Maddie, just keep walking."
