The Colossus

Listen:
The dreamers do reveal to me their ire.
I escort them to my shadowed shire,
wherein imagination is the higher
of it and the concrete.
Hark, I let them dream!1

Meet!
Speak!
Speak in tones unhushed
Hush the plans, entrust
No-one with the stuff
That you should decide
Wide, sweeping plans - create
Stop, deliberate:
Plans be grand, aspire!
A decision.2

These men are with the people's might imbued.
Architects construct a plan in blue:
a goal not even dream can misconstrue.
A frame of great moment.
Hark, I let them dream!3

Draw!
Sketch!
Sketch the plans that shall
Bring up the tower, tall
Taller than the dreamers
Taller than the clouds
White lines trace softly on
An iridescent blue
Our will shall make it true!
A plan!4

The workers come, in groups or all alone.
They come to lay their fantasies like stones.
The foreman calls, in trained and billowed tones
"Make the dreams your bricks!"
Hark, I let them dream!5

Tough,
Hard,
Hardy are the workers
Harder than their hard hats
Harder than their souls
The coals - that dwell inside their heart
Hardy are their hearts,
Hard, because they build
A tower in their dreams
A building!6

The poets will inscribe the towers base
with flower-laden stanzas, in a trace.
A scrawl with fleeting effervescent grace,
A plaque like old colossi!
Hark, I let them dream!7

Inked,
Black,
Black the ink that flows
Blacker is the night
Backed with muslin black
Blackest near the dawn
Poets, write! The night
Will back your pleasant verse!
Blackened be your rhyme.
An inscription!8

"This tower's made by our collective dream,
Though terrific and imposing, it may seem
There's hope, from it's construction we may glean
A lasting human pride
This is what we built!9

A tower!
