    I think you'd need to add a little bit more on to this opening for it to be a hook. I do like the way you introduced the character's name (too many people forget to put that in the beginning!) and the atmosphere (Italian, I assume, or Italianate Fantasy) right away.

    I'm especially intrigued by the word "THE" in "THE Scion of the Gods." I'd love to know how Cassandra gained that identity!
