I lit a cigarette. I don't even enjoy smoking that much, but sometimes the situation dictates it. This was one of those situations.
Women, I thought as I shook my head and started the engine. It gave a satisfying roar. I put the car in reverse and backed out of the driveway. It was late and there was nobody else on the road. I turned the volume up on the radio and put the accelerator to the floor. Stuff flashed by the window. The bass drummed. I can't remember which song it was. It doesn't matter.
Somewhere along the way I discovered the cigarette was no longer in my hand. All I could do was hope I had either thrown it out the window or put it out properly. Screw it.
Before I knew it I was home. I parked my car somewhere in the vicinity of the parking lot and made my way to my building.
“We need a fucking elevator,” I said as I went up to the top floor.
The lights were off. Probably because I had turned them off on my way out. I turned them on. Everything was the same. My apartment was still filled with random crap. There were still stacks of books on tables and there was still dust on the television. The drapes were still black. For some reason it felt as if things should have been different. Things being the same was in the past. I wasn't in the past any more. Things had happened and the future had caught me with my pants down. Figuratively speaking, of course. Just to ease my mind I threw a plant out the window. Then I went to bed. There was nobody there waiting for me. I dreamt about a girl with dark hair. 1
The alarm clock blared at me. With sudden bravado I tried to smash it but I only succeeded in hurting my hand on the wooden bedside table.
“I'll get you tomorrow morning,” I told the infernal thing. It kept blaring. I pressed a button. It stopped.
I shambled out of the bedroom into my living room. Getting rid of the plant had been a good idea. The room was spacious and after I pushed aside the drapes it was filled with pleasant sunlight.
I realized I already felt better. There were eggs in the fridge and through some arcane form of magic involving fire and a pan, they turned into breakfast. A quick shower washed away the last of my grogginess.
I sat down in my thinking chair.
Okay, recap. I should not have gone out with her sister. But then again, if I had never dated her sister, I would never have met her in the first place. The situation sucked, yes, but that was a fact. That was just the way it was. We had to go forward from there. Only she didn't want to. It would be too hard on her sister. That was a good point, since the sister still had a crush on me. I couldn't just kill the sister, of course. I shook my head. Maybe I just had to admit to another defeat. There was no going back to the sister either. Not now, not after the things I said to her.
Oh well. I had extricated myself pretty graciously. Perhaps I should just leave it at that.
I looked at the clock. Shit. It probably did go faster if I wasn't looking. I pulled on some clothes and only spent a minimal amount of time in front of the mirror. 2

MILTON!!! I won't applaude even if I like where this is going (I'll tell you where, after this) because I want YOU to continue it
You put an image in my mind and I adore it (I just hope you're open to suggestions)
Have his dream come to life.
Like.. her falling on him, like some fallen angel?
Or maybe while driving and smoking, he could almost run over that girl from his dreams?
Haha, see, Milton (not your real name), you HAVE made me think..
Please go on?
*applaudes because you deserve it*
