Finding Lexy

Chapter 11

A black beetle scuttled across the floor. 2

She shivered, despite the oppressive humidity. Prison is not supposed to be comfortable. Her hand slid down her leg and across her bare foot. Bugs have always been one of her worst fears.3

She knew going into this that she would have to be willing to pay the piper should she ever get caught, only she never really anticipated the slip up she made; the mistake that got her into this mess in the first place. Had she been more careful with whom she trusted, she would have been free as a bird today, in more ways than one. 4

Lesson one; never let your guard down, she was mentally recording this in the hopes that she would one day be a free woman. 5

By her count, it had only been two days that she has been here. Sill recovering from some nasty bruises she sustained when the plane she chartered went down. That’s the last thing she could remember, they were over Brazil she could see the green of the rainforest below. It happened so suddenly, there was a lot of turbulence, and then smoke from the engine flooded the cockpit, the next thing she could remember she was laying on the ground with people were all around her –Spanish, she could make out only a bit. The pilot did not make it, she understood that. She was first taken to a hospital. She was resting when suddenly three men in what looked like a military uniform, burst into her room and dragged her out in a van. They did not tell her why; they threw her from the van to this cell where she sits now. Aside from this, she doesn’t know much only that she is hungry and sore and she wants to go home. 6

Chapter 2 7

“Mary, get Raul on the phone right away please” Robert was usually a very courteous man, but his wife was missing and this time he had a very bad feeling. 8

It felt like forever, “Sir, I have Raul for you, line one.” 9

He picked up line one before Mary had finished, “Lexy is missing, it’s real this time Raul.” 10

“Woa, man, calm down, back up a minute, what do you mean she is missing?” 11

“She hasn’t been home for two days, all of her stuff is here, her jewelry, her clothes, her car… her credit cards are even here,” he could feel the panic creeping into his throat tightening its grip around his vocal cords as he tried to speak.12

Raul has been his best friend since they were thrown together as roommates at Yale. At that time, Robert was studying to be a doctor, Raul, an attorney although sometimes it seemed like Rauls’ studies were in the art of the party. Over the years Raul has become not only his attorney, but his best friend and confidante. If he were to trust anyone would help him out here, it was Raul.  13

“OK buddy,” using his most soothing courtroom voice, “stay calm, take some deep breaths, I’m on my way over, ok?” 14

“Please hurry, should I be calling the police?”15

“Whatever you do, don’t call the police yet, it will be all over the news before you hang up, the last thing you need right now are a bunch of reporters hanging around. Why don’t you do some checking, call the airlines, your bank, and check for any withdrawals.” He hesitated and then, “You know I love Lexy Robby, but, she has taken off on you before.” 16

“Yeah, but it’s different this time,” his voice trailed off and Raul had hung up already anyway. It’s something that a husband knows, when his wife is in trouble. 17

Sure he and Lexy have had their problems, and God knows Lexy had some problems of her own, but they were working on them, together. He was sure she wasn’t seeing anyone else. She had spent all of her time lately alone, being quite introspective. She was seeing a therapist he knew, but other than that she actually seemed to have cut off most of her contact with the outside world. 18

The phone rang and startled him. “Lex?” 19

Chapter 320

“No it’s Marian,” her mother great, what was he going to tell her, “where is my daughter Robert?” 21

“Marian listen, don’t panic, I am checking everywhere, I’ve called all the hospitals around here, nobody fitting her description has been admitted, I don’t think we have a reason to panic.” He closed his eyes and waited for the reply. 22

“How long has it been Robert?” he shouldn’t have taken her off guard like that. 23

“Marian stay calm, she has not been home since Tuesday, I had rounds that morning and from there I went straight to the office, I didn’t even call her. She was here when I left, and when I came home I figured she was at her therapy appointment, I fell asleep. Yesterday, when I woke up I figured she was out in the orchard for a walk. I called several times from the office and no answer. I started to get worried, but she is a big girl Marian, I thought maybe she needed some space.” 24

“Why haven’t you called me you bastard, this is my daughter we are talking about not one of your two bit whores,” she yelled.25

This was just what he needs right now.26

“I’m coming over,” she said before she slammed the phone down on him. 27

Lexy’s mother was something else. On the outside, she appears completely normal, attractive, intelligent, but deep down, he has concluded, she is severely imbalanced. Come to think of it, he wouldn’t even be surprised if she was hiding her somewhere just to keep her away from him. A sigh escaped his lips, that would be the best one of all the scenarios that were floating across his mind. 28

He loved her so much that sometimes it literally hurt. Lexy was always such a handful. 29

Chapter 430

Ok he needed to get a hold of himself. He was always very organized, that drove Lexy crazy, but he thought that would be the best thing to do right now. Make a list of what he has done so far, what needs to be done and any possibilities of where she could be. So far he checked the hospitals, (names of hospitals?).  He called their apartment in the City, no answer. The doorman, yes he hadn’t thought of that but how would she have gotten there? Her car was here. Damn it her keys were here.  31

Suddenly something he hadn’t considered crossed his mind. The orchard, she was out there everyday walking, thinking, writing suppose she got hurt out there and couldn’t make it back. There were hundreds of acres out there, how would he know where to look? 32

Author notes

Just the very beginning of an idea floating through my mind...I would appreciate any feedback on whether it is even worth continuing...Thanks!

Lexy..is that you? You had said you'd like that as a penname..hehehe. This is pretty good, I love the whole idea! Interesting start, you got me on your "hook" ... The only tiny mistakes I found were typos, run-on sentences and a few tense shifts. Your methods of characterization are impeccable...I really enjoy them; I personally find that describing a character asides from direct statements is challenging. Anyways, good start and yes it is worth continuing and revising of course
