Have you ever seen that girl in the back of the class just sitting there? Her hair is always down in her face and doesn’t talk to anyone. She sits alone in the bathroom during her lunch period. She walks with her head down in between classes and says nothing to anyone. Have you seen her talk to anyone? Do you know her family life? Do you even know her name? My name is Raven Sterling and I’m that girl you know nothing about.1
Sitting in the back of English, I’m doodling on my notebook and the bell rings. “Raven, I’d like to see you,” Mr. Williams says. With a sigh I pack up and sit back down. Without saying a word he answers my question, “You’re not in trouble, Raven. I’d just like to ask you something.”2
He walks back to my seat and sits on the desk. I never really looked at his smile until now. It’s very beautiful. Wait why am I thinking this about my teacher? Shaking my thoughts away asking, “What do you need Mr. Williams?” I might as well smile back.3
“You have a beautiful smile, Raven.” Both of us keep smiling for awhile. “I never see you smile, I always see you with your head down and drawing in this notebook,” he points to my sketch pad in front of me. “This brings me to my reason for holding you back. Is there anything you wanna talk about? I hate seeing my students depressed.”4
“I’m not depressed, Mr. Williams,” I say defensively. Looking back down I start drawing on my notebook. I have no clue what I’m drawing, it just ends up as lines.5
“Okay, okay I’m sorry,” he looks a little hurt then looks up at me with his smile again. Of course I smile back. He put his hand on my shoulder and quietly says to me, “I’m here if there’s anything you need to talk about. Raven, you’re a bright girl, and I know you can accomplish many things in your life. Don’t hide anymore.” I smile back, but my smile fades with Tucker walks in.6
“Baby, I’ve been waiting,” he sees that Mr. Williams’ hand was still on my shoulder and gave him this awful look. “Get in the car, Raven!” He screams and points toward the door. “Now I said!” I run out the door as fast as I can. Going to the car wasn’t my plan.7
I hunched down close the doorway and listen. “Tucker, is it?” Mr. Williams asked. I don’t appreciate the way you come into my classroom and treat Raven like that.” I can hear him trying to stay calm.8
Tucker wasn’t so nice back. “I don’t care,” he pauses between each word. “I don’t appreciate you touching my girlfriend.” Tucker becomes sterner, “Stay away from Raven. I know your past, remember?”9
With what Tucker said, Mr. Williams becomes shaky. “They never found proof, Tuck. I’ll leave her alone.”10
I whisper to myself as I walk quickly to his car, “What happened before?”11
