Part Five:1
Jesse heard the loud thundering of his alarm clock at 7:30 that morning. He rolled over and pulled his pillow over his ears, trying to deafen himself from the horrid buzzing. Nothing could block out that racket. All the noise clouded his dream and he slowly saw Bethany drifting farther and farther away. Without opening his eyes, Jesse found the snooze button and pushed it, which took more energy then such little movement should. Jesse opened his eyes slightly, but quickly shut them again when a searing light seemed to blast through his brain. Cursing the sun for it’s potent rays, Jesse rubbed the sleep out of his eyes, and attempted to get out of bed, but only managed to tumble off onto a pile of clothes. He searched blindly through the cloth, and just grabbed whatever felt like it wouldn’t be too wrinkled. He slipped the shirt over his head and finally stood. He opened his eyes wide enough to see what he looked like. 2
‘Good enough.’ He thought as he looked up and down in front of his mirror. Actually, he was proud of his sightless choice. He had chosen one of his favorite shirts, and both the pants and shirt weren’t wrinkled at all. He stumbled his way to the bathroom where he brushed his teeth and did his hair with as much enthusiasm as could be mustered, and could hear his mother downstairs probably making him some big breakfast that he wouldn’t be able to eat. He slid down the stair railing into the kitchen where, as he had expected, his mom had made a huge breakfast with his little brother, Brian sitting at the table munching on a piece of bacon, and his dog, Buster sitting under the table, begging for scraps.3
“Don’t slide on the railing Jesse. I don’t know how many times I have to tell you, but your father is not going to fix it again if it breaks because of your reckless behavior.” Ordered his mother from the refrigerator. Jesse rolled his eyes and grabbed a couple of pieces of toast, shoving some egg and bacon between them, and eating as fast as he could. Jesse’s mother came over to the table and gave Jesse a disappointed look. “If you’re going to eat breakfast like that, then at least have some orange juice will you! You’re going to choke one of these days!” Jesse grabbed the carton of orange juice and drank straight from it as he grabbed his bag and headed out the door. Jesse could hear his mom screaming at him as the door closed after him. 4
Jesse walked over to his car, jumped in and started it. He pulled out of his driveway, and pulled up in front of Bethany’s house. He sat there and waited, but Bethany didn’t come running out like she normally did. Instead, Bethany’s mom came walking out in her bathrobe and yelled to him in her shrill voice that Bethany had already left. Jesse felt his anger begin to rise again, and before he could say anything to her mom, he slammed his foot on the gas and soared down the road. As he turned onto the main street that would lead to the school, he thought of something that he hadn’t thought of before. Bethany had never been kissed before. He took her first kiss! For some strange reason, Jesse was kind of proud of himself, yet he was completely disgusted! How could he? Well, there was no more time to think about it as he pulled into the school parking lot and began his seemingly endless search for a parking space.5
