Chapter 4:1

Esme recited the lyrics to some forlorn old song, looking down at the face of a beautiful creature, listening whispered words of worry, not realizing a good bit of it was coming from her. She tried to hold the crying boy in her arms, tried to tell him it was going to be alright. She was trying to sing away his tears, her eyes trying to suck the pain out of his soul. There was nothing she could do. Esme was so powerless at that moment, so fearful of what was happening to the man she loved like a son, who was weeping into her shoulder like a crying baby. She was so sick of having him be in pain, how much the memories would hurt him, forever, never going to be able to escape it was so heartbreaking. She hated the fact he would live forever, only to be haunted by his death. She didn't believe it was fair he would live eternally, only to have to dream about his death every single day, she'd pray that he wouldn't have to have those waking nightmares that made him scream so much, she prayed he'd be safe.2

"Esme," whispered Emmet as he pulled her into a tight hug.3

"Emmet," she whispered back, letting tears roll down her cheeks as she hugged her son for the first time in over 20 years, letting every emotion that had swallowed her up for years pour out.4

"Esme, I missed you so much, I hated leaving you, honestly. Esme, I'm so sorry I left..." he said, not releasing her from the hug.5

"Emmet, it doesn't matter anymore, you're home...I missed you so much. Please tell me you are here to stay."6

"I am, I'm not going anywhere, I have some friends I want you to meet."7

"Friends? Show me where Emmet."8

"Esme, I didn't kill a mortal or anything, I wouldn't go back on that lesson. I wouldn't feast upon a mortal with so many boars still running around like the fucking animals they are."9

"Emmet, watch your mouth. Now, where are they? I'm curious to know where you found more of us."10

"That's the thing...I kind of made them like us."11

"Emmet! You know you aren't supposed to do that!"12

"Come, & stop scolding me, Dr. Lawrence already laid into me about it."13

"He did it rightfully so." she said as he pulled her towards the medical wing. He stopped at the 7th door, opening it and showing her into a small room, filled with medications & a stomach churning scent of anti-septics on the floors. 14

"Hi Emmet." said Jer in a low voice, as if to not disturb Joce, even though she was awake & hiding her pain in a smile towards Emmet & Esme.15

"Emmet! Hi!" said Jocelynn in a forcefully happy voice.16

"Hello Jer, hello Joce."17

"Who's the woman with you?"18

"The woman with me is Esme, she is like my mother,  she's always been there for me."19

"Hello Jerod, hello Jocelynn."20

"How do you know our names?" questioned Jerod.21

"I know things, I can read everything about you with one look."22

"Oh Yeah? Well, give me something no one knows."23

"Your name is Jerod Lewis Houghton, you where born February 26, 1841 & you are 15 years old, soon to be 16, or rather, would soon be 16 if you hadn't been turned. And your sister, her name is Jocelynn Anne Houghton, born November 8, 1839. Her birthday would be in less that a month."24

"Wow...that was...dead on."25

"Hmm, yes, I never get things wrong."26

"Well, except when it comes to me, she never knows what I'm going to do."27

"That's true, I can never tell what you're going to ever do. You some how block me out." she smiled and pulled her arms around her much missed son.28

"Esme, I missed you too."29

"I hoped you might. So, why is Jocelynn not changing like she is supposed to?"30

"That's the problem, we don't know, and we're worried it might...wipe us out."31

"How can that be? It would have to rip our insides to shreds."32

"I think it might be, Jocelynn is still part human though, until we find out what's blocking her fully, we aren't safe, but this mustn't get out."33

"Understood."34

"Esme, do you think you can find out what's wrong with her?"35

"I can try, I'm not sure if I will get through. I've never tried anything like that.36

"Please try Esme, please..." pleaded a hurting Jocelynn, ignoring the false happiness she had on moments before.37

"Very well." she said, looking deep into her eyes, trying to pull the pain she was feeling out of her soul's deepest depths.
