Opposites Attract Chapter 6

Sitting in Mr. T's math class the next day was kind of strange. I felt really guilty, looking at Maddie the whole time.1

We hadn't talked to each other since Saturday. I think she was pretty pissed at me for ditching her. One, she had to walk home 5 blocks by herself. Then when she got home, her mom beat her up post math test grade. She couldn't call me because I had my phone turned off (on purpose), but when I got all of my voicemails this morning, I felt bad. Today she had a whole bunch of bruises on her arm, and I could tell there were some on her legs too by the way she walked. 2

Maddie's mom is kind of crazy. She beats her up over bad grades, because she wasn't accepted into college. She wants Maddie to go so bad, I don't know. I don't even know if I'll go to college. My parents can't afford it. 3

"Ok guys, here's how you divide negative exponents..." Mr. T droned on and on. I wanted class to end really badly, because next was lunch, when I could apoligize to Maddie. At the end of class, Maddie scooped up all of her books and bolted out the door. I wanted to chase her, but I would just see her in the lunch room. 4

I just grabbed my lunch box unhurredly and headed downstairs. Kevin was already sitting at our usual table in the back corner. I sat down across from him. As I pulled out my sandwich from the bag, I saw Maddie and Derek standing in the lunch line, laughing with each other. 5

Soon Freddy swung in next to Kevin. Soon Maddie and Derek came too. But Maddie took the seat next to Freddy and Derek sat next to me. I got up and walked around the table to sit next to her, leaving my lunch box. 6

"Maddie, look," she turned towards me, unamused, "I'm really really really sorry about what happend Saturday. I know I just called Derek to ask him out for you, then got all pissed off. Then turned off my phone and abandon you to top it off. Wow, this is a sucky apology isn't it?"7

Maddie cracked a grin, but then stuffed a chicken nugget in her mouth. 8

"Ok Maddie listen, I'm sorry I basically trashed you the whole weekend, and one where you needed me too. You can crash the night at my house tonight if that will make you feel better. We can pop the popcorn, bust out the chips, and open up that Tropicana Twister. We can order sappy movies and stay up until midnight so we can sleep through Mr. T's class tommorow. What do you say?"9

"Ok Demi, let's do it." Maddie smiled, and leaned over to hug me.10

"Hey, sappy people at the end. If you're done doing wierd girl stuff, listen to this." Kevin told us. I went back to my seat and listened.11

"Hey guys, what do you say we eat outside today, you know, like last time?" 12

"Oh, yeah, let's do it!" Freddy agreed. I agreed too, because eating outside was awesome. Plus we could do anything we wanted and no one could get us in trouble. Maddie decided to trail along, after Kevin explained what it was. Even she agreed not much could go wrong.13

I took my cookies, wrapped them in a napkin, and stuffed them in my pocket. Maddie did the same with two of her chicken nuggets and some French Fries.14

We crept out the door to the cafeteria one by one. It was hard to notice us leaving since we were right next to it. We walked along the hallway like normal then ducked down a passage.15

The passage we were in was kind of against the rules. It wasn't written out, but you kind of figured it out pretty fast. It was where all the delvery trucks backed into when they dropped off the stuff. It was a lot narrower than the school hallways too. One door lead to the kitchen, one to an office, and a few to storage closets. At the end of the hall was a door where the people would go in and out from the trucks. The only problem with the door from the outside, was that there was no handle. 16

Luckily, the people are stupid enough to leave the block of wood which they keep the door open with out in plain sight. We all ducked out the door quickly, and Kevin left the block in the door. When you get outside, there is a big concrete ledge with a 5 foot drop off the edge. We all jumped off, and ran over to the side of the building. We were sitting along the edge with classrooms, so they couldn't see us. Across from us was the gym, and no one can see out those window due to the fact they are 2 stories off the ground.17

Finally we could get to the fun. Maddie started ripping off pieces of French Fries and throwing them at Derek. He took grass and tried to shove it in her face, but she was laughing too hard. I ate the rest of my cookie and then tried to enjoy the outside.18

After about 5 minutes, Derek and Maddie started talking to each other, and Kevin and Freddy were absorbed in some cafetiria food dissection. I leaned up against the brick wall and closed my eyes, but was soon interrupted.19

"Holy...crap." Derek stated, standing up, away from the window. We all looked in the direction that he was, and could not believe it. A huge, honking Coca-Cola truck was backing up around the corner, right to the truck delivery spot. 20

"Run you idiots!" I hissed frantically. We all went scrambling towards the door. 21

"Where the hell is the wood?" Kevin yelled at no one.22

"I don't know!?" Freddy screamed. My heart was pounding out of my chest. I looked over at Maddie, who looked like she was about to faint. Derek was trying to pry at the door along with Kevin, and Freddy looked horrified at the progress of the backing truck. We were doomed.
