Scarlet Roses [5]

Chapter 5:1

He sat quietly in a room filled with booze & drunken men. He sang to the tune the massive piano was spitting out, dreaming of another place, another group of people around him. In a room so full of people, he felt so far away & alone. He looks at the smiling men, who looked like shit & they smelled the same way. The old pub was just waiting to be blown down by a sudden gust of wind, the piano was old & out of tune, but it didn't matter to the men singing along to the song they don't remember anymore because they're just that plastered. He smiled at the thought, the people falling on the floor, standing up & laughing in a hoarse voice, while their friends laugh until their faces are swollen & red with laughter. The heavy weights sitting at the bar, drinking their 6th scotch, the trashy little girls sitting very closely to the greasy old men, whispering things that would make any straight man flush red. He sits there, wishing he could find the girl in his dreams, the one that he sees every night, the one that can make him happy & sad with one look, he wishes to find the girl he loves. He dreams every night of her midnight hair & thin body, her face like an angel but still like the devil. Her eyes sparkle & show much love for all around her. 2

"Elliott!" yelled Garrett, the manager of the pub.3

"Yes?" 4

"What are you doing? Stop day dreaming & play, these gentlemen are getting bored with nothing to sing along with."5

"Yes sir." he said, beginning to play the tired old folk songs they'd all learned at youth, sung by their mommas before bed. 6

"...&theol'anwaved'oodbyeeee.." roared the drunken men in the bar, distorted & no where near in tune, a group of singers to chase away the blues with their sweet whiskey lullabies. Tainted breath & yellowed eyes blurred with the alcohol coursing through their veins. The night dimmed out slowly, by 3 am, the place was nearly empty, the men stumbling home to their wives, a few to drop down on the sofa, a few to fight & beat their wives, a few to just sleep on the streets, curled up on the corner of a cobblestone street, or possibly in a barn for animals. He stood up from the rickety piano seat & began to walk home, he knew that the man roads would be full of thieves & drunken men from other bars still fighting with each other over who's apple was on the ground, but there wasn't an apple to be fought over, only a figment of their drunken minds. He sighed and began to walk down an empty alleyway, wanting to get home & dream about the girl he needed to meet to fill these empty, long days. As he walked, he noticed a hatch open, leading into the sewers, yet there was no stench coming from the opening. Curious, he walked over to it & looked down, surprised to see candles lit all the way down the length of the hall. Quietly, he climbed down the latter into the hall, making sure his shoes didn't snap when he walked. He slowly opened a door, which lead down another hall with two doors, he chose the one on the left, opening it & peering into it cautiously.7

"Hey boy, what are you doing here?"8

"I'm..uh...looking for the medical wing." he said in a panicked voice, saying the first thoughts in his mind.9

"Right this way kid, you must be the new one, that Jerod kid, right?"10

"Uhm...yeah. That's me, could you show me where it is?"11

"Yeah, just follow me kid."12

"Thanks."13

"Damn kid, spend much time around mortals today? You smell like shit, but then again oh so good."14

"Uhm, yes sir, you know how mortals are, crawling around like bumbling idiots up there."15

"Right you are kid." he said, leading him through a series of four doors, finally stopping at one that read medical aid.16

"Here you are, the medical wing. Go right in, someone will be there to help you."17

"Thank you," he said, wondering what he was going to do once inside. As he opened the door, the man was gone & he was greeted by the scent of clean floors & medications. He was greeted by a nurse, who looked at him & then hurried away to help another. He walked behind her down one of the long hall ways. Looking side to side, noticing one of the doors slightly opened. He looked into the room, noticing it was empty all except a small looking girl laying in the bed. He walked in slowly, looking down at the girl in the bed, her midnight black hair so matted & grungy she looked like her hair hadn't been washed in weeks. He smiled, she was so beautiful in her mess. Her wounds gushed with beauty, her bruises were prettier than diamonds, she was magnificent. She was sleeping so peacefully, but with pain painted across her face. She was fighting something he couldn't see. 18

"Hey! What the hell are you doing in here?" surprised, he spun on his heals to see a fire eyed young man. 19

"I'm...uh...just leaving."20

"Rightfully so."21

"Who is she?"22

"She is sick, now leave." he commanded.23

"Who are you to kick me out?"24

"I'm Emmet, & I highly doubt her brother would want a mortal looking longly at his sister."25

"Who are you to call me anything? You're mortal too!" at that Emmet laughed.26

"What's so damn funny?"27

"I'm not mortal, her brother's not mortal, she's only part mortal, now leave."28

"What are you?"29

"That's not leaving!"30

"What are you?!"31

"I'm that demon that haunts your nightmares."32

"I only dream of her." he said gesturing towards Jocelynn.33

"Stop dreaming of her, leave now before her brother comes back, he's got one hell of a temper & will kill you without thought."34

"No."35

"Very well, your funeral. Now, before you die, who are you?"36

"I'm Elliott."37

"Hmm, well, I am Emmet, as I told you before, & I am a vampyre, but I bet you didn't know that we even exist."38

"No, I didn't, I only have heard of those absurd hunts for vampires & witches."39

"Those hunts are pointless, we don't kill people, at least, I don't. Neither does my mother & Jerod & Jocelynn won't kill people either. I can't speak for witches."40

"Hmm...is Jocelynn the girl?"41

"Who wants to know?" roared an angry voice behind them.42

"This little mortal does, Jer. He's keen for your sister."43

"Who are you? Speak mortal!"44

"I'm Elliott, who the hell are you though?"45

"Her brother, now, leave before I rip you to shreds!"46

"Jerod?" whispered Joce in a low voice.47

"Yes Jocie, I'm here, it's okay." he said, dropping his angry voice to a low, caring one.48

"Jer, Jer who is that?"49

"That guy? I'm not even sure."50

"Who are you?" she asked, turning her eyes to Elliott.51

"I'm Elliott."52

"Hi Elliott, I'm Jocelynn. What are you doing here?"53

"I'm...I'm not sure Jocelynn. Something drew me here."54

"Interesting." she said.55

"Jocelynn, you need rest." whispered Jer in a worried voice.56

"Goodbye Jocelynn, maybe I'll see you again one day." waved Elliott as Emmet pushed him out of the door.57

"Goodbye Elliott." she whispered before falling asleep. He smiled, really hoping he could one day come back to her.
