~Chapter One~
Without a second thought, Callie stumbled to her feet and rushed into the house with Hayden in her arms. By the time she made it to the kitchen and reached for the phone, she was gasping for air, and could feel a slight pain in her side. She dialed 9-1-1, and as the operator answered, began to caress Hayden's cheek.
"Nine one, is this emergency or non-emergency?"
"Emergency!"
"What is your emergency?"
"They've been shot!" Callie exclaimed. "M-my husband and my son." She finished on a whimper as the scene played in front of her eyes like a silent movie.
"Are they still alive?"
"My son is still breathing, but...my husband-." She couldn't finish the sentence, as tears sprang to her eyes once more.
"We're sending the life squad right over. They should be there within ten minutes. Would you like me to stay on the line with you?"
"Yes...please...I'm worried about my son." She told him
"You said he was still breathing?"
"Yes, sir."
"Is he conscious?"
"No, I don't think so...he isn't moving or speaking...and his eyes are closed."
"Does he feel cold to you?"
"Well, yes. But we were outside...had just gotten home...it's raining." She replied, in a horrible attempt to explain what had happened, to explain what she continued to see playing over and over again right in front of her.
"Get some warm towels...blankets...find anything to wrap him in or just drape around him to keep him warm." The operator explained.
"Okay." She replied, and headed for the stairs, going to Hayden's room. "I hear sirens!" Callie exclaimed.
"Good, they will take care of you from here."
"Thank you..." She murmured and hung up the phone as she hurried into Hayden's room. She grabbed his Alvin & The Chipmunks travel blanket to wrap him in, it was his favorite.
The EMT's came into the house as she was making her way back down the stairs. They gave her a curious look, and she watched them with blurred vision as tears stung her eyes and began to streak down her face again.
"The man...operator...he told me to keep him warm." She explained.
"You shouldn't have moved him, miss."
"But...he's not dead, he's alive!" She cried. She was nearing hysterics now, and she trembled dangerously as they took Hayden from her.
"What about my husband?" She asked, softly.
"The coroner will be along to get him, I'm afraid there is nothing we can do for your husband."
"I don't have to be here do I?" She asked quickly. The men looked at each other and back at her. "I want to go to the hospital...I want to ride there with my son." She explained, noting the suspicious look they exchanged. "I'm not running! I have nothing to run from! I just want to be with my son!" She cried.
"I'm afraid you'll have to wait here for the lead investigator of the case, miss."
"Rivers...Mrs-." She bit her lip, to keep it from trembling. "Ms. Rivers..." She corrected. "I have to go with him...please, you don't understand. Hayden is afraid of doctors...he'll be terrified if I'm not there with him." She explained
"The lead investigator should be here soon...I'm sorry." And with that, they turned, and pushed the gurney that Hayden's small body was strapped to now, toward the ambulance.
Callie stared after them, how could this be happening? They were taking her son from her. Why couldn't she go with him? It didn't make any sense! The next thing she knew, they were pulling away from the curb, sirens blaring as they rushed away.
"HAYDEN!" She screamed, and took off running after the ambulance. "Hayden!" She yelled again, then they were turning out of sight, and the sirens were fading as they took her son further and further from her. She stopped running, and fell to her knees on the sidewalk, and again she began to sob.
A few minutes later, she was back on her front lawn. She stretched out beside her dead husband, and for the second time, rested her head on his chest as the tears poured from her eyes.
"Watch for him, Nate...if he leaves me too...you make sure he isn't alone...please." She pleaded, softly. "I don't understand any of this..." She confided in him. "I don't understand why He took you from me, or why He's trying to take Hayden too." She murmured. Her tears had finally stopped, and suddenly she felt drained. The cold rain had penetrated through her clothes and adrenaline, and now she was cold...so cold.
She could feel the cold, deep into her soul and couldn't help but wonder if it would ever go away...or if she would feel this cold forever. She shivered once; twice...her eyes began to close. She fought to keep them open, knew she should get up...change into something warm. But she didn't, she wouldn't...she couldn't. She shivered again, and had to clench her teeth to keep her jaw from trembling.
Distantly, Callie could hear sirens again, and she meant to sit up, but everything went black.
