No Love for Her

"Get outta here!" He shouted at her, but she still tried again, after all he was her father.1

"Daddy I promise I-" She started but again he shouted.2

"I said get outta here! What part of that do you not understand? Get. Your Ass. Out. Of. Here. Now!"3

Violet didn't even try this time she just ran out of the room trying and failing to hide the tears that ran down her face. Just as she was leaving she heard her Father talking to her step mother, "She's so annoying isn't she? She never does anything right, I don't think she can." 4

Violet ran to her bedroom before her father could come out wwith more threats, and fell through her door just managing to get it closed before she collapsed to the floor and huge sobs shook her body.5

"He doesn't want you," the little voice in the back of her head sneered in her ear, "Why do you even stay here when you know how much he hates you? Your whole family hates you, Jacob and Kristin deny they even know you."6

She didn't have the strength to argue with the words in her mind, besides she knew they were true, Jacob even told her the world would be better off if she committed suicide and he would give her his knife if she wanted to do it. Kristin always took out her anger on her and never even apologized. Neither of them trusted her even though she had always tried to be kind to them. 7

"They hate the work you do, they throw away the things you make them, and they kick you out of rooms the moment you come in. They took away everything you have! Just die already!" again Violet didn't argue with the little voice. 8

Stomps shook her bedroom floor as her father pounded toward her, she tried to get up but before she was even off the floor he burst through her door with a whole new round of insults.9

"Have you even done ANYTHING in this room?! I sent you back here to clean it yesterday!! You've been back here with your lazy ass reading books and playing with your cat havent you? I ought to put that cat to sleep, you dont give a DAMN about him!!"10

This was to much for Violet to bear, Buku was her only friend and, cat or not, she felt like he always listened to her and he always came to her when she cried. "No!" She cried, "I swear I've been cleaning! See?" she pointed to everything she had done. She ran to all the empty shelves and showed how she had dusted them, she showed him her poems which she had out in alphabetical order and had then sorted into folders which were labled and sitting where they belonged on her desk, she showed him how she had washed all three windows in her room, how she had watered her little plant, how she had changed the sheetes on her bed, how she had taken out her trash and washed out the trash cans, how she had polished the wooden chest that was her mothers and sorted everything in it, she had changed the light bulbs in her light 2 of the four had been out, and how she had even vacuumed her floor and scrubbed away some of the stains on it. He still wasnt happy.11

He went over to her desk where her poems were and snatched up the folders, which she had so carefully and beautifully decorated by hand, and pulled out some of the poems and read them aloud in a mocking voice.12

Daddy, do you love me13

Daddy, do you care14

Daddy, would it please you15

If I wasnt there?16

He ripped the poem in half and threw all her folders onto the floor and stomped on them destroying the delicate lace on some of them instantly.17

"Of course I love you!" He shouted, "What do you want me to do when you are in trouble? Play games with you? Huh? Is that what you want you little brat? Your a spoiled little bitch, thats why you dont have anything and you cant even keep the few things you have put away!" He grabbed her by the ear and held her down to face the pile of crumpled poetry and folders on the floor. Then he put her face in them like someone might put a dog's face in the mess he makes. 18

"How many times do I have to tell you we don't put stuff on the desk?! Its supposed to be empty except for the computer moniter! Do you understand me?" He said the words slowly as though he were talking to an idiot or a baby, not to Violet who was ten years old.19

"Do I need to take the moniter of the desk as well? Leave you with nothing completely?!" He had only left it to taunt her, as he had taken the mouse and keyboard and CPU she couldnt use it but just the moniter its self had become a sort of symbol for her. He always said how she might earn her things back and when ever she saw it she was always reminded about getting everything back. It boosted her a little and he knew this though he hadnt done anything about it yet.20

He jerked her up and held her close to his face. His breath hit her nose and she founght not to wrinkle her nose at his breath, it smelled of cigarette smoke and alcohol. Strongly. But she knew that they werent completely to blame for this, he always treated her like this and besides she should have known, nothing goes on her desk.21

"Now," he hissed, "get these shit excuses for poetry of your floor and GET SOME WORK DONE!!" and he threw her down and walked out, slamming the door behind him.22

He said he loved me, she though and she hastily picked up the remains of her work, he wouldnt lie so I must deserve this. He said he loved me, she repeated over and over in her head.23

He said he loved me24

He said he loved me25

....But does he?

Author notes

I REALLY hate child abuse and all forms of it should be illegal. I have been abused by a stepmother and I have a father who, while not this bad, isnt very nice to me but claims to love me. I love him but I wish he would treat me better.

I can completely relate to you, as far as the father/stepmother situation goes, though I was lucky enough to live with my mom and stepdad. While the abuse wasn't physical, poor Violet's situation is very real, and I find that the worst forms of abuse leave no scars.

Growing up, my dad and stepmom called me and my sister all kinds of horrible names, degrading us both emotionally and psychologically. He convinced me that I was a failure, unlovable, and he never accepted me for who I was. To this day, he still says that he loves me, and thinks that he can pull the wool over my eyes, because to him, I am still the eight-year-old he left thirteen years ago.

I agree with you about the blurb in your AN, as well. Great story, and good luck in the contest!

thank you, I think children of all ages (that means birth to 18) should be supported by theor parents and loved constantly. It might be hard not to explode at some point but the parent will just have to learn they knew what they were getting into when they had a baby. Ive seen parents really go overboard at their kids and I wanted o scream at them

I agree with your comments about making all child abuse illegal.

This was a very powerful and strong piece.

I've been through things like this, and so I normally find abuse pieces insulting and misleading; but, you've written this piece really well.

    I love the ending:

    "...But does he?" Very powerful.

This piece actually gave me chills.

thank you, actually Violet in the story is like me in alot of ways. Now as I said, its not this bad for me and I mean that, but I have a cat named Buku who I feel always listens to me when my father makes me cry (which he does) my brother actually did offer me a knife to commit suicide with and my brother and sister are Justin and crystal not Jacob and Kristin I just wanted similiar names. My father has taken away CPU, mouse and keyboard, and just left the moniter to taunt me. He never is happy with what I do. However, he does say I'm a good writer, and I did write that poem (daddy, do you love me...) after a 'conversation' with him

I understand where you are coming for... while I didn't have family that did this, the words said in haste or under the influence cut very deeply... thank you for sharing this today.

Til we meet again in the Darkness,
