Truth or Dare (Ch. 4: The Plan)

“Hi, Mom,” I started nervously.1

“Brie, we need to talk,” she said. Her voice was different than in my dream, she was more nervous than angry.2

“Okay, Mom. What about?” I asked, following her into the sitting room.3

“Sit down, Brie,” she ordered kindly.4

I got nervous as I sat on the brown leather sofa. “What’s up, Mom?” I questioned curiously.5

“Your father called,” she began. Her blue eyes drilled into my golden ones. I cringed, it was the same words that started the lecture in my dream. My hands began to shake slightly. “He requests that,” she paused, obviously nervous for my reaction to what she was about to say, “you stay with him for a couple of weeks while Cameron and I are in New York.”6

“What?” I gasped, shocked that I wasn’t in trouble and angry that I wasn’t trusted enough to be home alone for two weeks. For crying out loud I’m a junior in high school, I’m 17 years old, and I’ve never given any reason for them not to trust me. “Why?”7

“Brie, he doesn’t think you can handle being here alone for so long at your age,” she tried to explain. Her annoyance at my father was slightly heard in her words, but she also sounded like she agreed.8

“What does he think I’m going to do? I don’t do bad things, Mom. I don’t drink, I don’t do drugs, and it’s not like I’m going to sneak boys over and show them a good time. What is he thinking I’ll do?” I was mad.9

“Calm down, Brie,” Mom said when I started to yell and my shaking became more obvious. “Will you just consider it?”10

“No!” I shouted. “Why should I, Mom? I can’t stand staying at his house for a night, let alone two weeks!”11

“Brie, please. It might be good for you to spend some time with Lauren and Sarah.”12

“You have got to be kidding me,” I objected. “They’re horrible! Talk about evil step mother and bratty step sister. Come on, Mom.”13

“It would do you some good to stay with them. Then you and Lauren could at least try to get along.” My mother was obviously on their side now.14

“Are you serious, Mom? This is so unfair!”15

“Brie, it’s just for two weeks. You will survive, I promise,” she reasoned showing me that I could argue all I want, but her decision was set. I had no choice in this.16

“Fine,” I spat. “But I’m not going to be stuck in that house. I will spend as much time away as I can.”17

“Okay,” my mom agreed, obviously happy that she got me to agree to not staying home alone.18

“Anything else?” I asked. “Or can I go get ready?”19

“Get ready for what?” With the conversation about my dad’s house, I forgot to tell my mother about going over to Jayden’s tonight.20

“I’m going out with a friend tonight, Mom. It’s going to be Jayden and I. I’m going over to his house, and he’s going to play the drums for me.”21

The look on her face was uncertain, but you could tell that she didn’t want to argue anymore. “Okay,” she sighed, hoping that she could trust me. “Be back by ten, okay?”22

I nodded, glad that she didn’t argue it. There was only so much time left for me to get ready. When I got upstairs, I rummaged through my closet for something subtle, but still cute, to wear with Jayden.23

After spending time in my closet looking, I settled on a pair of jeans, black ballet flats, a black sweater with a long sleeve green collared shirt under it, and a white belt. It was subtle enough that it wouldn’t look like I was trying too hard to impress Jayden. Once my chest length hair was brushed up into a ponytail, I grabbed my keys and started to leave my room.24

Just as I stepped into the hallway, my phone started to vibrate in my pocket alerting me that I was getting a phone call. I looked at the screen and didn’t think the number looked familiar.25

“Hello?” I answered uncertain.26

“Brie?” the voice on the other end made my heart stop. It was Jayden. How did he get my number?27

“Yes?”28

“This is Jayden,” he explained taking my uneasiness to mean that I didn’t know who it was.29

“Hi, um…” I started, “how did you get my number?”30

Jayden chuckled on the other line. “Your friend, Lauren, was giving it to another guy in the hall after chemistry, and I eavesdropped.”31

“Lauren? As in preppy blond from Algebra, Lauren?” I got instantly angry. Who did she think she was giving my number out to people without my permission.32

“Yah,” he answered nervously. “What’s wrong?”33

“Lauren is my step sister,” I explained. “Her and I do not get along, at all.”34

“Oh, then I wont tell you what she said at lunch right now, I want to see your reaction to that personally.” His voice sounded mischievous, and it made me nervous. 35

“Oh, that slightly scares me,” I admitted,36

“Don’t be scared, I thought it was rather cute.” Jayden’s voice never failed to leave me breathless. “But, now I do have one thing I must say,” he continued, “but you have to promise not to get angry with me.”37

“I promise,” I told him hoping that I wouldn’t regret my words. “What is it?”38

“I kind of followed you home today to get your address, and I’m parked outside right now to pick you up, are you ready?”39

“Really? Yah, I’ll be right down.” I was shocked that I didn’t notice someone following me on my five minute drive home, but I was not mad at him at all.40

“Okay, I’ll be waiting.” His voice was so sweet, so seductive.41

I put my phone and keys in my small black purse and headed down the stairs and out the door. My jaw dropped, and my heart beat accelerated when I saw him by the same car from my dreams, a black 996 Turbo Cabriolet Porsche.42

Jayden smoothly opened my door for me, and his expression changed when he saw my reaction to the car. “Is everything okay?”43

“Yes, nice car.”44

“You seem, more that just impressed. Sure nothing is wrong?” he quizzed.45

“I’ll explain later, you’ll think I’m nuts. I can’t explain it now, but don’t worry, I will soon enough,” I ensured.46

I got into the car, and we drove the few minutes to his house. Pulling into the driveway, I breathed a sigh of relief. This house was different than the house in my dreams. “I like your house,” I stated.47

“Oh, this isn’t my house. I just had to drop something off to my Uncle Jack on our way to my place. I live another block away,” he explained lightheartedly.48

“Oh, okay.” Maybe the house would be the same after all, but maybe not.49

He got back in the car after putting a box on the steps. “Sorry, had to drop of the cookies my mother made him. Ready to go?”50

“Of course,” I stated.51

We pulled up at his house, and my heart just stopped beating. Not only because the house was the same as the dream, I was getting used to that, but because I recognized the red corvette parked in the driveway. 52
