The Bad Candy

The Bad Candy
By Ayesha Raees

And there he lay, in the pool of his dark sorrows, musing over and just throwing it away.

He let out a tired relaxing breath as he relaxed his muscles against the dirty, broken wall but to him, his surroundings did not matter. He thought he was lying in a hot spring, having a day of his life. To him, the thousand of packets, bottles and plastic injections that lay next to him in a breathtaking humungous pile represented chocolates, sweets and colorful toys as to a child. The clothes he wore were torn and dirty but to him, represented a golden robe. His eyes were open whereas his mind was asleep.

He had no idea for how long he had been sitting there, in a corner of a broken alley with garbage cans all around him. It was almost dawn and he had spend almost the whole night, enjoying himself with his make believe candies and the relaxing hot spring.

He stretched out his hands wearily and picked up the box. He ripped it open in glee and then crumbled the plastic sheet inside it as a child would do to a candy wrapper. He took out small plastic bottle with a liquid in it that he had no knowledge of except of that it would make him better… in some way. He stretched out his other hands towards the shoelace and the injection that lay on the humungous pile. Tying the shoelace on his upper arm with surprising speed, his hunger grew as he hold the trembling injecting and inserted it in the bottle of liquid. He waited impatiently as he forced the injection to consume the liquid before he at last looked at it in wonder, his heart throbbing loudly for more and his mind suddenly screaming to insert it in his veins.

And before he could do anything, the sun suddenly lightened the sky, almost blinding him as his beloved candy slipped from his fingers. He moaned in frustration as he looked around for his precious sweet that his heart yearned for. It was his crave, without it he would die. It was his addiction, he should never lose it.

Shuffling around his clothes he spotted the injection and picked it up in hurry before looking around frantically as somebody will come and grab it away from him. Like a mother would do if a child will have too much candies.

Sighing in relief, he inserted his sweet in his skin and sighed again as it spread through his body, making it numb. His heart relaxed and his mind quiet down. He looked towards the sky and watched the early birds fly before he forced himself up from his positions and his hands on the dirty wall for support made his way out of the alley, towards his home. He stopped and looked back at the alley before slowly smiling. But he would back the next night, with his bag full of treats and then he would sit against the wall, eating away his chocolates, sweets and playing away with his colorful toys.

Miss Alexandra Brook gathered her books and papers from the reception desk before signing a few documents, she sighed as she pushed away some of her red colored bangs from her blue eyes as she looked around at the scarcely filled corridors. She straightened her white overall, her eyes still glued at her follow nurses and doctors that hurried away here and there, their minds lost in their own thoughts.

“Doctor Brook?”

The red head turned her head towards her assistant that was standing a few feet away from her and was holding a few papers.

“Yes Samantha?”

Samantha smiled a little as she gave the papers to the doctor.

“The physiatrists have solved the problem with Mr. Bark,”

“And what do they say?”

Samantha ran her hand through her brown hair as she tried to remember.

“They say that Mr. Bark had taken the drugs because of some family and school issues. His father died when he was eight and his mother brought him up. Last year, when he was a freshman in high school, his mother unexpectedly married another man who was very mean to him. Then his girlfriend dumped him because of his family issues when he tired to find comfort in her. Because of lack of food that he had to skip because of his father sending him away to his room frequently, made him weak and he was kicked out of the basketball team. His friends abandoned him and his grades began to fall,”

Doctor Brook sighed loudly as she put down her clipboard and covered her face with her hands as pictures formed in her mind.

“Doctor Brook? Are you alright?” Samantha asked suddenly taken aback by her doctor’s actions.

The doctor removed her hands from her slightly paled face.

“Poor guy, he is so young. I wish he could survive,”

She picked up her clipboard and started walking towards a specific room, Samantha behind her.

“He only have one week to survive because he doesn’t have any will to live,” she said and looked at her doctor in charge. Her face even more paled but she didn’t say anything. She stopped in front of a specific room and sighed yet again before opening the door and walking in.

She smiled slowly at the young man lying on the white bed who didn’t even look at her as she entered.

“Mr. Bark, how are you feeling today?”

The young man looked at her in a bored expression and wearily raised his eye brows.

“I have been better, thank you,” he replied in a weak voice.

Mr. Brook smiled warmly at him before opening the drawer and picking up a bottle of pills. Mr. Brook noticed his sudden gaze at the bottle but tired to ignore it.

“You need to take your medicine Mr. Bark,”

The young boy looked at the bottle in wonder and blinked dumbly at it, as memories spread through his mind. He shook his head slowly as he rested his head back on the pillow.

“You are wrong Doctor,”

Doctor Brook’s eyes opened wide in shock and wonder as she looked at Samantha in surprise that just looked at her, shrugging. It was miracle for a person in his state to think and then oppose.

“Pardon me?”

The young man shook his head again.

“That’s not medicine, that’s candy… its bad for the health,”

Surprised at his childish answer and slightly taken aback that it held a lot of meaning, she determinedly looked at him, wanting to change his mind.

“But you took the bad candy. This one is the good one,”

The young man looked at her.

“They said the same thing too,” he said before shifting his gaze towards the ceiling.

Not knowing what to do, Doctor Brook put the bottle of pills on the side table and walked out of the room without another word, Samantha’s previous words echoing in her mind.

“He only have one week to survive because he doesn’t have any will to live,”

Doctor Brook made her way towards the reception again, her head aching slightly, Samantha following her in silence.

He watched them leave, just the same way that his beloved left; without a word or a caring glance but their eyes full of pity. He looked at the candy at the side table, his heart was dead and he no longer yearned for it. His mind was silent waiting to be shut down for ever. He shook his head and looked the ceiling, his new companion. They both shared no meaning, action or life. The only difference was that the ceiling had a purpose whereas he did not.

And there he lay, in the pool of his dark sorrows, musing over and just throwing it away.

I was confused by the title and then the drugs... but it all formed together nicely. Your story was great, and it molded together like play doh.

    I loved it! Great job

    Awesome

It WAS awesome, but you ended almost all quotations with commas when they weren't needed. It was an awesome story...And I craved more, like the bad candy.
I liked the beginning where you said the boy's heart yearned for it and if he didn't have it he would die.
Awesome job and good luck in my contest.

    Interesting start

I can't say I agree with the self pity point of view of the main character and the lame excuses the doctors gave him for his addiction. Some of the sentences don't flow quite right. Nice try, keep going.

All in all I liked this. Though not what I had really been expecting, I thought this was really good the way his mind regressed to a child's state. Very good in the metaphorical sense too. Good luck!
