“Cut the crap, Ayumu! I’ve been looking up and down for you and you just disappeared! You were supposed to be back this morning and it’s already dark! Why must you always do that!? You can’t be back when-“ She was silenced when he put his finger over her lips, telling her to be quite. He slowly took his finger away to see if she’d finally shut up. When he was met with silence he breathed in and slowly exhaled.1
“My mission ran over. Something…unexpected popped up and I had to take care of it. Nothing bad happened to me, okay? See, I’m fine. No scratches.” He said holding out his arms so she could see he was fine. She just looked at him with eyes that at first glance said ‘I hate you’, but if you looked close enough then you’d see that she still loved her brother. “You need to calm down. You don’t need to be pissed off because I’m not there when you expect me to be. I don’t stay in one place, you know that. Now come on, we need to go back to the village.” He removed the net and began to walk off. She jumped up and chased after him. She lunged at him, successfully knocking him down.2
“Don’t walk away from me! I’m not done with you!” She said punching him lightly in the back of the head.3
“Okay but could you please get off my back?” He said calmly. She got off his back and watched him get up.4
“Why are you always so calm? I’ve never seen you show any emotion besides the calm, dazed look you always have on your face. I want to see something besides that.” He didn’t say anything. He’d never show her anything else. He had no reason to.5
“I’m calm because it’s the best way to deal with everything. You know what you need? You need a boyfriend.” He stated.6
“I don’t a man. They always try and tell you what to do because they think they’re better than everyone else.” She countered.7
“Yes, you do. I can’t give the sort of attention you’re starting to need. As a 16 year old girl, you need a relationship and the type of relationship that you need is one that I can’t give you.” He explained starting to walk off. She followed him.8
“How do you figure that?” She asked. He sighed. He was going to have to go into bigger detail. Maybe a couple of questions.9
“I don’t know how you figure that but lets ask you some questions. What kind of attention do you want?” She thought for a minute.10
“I’m not sure. I want to be loved, I know that.”11
“Okay. Do you think I can give you that love?”12
“Yes…no…my gut says yes and my brain says no.”13
“Good. Go with you brain then. What kind of love are you looking for?” She refused to answer that one. Some of the images that her brain had given her were not something she wanted to share with her brother. “Are you going to answer my question?”14
“…No…”15
“Why?” She began to blush at the thought of getting that attention. She sure as hell wasn’t going to tell him those pictures. To her they were wrong but if someone else looked at them, they’d find nothing wrong with them. She wasn’t good with emotions and she wasn’t comfortable with some of the ways she wanted love. Her gut told her she only needed her family. That all she wanted was him to show some other emotion besides calm and dazed. But her brain kept giving her pictures of her snuggling with someone or being curled up on the couch asleep next to someone. Those weren’t feelings she was accustomed to.16
“I don’t want to tell you those pictures.” She said.17
“They scare you, don’t they?” He watched as she shook her head yes. “I thought so. You think they’re wrong. They’re not wrong, Mizuki. It’s normal to want that. You don’t need to center your life around me. I’m not the only person here. I can’t give you what you want. You have to find someone else to do that.” With that said, he left her to think.18
