Pigmy - Part 1

Driving to the Walsh's house, on a Friday night, Amy (who was sixteen) hummed to the tune of the song playing on the radio.  The song was Vertigo by U2.  Tina was off key.  She didn't care, though, because she was going to go babysit the sweetest, most obedient child throughout all of her babysitting career.  The child's name was Kate and she was five.  On top of that, Mr. Tom Walsh and Mrs. Jane Walsh paid Amy five dollars an hour.  And the best part of it all was that the Walshs would be gone for at lest seven hours.1

Amy thought that the Mr. and Mrs. would be staying out all night because Mr. Walsh had just gotten back from a ten month arceolistic trip to Africa.  That was what Mr. Walsh did, he made trips to different parts of the world to study different types of civilizations.  And since this particular trip had requested that he leave for ten whole months in Africa, Mr. and Mrs. Walsh hadn't had each others company throughout that entire time frame.  What Amy thought and hoped would happen would be that they would go rent a hotel room some where and really enjoy each others company to make up for the missing ten months.2

Amy giggled at this thought.  Amy was also what some would call beautiful.  She was thin, but not anerexic skinny.  She had dirty blonde hair, bright green eyes, and smooth, flawless skin.  On top of that, she was also what some guys called a total Babe.  A "total Babe" consisted of a young virgin girl with the brains of a decent student and the body of any PlayBoy magazine.  By that, they meant, she had large breasts, long blonde hair, long legs, and a large ghetto butt.  To other guys, she was referred to as the white J. Lo.3

As Amy entered the subdivision, she noticed that the hairs on the back of her neck had stood up.  And not only there, but her arms were being covered with goose flesh.  She remembered the old saying from first grade that whenever you broke out in goose flesh that, it meant that a goose had walked over the spot where you were destined to die.  Amy shivered, tossed the thought aside, and turned the radio up louder.4

At that exact moment, a goose walked across the middle of a small, old, unnoticed road six miles to the north of where Amy's car had entered the subdivision, humbly entitled Dogwood Park.5

Pulling into the driveway of the large home of Mr. and Mrs. Walsh, Amy tried to focus on what she would do to entertain Kate.  She figured that they could play a game of something or other and then watch a bit of T.V. before she read Kate a story and send her to bed.  Then the rest of the night was for her to enjoy.  Amy highly doubted that Kate would cause her much trouble.6

"Hello, Amy!  How are you this evening?" Was how Amy was greeted upon knocking on the door.  This was said by Mrs. Walsh.7

"I'm doing fine, thank you.  How have you been?"8

"As well as I could manage.  I've been so anxious to finally know that Tom will be home with me.  For awhile anyway." Mrs. Walsh flashed a smile at the end to go with the last comment.Amy smiled back and headed towards the kitchen after Mr. Walsh called her in.9

"Hello, Amy.  We're really are glad that you could babysit for us.  Listen, I know it probably isn't good for me to share this with you, but 'The Mrs.' and I will be staying all night tonight.  So if it's alright with you, I was wondering if you would stay with Kate all night."10

"No problem Mr. Walsh.  I can totally stay for as long as you two need me."11

"That's great.  Thank you so very much.  Let's see, it is now, five O'clock, we will be dining until about seven-thirty, then we will go to the movies, watch a movie, and go check-in at at a hotel.  I think that by seven-thirty, I will turn off my cell phone so as not to disturb the other viewers and keep it off so as not to disturb my wife and myself."  Mr. Walsh smiled faintly at that thought. "So, after seven-thirty, you won't be able to contact us.  Is that alright?"12

"Of course it is.  I have done this before, I think I know how to handle Kate." Amy smiled at her own statement.  Mr. Walsh joined her.13

As Mr. and Mrs. Walsh pulled out of the driveway and drove away, Kate look up at Amy and asked, "Can we make cookies?"14

Amy smiled and said that she would see.15

Kate asked if they could watch T.V.16

Amy asked if Kate had any homework.17

Kate sighed and said that she supposed so.  Amy said that they should go into the kitchen and work on their homework together.  Kaye brightened at this and quickly accepted.18

In the kitchen, Kate boosted that she only had a little bit of coloring to do for homework.19

"Well, I have quite a bit, so I would really like it if you could be quite for a little while so that I can get some of it done." Said Amy.  She pulled out her chemistry and decided to get that out of the way before the other subjects.20

The two girls finished at the same time.  Kate had colored the best green cat in the entire world, according to Amy.  Kate said that she didn't understand all of the words and letters and numbers that were used in Amy's homework.  Amy laughed and said that Kate was lucky for now.21

At this point, the first of many sounds came from upstairs.  It came from directly above them, which was the master bed room.  It was like a thud, as though a baby had been dropped and hit the floor.  Amy looked up and asked Kate if she had heard that.22

"Yea.  I think something fell."23

"Okay, well I'm going to go find out what it was.  Is it okay if you stay here while I go upstairs to see what it was?"24

"Okay...but don't by gone too long, okay?"25

"Alright, I promise."26

Amy, walking up the stairs, realized that it was dark.  She also realized that maybe, if she turned on the lights, she would be able to see.  She found this to be humorous and flicked on the light switch.  As Amy reached the top of the stairs, she walked to the master bed room and flicked the light switch to that room on as well.  She noticed nothing out of the ordinary.  The only thing that was different was that Mr.Walsh's bags were still unpacked and in the middle of the room.  But that was not all that seemed out of place in the room either.  Amy saw a statue.  It was not a particularly big statue.  It was just there.  It stood about half of a foot tall.  It was not quite thin, nor was it rather fat either.  It had been sculpted in such a way that it was proportional to itself.27

"Oh, that's sooooooooooo cute." Said Amy.  Yet, While she was saying this, she received the oddest sensation.  No matter what, she could not shake the feeling that it was looking at her.  It was almost as if the thing's eyes were fixed upon her and followed her.  She knew that that was ridiculous, but still, the feeling remained.28

Well, she thought, it must have something to do with the look of this thing.  And so she believed it for the statue was dressed oddly.  It was holding a spear in one hand, a deep blood red feather sticking out of its hair to the left, and a bright golden colored band wrapped around his right arm.  It wore no shirt and it had a type of grass skirt on.  It didn't look much like a female skirt, it looked very masculine.29

It gave Amy the creeps.  But she shrugged it off.  After looking around in the room for a bit, she realized that nothing had fallen.  She went downstairs and asked Kate about the statue.30

"What statue?"31

"The statue that is in your parents bed room.  Did your father get it in Africa?"32

"I don't know.  I don't remember any statue."33

Amy decided to forget it and relax for the rest of the night.34

Nothing happened for an hour and then another sound was heard.  This time, it was not a sound that could be easily waved away.35

To Be Continued36
