Putting a child into care never accomplishes anything. Never do it, unless you don’t have any choice at all on the matter. Even then, it is a horrible, desolate act to do so. The children you can purchase at such establishments come in a variety of joyful packages; underfed; force-fed; neglected; spoilt; ruined and paranoid.

By the way, what do people think about the colouring of this?

Ooh, I like the colours. And the lines. The main blackish colour is pretty cool, and then the other greyish colour actually reminds me of line, a highway type colouring.
I have to get around to reading that story sometime too. I promise too... someday (:

"Desolate" describes places more so than actions.
Still, a very interesting opening line. I'm guessing this is the opening of a fantasy, sci-fi, or otherwise speculative story (my hint was the word "purchase"). Also, specify what establishments you're talking about. The reader can guess, but it would make more sense to specifically say "orphanages" or what have you.
I'm not sure I understand what your character means by "never accomplishes anything"--obviously it does something, otherwise no one would do it. It gets an unwanted child off the parents' hands, for example.
Thanks for entering the contest, and good luck!

It's steely. The colour, that is. It's almost like a b+w film? And the pink sets it off really well. It's nice and subtle. As in... not blinding. But still snazzy.
Yay for colour scheme.
