The Story of a Friendship Part Four

Jesse rolled over in his bed and thought about that one moment he had with Bethany, when everything just seemed to feel right.  He couldn’t remember on fleeting second in that passion that he regretted anything, but now that he thought about it, how stupid he seemed.  He forced himself on her!  How could he do such a thing?  How could he do something like that to his best friend, and mess her up?  He might have just screwed up their relationship.  He should have waited!  That’s what he should have done!  He should have waited until she was ready and then taken some other, less bold approach to it.  Jesse punched his pillow a few times to flatten it before lying back down and staring blankly at the ceiling.  There was nothing more for him to do other then wait.  He just had to wait for Bethany to come to him. 1

‘But she didn’t resist!  She was all mine until that stupid phone call!’ Jesse cursed those things called cell phones and parents who always wanted to know where he was.  She did resist though, and that was the thing.  He did all that for her, and all he got was one measly little kiss that didn’t even last more then a moment, maybe!  He was disappointed and a little angry with Bethany for her poor actions in showing her appreciation.  Jesse growled under his breath and thrashed around in his sheets.  He just couldn’t get comfortable!  He rolled over onto his stomach and again punched the pillow until it was so flat that it seemed to blend in with the sheets.  There was no comfort in anger, as he soon found.  Thoughts streamed in and out of his mind, giving no rest to his eyes.  2

Jesse jumped out of bed and switched on the light on his bedside table.  Near his bed, leaning against a wall was his beautiful guitar that had taken him so long to earn.  Jesse reached over and slung the shoulder strap over his head, and sat the guitar across his knee.  Jesse strummed a cord on the guitar and felt the vibrations of the strings on his fingertips.  He sat and waited for a melody to come into his head.  Any melody.  Nothing came.  Not even a song from one of his favorite bands!  Absolute silence fogged his mind.  3

‘Maybe some fresh air will clear my thoughts.’ He thought to himself as he climbed off of his warm bed and shuffled on his bare feet over to the window.  He fumbled with the clasp of the window for a moment before finally sliding if open with a squeak of unused hinges.  A soft, cool breeze floated in carrying the sweet smell of moist dirt and fresh moisture all around.  The rain had stopped and only the clouds remained.  Jesse took it all in.  He savored every new scent and every puff of a new breeze.  Finally, he could think again.  Jesse went back to his bed and picked back up his beloved guitar.  A faint, haunting melody floated into his mind, like a soft lullaby sung by a small child to the night sky.4

“I see the moon.  The moon sees me.  The moon sees somebody that I want to see.  So God bless the moon.  And God bless me.  And God bless that somebody I want to see.”  Jesse sung this softly to himself as his fingers moved lightly over his guitar, feeling every string as if it were individual and singular on the guitar.  He played this over and over again until his mind was quieted and his eyelids began to sink, hiding his eyes from his dimly lit room.  His voice became quieter and quieter until it died in the stillness of the night.  He set his guitar next to his bed, lay down, and curled up underneath his sheets before drifting off into a peaceful night full of dreams. 5

The moon stared down at Bethany as she twirled around on her front lawn as if she had no cares in the entire world, and the whole world was her stage.  Her hair hung loosely down in wet strands and she wore a long, breezy dress of light blue as she swam in a pool of moonlight almost as if just for him alone.  Her small feet danced across the grass as if they weren’t even touching the ground.  Then Bethany looked up right as where Jesse seemed to be, and she smiled, laughing faintly.  As her laugh glided over him, the rain began to fall.  Tiny raindrops played off of Bethany’s hair and tickled her skin.  Her light blue dress began to cling to her, and he could see every outline of her figure.  She was beautiful, and all for him.  Jesse could feel himself reaching down to kiss her, and could feel her warmth as he lay on top of her as he had done before.  Jesse smiled in his sleep as that dream continued through the night and well into the morning.  That same morning that should have been an early wake up for the first day of school.6
