Scarlet Roses [Preface]

Preface:1

A young man stares down at the freshly turned earth, crying & yelling obscenities & what if's. It's 1736 & it is all but well. The date is September 17th, and a young man was laid to rest, put into the ground, never to return from where ever the hell he was now.2

"He was a good boy, that one was." says the minster behind him.3

"Yes, he certainly was." 4

"He was a good friend of yours, boy?"5

"Yes sir, the best friend a boy could ask for."6

"Well, we'll all miss him. Now come along child, it'll be raining soon & your mother would certainly scold you if you got your clothing disheveled."7

"Yes sir." he said in a small, low voice as he followed obediently behind the minister into the home of the boy's family. Upon entrance, he was greeted by Esme, who's face was gripped with remorse, but held a plastered smile, as if to show Emmet it was going to be alright in the end.8

"We're all going to miss him Emmet, not just you. Everyone in this room loves him & cares about him."9

"What about you, why do you care about him?"10

"I care about you, you care about him. Something you care about is something I care about. Emmet, I know I'm not your mother, but if it means anything to you, I love you like a son, & I hate to see you like this." she said into his ear as he sobbed into her shoulder, leaving streaks of pain down her face & his.11

"All will be well," she whispered, beginning to sing a tired old song as the hours folded into the days, which folded into months & years.
