A Highschool Horror {3}

At the sight of seeing the man no longer there, Tobi screamed out of terror. His cold sweat had gotten worse, followed soon by goose pimples. His scream echoed through the halls in the school and was heard by Sam and Nicole who’d finally caught up with him. He still stood at the front doors, looking down the hallway opposite the band room. His eyes were wide and his jaw hung open but no words escaped his lips. If the boy had tried to move, it would have proved useless. It felt has if he was glued to the spot by some unknown force that was stronger than gravity. 1

“Tobi, what is it?” Nicole asked him. Tobi looked over to her with his fear stricken eyes. 2

“There…there was a man.” He said, but failed to explain further. “Do you hear it?”3

“Here what?” Sam asked. 4

“The sound. The chains.” Tobi pointed toward the hallway with a shaky hand. Sam was now frightened, but didn’t show it. So she wasn’t the only one who’d heard the chains. 5

“I don’t hear anything. Nor do I see anything.” Nicole said. “You must be hallucinating.” Tobi looked over at her sharply, his eyes no longer holding as much fear as before. 6

“I didn’t say that you were hallucinating when you saw Ms. Rivera go through the wall! Do you think I’m going insane? No, I think you’re going insane!” he yelled at her. Sam took Tobi by the shoulders.7

“Quit it, Tobi!” She told him forcefully. “No one is losing their heads. Okay, so you saw a man in the hallway and Nicole saw that woman go through a wall. That’s two against one so maybe there is something going on here.” Tobi calmed down and shook his head. 8

“I got to get out of here.” He said. 9

“We can’t, we’re locked in.” Nicole said to him. To prove her point, she went and pulled on one of the handles of the front doors as Tobi had done before. As soon as her skin touched the cold metal, the cafeteria lights went out, leaving the three enveloped in darkness. Nicole screamed out of fear, pulling her hand back away from the doors. It met with her other hand over her chest, trying to conceal the sound of her pounding heart. When her lungs were out of breath and when her scream’s echo dismissed itself, the low sound of an evil laughter filled her ears. This was followed by the sound of rattling chains. There was no doubt now that the girl was scared, and afraid for her life and her friends’ lives. Coming back on with a flicker, the cafeteria lights revealed that she was alone. Neither Sam nor Tobi was present. 10

Nicole took a step back away from the front doors. She stared out at the lights in the parking lot and the glimmering silver that the moon cast on her face. This was no dream she was in. This was a reality and she wondered if she would make it through this night alone. She wasn’t scared too easily; but then again she had never been in a situation where she was the one being toyed with by a ghost. And she too, like Sam, firmly believed in the strange apparitions. But Sam was also right that they shouldn’t let their beliefs get to their heads in this situation. Though one can’t help but let the thoughts enter their minds. 11

She stood in her silence, looking around in the darkness to see if she could find her friends. But still, just like before, they were nowhere to be found. Her silence, though, was quick to be broken. From behind her came an odd scratching sound. It was as if someone was scrapping their nails along with walls of the school. Nicole was hesitant to turn. Many ideas of what the noise could be ran through her head. All of them she knew couldn’t happen, but one could only think. She took a deep breath, her fists clenched at her sides, and turned to see what was making the now louder sound. Her breathing stopped.12

There before her, about as large as a horse with glowing red eyes stood a spider. Its thousand eyes glimmered with the little light the cafeteria gave off. A clear slime dripped down its foot long fangs, ending in a puddle at its hairy eight legs. There was no nightmare that Nicole could think of to match this sight before her. More than anything on God’s green earth did she fear more than a spider. Gathering her breath, she screamed as loud as her lungs would allow. This was followed by a high pitched screech from the spider, who lifted its two front legs in a sign to show that it was about to attack. Nicole turned and took off running toward the band room. From behind she could hear the heavy steps of eight legs behind her along with the monster’s screech. 13

To get into the band room, there is a separate hallway leading to it and the chorus room. As quick as she could, Nicole whipped open the door to the band hall and closed the door by force, shutting it on one of the spider’s legs. Its deathly scream became louder and Nicole had to cover her ears while she ran into the band room. It was more spacious than the chorus room and there were more places to hide. Coming into the room, she stopped to catch her breath. She turned to face the door. Still at the first door, she could hear the spider’s heavy pounding and scratching, eager to get inside. It was hungry; Nicole knew that for sure. But there was no way that she was going to be its food. 14

There was a loud crash and then silence. Nicole took a step back, knowing that maybe the spider had broken through its barrier and was now headed toward her. From the window in the door, she could see the first two legs of the spider coming toward the band room, then its eyes. A small scream escaped her lips and she ran towards the guitar room. The band teacher had two guitar classes and during their other classes the students kept their guitars in a large room that also held some of the strings classes’ instruments. It was empty now, being about nine at night. Or was it? Nicole didn’t know the time, and at this moment she didn’t care. The only she cared about was getting out of the legs of the monster chasing her. She closed the guitar room door behind her and sat down near one of the shelves. She could see through the crack between the two doors. 15

It was quiet for a few seconds. The only thing she could hear was her own stressed breathing. She could start to feel sweat rolling down her temples. But her silence was broken by a smash. The spider had broken down the door to the band room and was now possibly on to Nicole’s scent. She could hear the monster’s heavy steps, but suddenly, they stopped. She peered out the crack between the doors and no longer saw the spider. She leaned back upon the shelf and sighed out of relief. 16

The door opened fast and Nicole jumped. She screamed from instinct until her air was gone. There in the doorway was a man. His face was concealed in the darkness but Nicole could see the chains that were strapped around his hands and ankles. They looked as though they had been broken from much force. The silhouette of his hair made him look like a mad man, going in every which way. The figure tilted his head to left, like when a dog becomes confused. After a few seconds, he tilted it to the right. He turned quickly and disappeared into the darkness. Nicole sat frightened before she fainted from the fear that pulsed through her veins. 17
