I look at the unshaven stubble on his face as he divulges into a Big Mac in the front seat of my car. “What?”, he says as the special sauce drips from the corner of his lips. I glance out my window into the parking lot where my car is. The stock boy from Winners cleares what is left of the shopping carts from the desolate lot. “Do you love me?”, I say as I sip my iced tea. “Of course I do. You’re amazing.”, he replies. He kisses me. “Now, let’s go and get sundaes. They are two for two dollars right?”, he asks as he fishes in his wallet for spare change. 1
After pulling up to the McDonalds intercom the employee tells us that the fudge machine isn’t working. So we leave and I drive him to another McDonalds location. His directions are pittifull so I end up driving all across the city. I’ve got work the next morning and it’s close to 12:30 am. I’m frustrated and I can’t see straight out of my front winshield. It’s spotted with dirt from driving on the highway to see him every other day. I don’t have any money to buy winshield fluid and no time to wash it at the gas station. I spend all my time on him. 2
I don’t regret one moment of it. He is the one who made me laugh during troublesome times. The one who helped me with my homework and the occasional assignment. He sang to me on the phone late at night when I called him because I’d had a bad dream. He was there for me through it all. Five whole years we stuck by eachother. Five whole years we became significantly stranded together. 3
As I peered through the spotted glass I was diverted and lost concentration of what was around me. “The curb!” he yelled “What the fuck are you doing?”. The car came to a jolt and I just sat there with a puzzled look on my face. “Steph! You know what? I’m sick of this shit. You never watch where you’re going and you never listen to me. That’s it, I’m going home!”. So I drove him home. The ride seemed longer than usual as we both looked straight ahead. The radio was playing but the music seemed to be faint and distant. As we pulled up near his house he muttered a soft “goodnight” and slammed the door behind him. 4
I managed to get through an hour of highway traffic before I stepped in the side door at my house. I logged into my messenger, as usual and decided not to send him anything. He was probably mad and I’d be a bother so I went to do some University reading. 5
Ten minutes later I heard an alert which indicated that I received a message. “I’m not coming this Saturday”, it said. Saturday was my eighteenth birthday and I had invited him to dinner to meet my friends for the first time. Our relationship was at it’s peak now and we decided it was time to introduce eachother in a respectable manner. “Why not?”, I replied. "What would you do if I cheated on you", he said. "I'd be really hurt. Why? did you cheat on me or something?", I replied. "No", he quickly wrote back. "Well, how would you feel if I cheated on you", I rebutted. "I'd feel that I finally had a reason to leave you. I don’t want a girlfriend. Can we just be friends?”, he wrote. I was sitting there, stunned, and in total awe. “I’m sorry”, he added. So I called him to inquire about this sudden break up. He told me not to bother him but I continued to ask what I did that made him feel this way. He insisted that it wasn’t anything I did. 6
So now I’m waiting to see how five years of something will end, or if it won’t end… I sent him a text message. It read: “I guess I’m not that ‘amazing’ am I?” I’m sitting here and I’m deciding what I should do. I’m ready to give up.7

very true, I guess I meant to say "devour". When I wrote this I was very depressed and didn't care much. Thank you for reading and offering comments and constructive criticism!

You obviously have a great capacity to love the unlovable. You did a good job of showing us your boyfriend's sloppier side. The story could really use a spell check. Also divulges isn't the right word for eating a hamburger

Good write... Um... Er... Uh... Sorry things are the way they are.

This has been a very touching piece. I'm sorry he left you like that. But like they say... If you love something let it go if it comes back it's yours. If not then It was not meant to be. Take care and keep your head up. Good luck in the contest

Oh God...that's awful! I'm so sorry that happened to you, but you wrote about it beautifully...and I sure as hell know where you're coming from. My ex lives in Chicago, but I'm going to school in Atlanta, so I rarely got to see him. Last weekend, we had agreed to meet at a concert, and when I got there, he had this girl with him, and he introduced her as his new g/f. I was like, gee, thanks for telling me! It was a total waste of airfare ($183!) and I couldn't even enjoy the concert...so I understand how you're feeling right now! I'm already sorta dating a new guy, but I still feel so used. But I hope things get better for you, too!
XOXOXO,

I'd say yes, since the contest says it has to be based of truth...but you just commented on the piece and didn't see the contest so it's cool
Good write here, I must say that I have looked at my current boyfriend of 4 years in November the same way...This made me think of our relationship now. I'm going to go begin writing for this contest, good job and good luck
