Not that I have ever wanted to be little miss popularity, but someone to say 'goodbye' as I am getting off the bus would be nice. In particular the boy that sits across the aisle.1
The only person with whom I have even the slightest bit of communication is the bus driver. Though every day he calls me Nicole. After the first week I stopped correcting him.2
The redhead--everyone thinks he's Irish, but he's really Dutch--with the slickest tongue. He can slide one of his satiric comments about the current presidency, or the kid wreaking general annoyance in the back of the bus when it seems that the rest of the world has consumed the space for some humor. But he still does it, and leaves everyone laughing. The popular kids, the nerds, the freshmen... But I, flying alone with my headphones turned up, can't laugh. I can't pretend to fit in... It would be bizarre. 'Hey, kid. Why are you laughing?... Just go listen to your punk [said with contempt].' Excuse me. Didn't mean to intrude [rolls eyes].3
Ah, but then one by one, they exit the bus, and I am still ignored... Jonah--the redhead--draws Canadian flags everywhere, and now he is drawing one in the condensation covering the windows. He wipes a wet hand on the knee of his pants and looks out the window. Only a few people are still on the bus (he and I included).4
How many times have I wished I could slide over to his seat and sift through his thoughts? Have him run his mind through mine. Whisper our own language that nobody would understand, even if somebody was on the bus with us still.5
What are his dreams? His subconscious thoughts, his wishes, desires. His hopes and fears.6
What is his middle name? His favorite color? What bands does he love? Does he even like music? Is he religious? Does he like the rain?7
I wish I could ask him these and a thousand other questions. Store his answers for future reference. Get to know him in a million different ways.8
Maybe, maybe not. I don't know. I find that I say that phrase a lot--'I don't know'--but this time it's true. Ah, the future. Never will I know what tomorrow will find, yadda yadda. All that generic nonsense.9
I wish tomorrow I would find Jonah.10
