Scarlet Roses [6]

Chapter 6:1

She stood in the door way of the counsel meeting. The topic was the "infestation" of the human(s). (Technically, there was only one, & he could be silenced very, very easily.) The human whom was being spoken about was terrified, asking for a Jocelynn & Jerod. Pfft, poor boy was out of his head. She almost felt sorry for him. Almost.
"A human found out about us," started Clarence, the oldest & wisest of them all, though his youthful face told nothing of it "It was pure carelessness on someone's part, they could have easily sealed the latch. Though it would be easy to shut the poor mortal up, I don't think I can watch him die for an error. That is all it was, an error. An error not even on the poor boy's part. Do you think it fair he dies for another fool's actions?" he continued without waiting. "I shall see to it he is fit to hold our secret, even if it means he stays here until he dies. The smell of mortal blood might make some of us a bit...thirsty, to put it delicately. But, never the less, he shall stay if I do not trust him to keep our secret. Though, I don't think he'll tell a soul, the poor boy's gone & wet his knickers already, he's terrified." he ended, eying the boy in the corner of the room, awkwardly placed at the far end of the table, his face distorted & forcing back tears of anger & fear.
The boy was mid-teen. Maybe 17 or 18. Of course, they understood why he smelled so good, but the part of why he smelled like stale beer was unknown, since the boy fainted when he was questioned. He had no idea what wandering down an alleyway was going to do to him.
...

Jocelynn awoke to the sound of scratching upon the floors. Emmet was pulling his chair to a new position, trying to get comfortable. Joce knew he was being tortured by having to sit still so long.
"Joce?" asked Emmet upon sight of her fluttering eyelashes.
"Hmm?"
"Are you alright?"
"Yes. Emmet?"
"Hmm?"
"What happened to Elliott?"
"He was sent before the counsel, they are keeping him here for a while."
"Can I see him Emmet?"
"I don't think that's a good idea, Joce."
"Why not?" pouted Joce.
"Because of the counsel's law, no other vampyres are allowed to speak to him but the head of the counsel."
"Emmet, remember, I am not a full fledged vampyre." he thought for a moment then sighed & shook his head no.
"I highly dislike this restriction."
"I know you do Joce. I'll be right back, don't move." she snorted
"Ha! Like I can!" he smiled & walked out of the room.
Moments later, a knock on the door came.
"Yes?"
"Joce? Joce, can I come in? It's me, er...Elliott."
"Yes! Yes, come in, come in."
"You seem to be feeling better." he said, smiling back at her smiling face, noticing her hair was now clean & straight, it was even darker than he thought it was.
"How are you, really?" he asked, much more seriously.
"I'm feeling...better, much better. I don't know how to explain it, but after seeing you I felt 30 thousand times better. If that makes any sense at all. And not as childish & silly as I think it is." she giggled and flushed red.
"Not childish, cute." he smiled, taking Emmet's spot in the chair.
"So...where's your foaming at the mouth brother?"
"I'm not sure. Emmet said humming or hutting. Not sure, haven't seen him since he meet you."
"Hunting? Do you mean hunting? Hunting for what Joce?" demanded Elliott.
"Maybe hunting. Stop screaming please, I'm not sure. Emmet said a few of the others were going hunting in the forest, something about boars or elk...some animal." she answered.
"So, you don't kill humans?"
"Are you crazy? Emmet would wring our necks if we did that!"
"Wow...I'm sorry. Still the stereo typical mortal, remember?"
"Yes, I know."
"Want to hear where Emmet sent me?"
"Sure."
"Okay, well, he took me to this woman, she looked a bit like him, she was tall & pretty, but that's so many people in this place. Then this woman took me to see "The Counsel". I was scared shitless. I peed my knickers...ugh, it was terrible. I was so...scared. I passed out when they tried to question me. Not a very brave brute, am I?"
"Not really, though I would have been terrified too."
"Well, now I don't feel so alone." he smiled, laughing along with her.
"Never feel alone! I am always somewhere near!"
"Good, because I'm not sure if I can stay here without you to keep me sane."
"Glad to help. Hmm, we act like we've known each other forever. Did I know you in the mortal world?"
"I doubt it, I spent my day in a stable & evenings in a bar. Oh, but not drinking in the bar, I play the very out of tune piano. And I sing, kind of. Not very well, but no one notices, most of the men in there are so plastered that they cannot remember the lyrics to the simplest songs."
"Sounds...erm...gay? Well, not really, sounds pathetic."
"It is, very. I dislike it, but I have to help my family out some how, don't I?"
"Family?"
"My little brother & mother. My dad died when I was little."
"That so sad."
"Not really, my dad was not the best, he got us money by stealing & selling. My dad wasn't one to work."
"Ah, my mother, well. It's a long story."
"I have time." he smiled, settling into the chair, ready for whatever story Joce had.
"My mother, she died two years ago. She had red fever. And my dad, well, he's after my money, my mother's money, she left it to Jerod & I. He wanted us to die in some "tragic accidental death". Yeah, like we would go down easily. My mother didn't raise a fool headed & hearted girl. She said I couldn't trust my father, I never have. Not really."
"Mmm, so you ran away?"
"Yeah, my brother & I took off about 2 weeks ago. Well, more like 4 weeks ago. We were running from Leslie & the pigs, as Jerod has playfully named them."
"Leslie? What kind of man's name is that?" she looked at him funny, cocking her head to the side.
"Who says Leslie is a real man?" they both began to have a laughing fit, turning red as the men in the bar where Elliott worked.
"Joce. I have to go." and with that, he was gone, leaving Joce with a bewildered look on her face.
...

Elliott sat on the bed he was given, thinking of only one thing. He was thinking of Jocelynn, & he knew he would never think of any one else ever again.
...

Emmet sat quietly at the edge of the bank. The lake was still, as if it was expecting him. He smiled at the water, seeing the dark lilac eyes shining back. He knew this was were he needed to be. He knew what he had to do now.
