I broke something
long ago
That I never thought
might fix itself
So I threw it away
and lived my life
as if it didn't matter
One day
Two days
A Month
A Year
A lifetime
Then I looked in the trash
and saw my broken heart
was gone
never to fail me again
But still
I did not see it
did not use it
And time passed
as it has a tendency to do
One day
Two days
A Month
A Year
A lifetime
I could not find that broken heart
my silent timepiece
But this time
I worried
Where had it gone?
Had it abondoned me
or had I abondoned it?
I searched for too long
Then gave it up
A lost cause
But it couldn't last
One day
Two days
A Month
A Year
A lifetime
I had long since stopped searching
when there came a day
that you walked into my life
A little ball of sunshine
that I could not avoid
even if I had wanted to
You reached into your pocket
and withdrew a heart shaped box
that you handed to me with a smile
I took it and opened it
only to find
that you had my heart all along
So I gave it back to you for
One day
Two days
A Month
A Year
A lifetime

might fix itself

Author notes
I tried to give up on love. I almost succeeded, but then people came into my life and helped me see that I could try to give it up as much as I wanted, but love would never give up on me. It's harder to love than it is to just quit trying (and this is spoken from my vast experience of living without loving), but love is definitely worth the trouble.
