Jaina's Escape

Jaina was thoroughly pissed. That was the second time that Dave had not come home in a week and she knew that something was up. It infuriated her that Dave was not satisfied with her and was going to tell him that when he got home.  So she sat and waited for him to show. It was 3:10am when he stumbled through the door, drunk and very lucid. 1

“Well, well, look what the dog dragged in. Mind telling me why you were out drinking and obviously having fun some other woman when I was here at home for you?” She asked with incredulity.2

“I didn’t need you, bitch.” He said, his eyes half-closed and his speech was slurred. “I was out having fun, something obviously you can’t do.” He cackled, his greasy complexion, looking truly hideous.3

“Get the hell out of here, Dave. You’ve crossed the line tonight and I don’t want you anywhere near me… get out!” She said, pointing towards the front door of her apartment. 4

Dave stood wobbly to his full height of 6 foot 4 inches, and said “You don’t tell me what to do!” He then swung with his right hand. 5

Surprised, Jaina was hit with the full force of his hand. Her cheek stung with sharp pain and she fell to the floor in shock. Dave came towards her again, but she remembered her self-defense training and aimed a kick for his groin. He howled and reached for her blindly. She slapped his hand away and leveled a punch at his jaw. He stumbled back, knocking over the chairs at the dining table. 6

Tripping on the chairs, he fell hard on his butt and looked up at Jaina, who was standing and ready for another attack. His eyes burned with fury, and he launched himself towards her in a bull rush. Jaina grabbed him by the hair and turning him around, with him yelling at her, she threw open her front door and threw him out into the hall. He hit the wall hard and collapsed, moaning softly.7

“Don’t come back again, scum, otherwise, you will lose more than your pride!” She yelled, slamming the door in his face. 8

She leaned against the door and collapsed. Her body racked with sobs over what had happened. He’d never been that drunk before, nor that violent and abusive. Her tears streamed down her face and she knew that he would be back and not forget the ass-kicking that he just got. 9

If tonight was any idea of how violent he could become, she didn’t want to be around when he came calling again. Gathering her resolve, she called her Aunt Sherry who lived in the country. 10

*Ring* *Ring*
11

“Hello” A woman's voice flowed out of the phone.12

“Hi, Aunt Sherry, how is everything out there?” She said, trying to keep the sorrow out of her voice. 13

“Oh, Jaina, everything’s fine. What has happened, my dear? You don’t sound so good.” She said, concern in her voice. “Oh, well, Dave and I had a fight and he was drunk.” She described the fight and how she didn’t want to be around when he came back. 14

“So can I spend some time out in the country with you and Uncle Tom?” She asked. 15

“Why, sure, Jaina, you come as soon as you can. Tom and I will make up the spare room for you.” She said, talking to Tom for a few minutes in the background about the situation and making the room ready. “Oh, by the way, Jaina, my son, Nathan, will be visiting for the summer this year. He’s in college, and is coming home this year to help out around the farm. Just wanted you to know, so, when should we expect you?”16

“Well, I plan on leaving immediately, so, I’d say in about a few hours.” She sighed, feeling true relief at having such great family. “Thank you so much for letting me come out and stay with you and Uncle Tom.” 17

“Oh, not a problem, sweetie. Besides, it will give us time to catch up. See you soon, sweetie.” She said, hanging up the line. Jaina, pressing the end button on the phone, took a deep breath and sighed.18

She felt relief flood her body, and for the first time in awhile, she didn’t feel any stress, just an anticipation of seeing the family again. She went to pack and gather her things for an extended visit. Thankfully, her job allowed her to work at home and just handle things over the internet on her laptop. 19

So, she won’t be missed for awhile anyway. After gathering everything that she would need, she packed her things in her dark blue Toyota Camry. She started the car and set off towards her Aunt’s and Uncle’s country farm.20
