Opposites Attract Chapter 4

After the whole kid incident, I was a little shaken during health. I wasn't sure how the plan was going to work, just because that kid almost got us into HUGE trouble. 1

After Kevin had explained the whole deal to the kid, whose name was James, he ran out of the auditorium with the money in one hand and gum in the other. Then the four of us emerged and stopped dead as Mr. T stood right there.2

"What are you doing in there, you're supposed to be in lunch!" he shouted. I guess he had every right to suspect us. Kevin was dressed in all black, I was holding used duct tape, and Derek was holding the roll of it; plus Freddy had five packs of gum in his hand.3

After a minute of extremly uncomfertable silence, Derek spoke up. "Well Mr. T, this-this is really hard for me to say," he began, "but, I-I have the HUGE OBSESSIVE NEED for science. And my friends were just trying to help me out. See, I was doing a science experiment, which is stickier, gum, or tape? But we had to do it in the dark or else someone would find out about my obsession." I wanted to hug Derek sooo bad just then. NOT BECAUSE I LIKED HIM, it was because he had probably just saved us all from suspension. 4

"Who was that little kid then?" Mr. T asked, completely trying to bust us.5

Derek seemed to pause, so after a really sudden thought, I jumped in.6

"That kid was on his way to a class, and he found us in there. We couldn't get him to keep quiet, so we gave him 15 dollars and some gum to not mention it."7

Kevin, Freddy and Derek all looked at me amusingly, probably because I had just said the most convincing lie that one of us had told before.8

"Very well," Mr. T said calmly, "since you did break school rules by having gum and going in the auditorium without permission, each of you gets a detention. And Derek, I won't tell anyone about your obsessive problems, but Mrs. Lecell will be told to give you extra science work. Now go to lunch!"9

All of us ran away quickly, glad to make it out of there safely. 10

"Crap, now I have more science homework. I hate that freakin' kid." Derek murmured as he trotted alongside me.11

So now, sitting in the health room, hardly making it out of that situation without a suspension, I wasn't sure if I wanted to pull through with this. Maddie knew about my worry, and she tried to comfort me at lunch, but it didn't work. She and Derek were working on chewing the gum during Health, passing smiles back and forth. 12

I will admit it would have been much more akward that my best guy friend and my best friend were sitting there flirting with each other if this whole thing hadn't happend. When our health teacher, Ms. Pickle, turned to write on the board, I saw Derek pass a note to me to pass to Maddie that said, "Done with S K O O L, 3 more letters to go." I smiled, happy that the plan was going fine.13

At the end of class, Maddie ran over to Derek and they gave each other a high five, although they looked like they wanted to do more than that. But sure enough, Maddie walked over to me, and slung her arm around my waist14

"Hey Demi, are you okay? You didn't seem okay in class." She asked concerned.15

"I don't know, the whole thing just makes me shake." I said, leaning on her shoulder.16

"You mean having detention? But you've had it so many times, why should this one matter?"17

"No not detention, it's just that, this is probably the best plan we've ever had, the one that's hardest to get busted, the one that we would be in so much trouble for, and we almost got completely busted if Derek hadn't thought so fast." 18

"Yeah, well you have a good point, but it was great Derek saved you." Maddie got a cheesey look on her face. 19

"Mad, bigger problems here!" I said, "stop dreaming, start helping!"20

"Sorry, sorry, okay, here's my take. You ALMOST got busted, which is awful, but you DIDN'T, that's the thing."21

"Good point," I shrugged, and bent over towards my locker. 22

When I looked up, I saw Maddie and Derek talking, and both smiling. Now I was starting to feel the akwardness, paying me back a visit.
