The Secret Vampire Part III

Despite the many suggestions to take time off, Abby returned to school and tried to get on with her normal life. Still, the thoughts of what had happened between her and Cassius filled her mind like a whirlpool, spinning round and round drowning anything else that crossed it. 1

She had become the main focus of discussion at school. Everyone either feeling pity for her or suspecting her of being the real vampire. 2

Abby kept replaying the newspaper articles and news shows over and over in her head. Cassius was found dead not three hours after she had left. His blood had been taken, but through a pre-existing cut. 3

Abby was stressed and tired. The police had been talking to her to the wee morning hours and getting nowhere. She kept repeating that she had no idea how it happened. She didn’t see anyone near or around the house (although she hadn’t really looked) and she herself was not involved. She didn’t tell anyone about the night’s earlier events. She thought it was best for Cassius to rest in peace. Abby couldn’t help but guilt herself into thinking it was her fault. Did he do it to himself? Did she drive him to it? Why didn’t she believe him? In all the years they had been dating, not once had he ever lied to her. So, why accuse him now? 4

By the end of the day, she had completely shut herself out from the world. When she got home, she didn’t say a word to anyone. 5

“Best to leave her be,” her mother had said. To be honest, her parents were rather relived to have Cassius out of their lives. 6

Abby went straight up to her room and felt it best to remain there for the rest of the night. Her room was quite a sight. The walls were papered with warm pinks and blues, like that of a sunset. Her walls opened onto a veranda that overlooked the edge of town. Abby opened the windows and stood outside, watching the sun leave its majesty for the night to devour. All was quiet in her world and for a moment, Abby felt a peace she hadn’t felt in weeks. A small but content smile crossed her face. Nothing would ever come between her and happiness again. Abby felt a slight chill and turned back into her room. She took out a scrap book of pictures of her and Liana and flipped through it. Pictures of their Guide camps, first days of school, various parties and Halloweens. They all brought back such wonderful memories. 7

Oh how Abby wished Liana was still alive.8

A noise.9

Abby turned to the terrace and saw a figure with fluorescent eyes staring back at her.10

Abby backed away, but the figure calmly entered and turned on Abby’s bedside lamp. It was Liana. Abby’s breath left her as she tried to find an escape. 11

The pale being stood between her and the door. Liana, flawless and pale crept closer and closer to Abby until they were almost nose to nose. 12

A final breath echoed out of Abby.13

“You’re the vampire?” Liana smiled revealing two small, pointed teeth.14

“Yeah, but don’t tell anybody.”15
