Snow Falls For A Reason

“Count to twenty then follow me outside,” she whispers to me. My eyes follow her body walking out the door to the dumpster. Not even counting I get up as the door slams shut. I tell my mom I’ll be right back I need to go outside. I kiss my baby boy on the forehead and head outside. I see her throw the trash in the dumpster and go around in the corner. As I walk up to her, she’s lighting up her cigarette and sitting down on what seems to be a broken chair. 1

“Man, its cold out here. How do you stand it?” I shiver and hold myself tighter. She just looks up and smiles at first. I smile back nervously. I move closer to her, “Yeah don’t forget not to blow it on me this time. Mom will think I’ve been smoking again.” We both giggle and she tells me to sit on her lap. “Nope,” I say shaking my head. “I don’t sit on anyone’s lap remember?” I smile at her.2

“Then sit down on the cardboard thingy. I get nervous with you standing.” She keeps smiling at me like I’m something incredible. Shook my head no because I like standing, especially when it’s cold. We start talking about random things. Barely talk in one day and today I’ve finally got her in front of me. I’m so nervous around her I begin to shiver more.3

“God, it’s so cold,” I chatter out as she moves to the bench. She tells me to sit down beside her and I finally do. The next few moments were like time somewhat stopped or even slowed down. Her arm was wrapped about me and I cuddled into her. We sat there huddled together in the cold weather while she smoked her cigarette. I closed my eyes and when I opened them snow was falling. Smiling at the sight, I didn’t want to leave. I knew she could feel it too because neither one of us moved. 4

I think I was the first to make the move. My lips were touching hers. Her arm was still around me and I was kissing her. When we both finally realized what was going on, I pulled away embarrassed. I whisper that I was sorry. “Don’t be sorry,” she whispers then kisses me back, but so much deeper with more passion. Our tongues glide along one another as I crave more and more of her. She runs her hand through my hair as I move my hand to the back of her neck. I was no longer cold. The heat between kept both of us warm for the remainder of our kiss.5

Finally settling down next to her, my head rests on her shoulder. “I love you Kalli,” I couldn’t say more because I’ve never told her before. She doesn’t reply so I think I made a mistake. Either that or she didn’t hear me. I get worried that all of this was a big mistake. She smoothes my hair and I can feel that she’s smiling.6

“I love you too, Shay.” The snow is still falling to the ground and making this beautiful scenery. “I know you want us to be together again, but you know I can’t. I’m with him and I live miles away from you.” I wanted to cry, but I never shed a tear. I was with her this minute and that’s all that mattered. “Hey, look at me,” she titles my chin up and I look deep into her eyes. “I do love you, Shay, more than you know. But you know it wouldn’t be fair to anyone.” I nod and just cuddle into her. She removes her arm from around me and says, “Hey, well I better get back to work. They might’ve thought I died.” She laughed that beautiful laugh as we both stood up. 7

Just a couple steps behind her, I look down and she her hand reaching for mine. I take her hand and smile. Nothing around matters. There are people coming out of their cars giving us a look and just smile. “You know my grandma doesn’t approve of this,” she tells me she knows. We finally reach right before the door and she slowly lets go of my hand. It was as if she didn’t even want to let go. I open the door for her and let her walk in before me. 8

Kalli’s in front of me now but I grab her hand and twirl into me. My hand runs through her hair and around her neck. Our lips meet and our kiss deepens. No matter who is around I’m in love with Kalli and I’m showing it. She wraps her arms around my waist and pulls me into her. Our bodies touch and the kiss stays strong. 9

After pulling away from those lips, I rest my forehead against hers. The world around me is a blur. I can see in the corner of my eyes my mother smiling, my baby boy getting into things he shouldn’t have, and my grandmother’s jaw dropping. Reality finally comes into play as her boss comes from around the counter and screams at her. We’re smiling at each other and not moving.10

I take her hand and we walk over to our table. Grabbing my baby I give him kisses and let my mom out of the booth. She is still smiling at me and Kalli. My grandmother is freaking out and screaming things at me which I don’t agree. All of us walk out of the restaurant, without my grandma, and head to the car. Kalli sits in the back, and we drive her back to our house. 11

“Hey Shay, since I got fired, think I could stay with you for a few hours?” I smile in and she sees in the mirror. Ideas are swarming through my head. Kalli doesn’t know what happens when you stay with me. 12

“Oh, Shay, I have to go back to work so you guys be good okay?” I smile and nod. What will we do alone in the house for a few hours? Kalli is mine for the next few hours. I turn around and lip to her, “I love you.” The drive home is painful, because I can’t wait to show Kalli how much I love her.13
