Only in the Shadow's Darkness (Chp 10)

I stepped closer to Frost, pushing into him until our arms were touching. I could feel his body tightening from that lone touch, and I knew that what he saw was bad. I had five. How many did he have?

"What you got?" I whispered to him.

"Seven. You?"

"Five."

I felt his body twitch. Not a full blown spasm, but a little twitch, either out of his muscles being tense, or nervousness. I took a deep breath, and kept focus on the five vampires I had slowly approaching me. It didn't take me long to recognize the one that just so happened to be the closest to me. It was the guy that shot at us that day I ran from the house. In the darkness, he looked more threatening. Darker, dangerous. I couldn't tell if he had his gun on him this time. I'm sure if he did, we were in trouble.

I glanced over at the other four on my side, and found them all to be dressed the same. All in black. Black paints and some form of black shirt. The trigger happy guy had a tight black shirt that once had sleeves before he tore them off. He had a skull cap covering whatever hair he had. All black, as if he were about to rob a store. The one next to him had a black Ac/Dc shirt on and long black hair, pulled back into a ponytail. With the little moonlight we received, I could see a scar slashing down his right cheek, almost from his eye to his chin. The last two were dressed alike, spiked dark hair that looked black, but was hard to tell with the lighting. They both had long jackets on and a peircing in their left eyebrow. They both looked exactly alike. Twin brothers, both vampires. Kind of sad.

I took a deep breath and risked taking a glance at Frost. His face was blank, except for a smile that had creeped along his lips. He watched his approaching group and seemed pleased. I felt his body move, but it was a quick movement. It was like I blinked, and when I saw him again his katana was in his hands. He let out a growl as his demon came out and he charged towards his gang. I highly regretted bringing a better weapon, but there was no sence in whining now. Trigger happy was charging me, and I had to think fast.

I did what anyone would do. I tuck and rolled. As I dove out of his way, I caught a glimpse of the others coming. I scanned around me fast and found a vase with a dead rose on it placed next to a gravestone. As much as I didn't want to take it, I did as I jumped to my feet. I smashed it over one of the twins heads and he stumbled. I took that opprotunity to kick him in the head, and he fell to the ground. I turned and found Ac/Dc coming next, with a baseball bat. He came swinging and got a good hit at my arm. Pain shot down my left arm and it went numb. I cried out in pain, but kept my focus and caught his legs out from under him. When he fell to the ground, I kicked his arms until he loosened his grip on the bat. I kicked it aside for the moment, kicked him hard in the face, then fell onto him, stradling his body. I took the stake and stabbed him dead in the chest. He yelled out into the night one last time, before crumbling underneath me.

The bat. I went to stand up, but I felt the wind of something coming at me fast. Before I even had the chance to duck, the bat smacked into my back, sending me straight to the ground. I cried out and for a moment, I couldn't move. I coughed, finding it hard to breathe. ROLL OVER, I said to myself, and used anything I had in me to do that. I looked up and found the twins looming over me, one with the bat held up, ready to strike. He swung down at me again and nailed me hard in the side. The blow caused me to roll over onto my side, coughing. I let out a yell as I kicked my foot out, catching one of them in the leg. It was a hopeful attempt, and it worked. I looked back to the twins and kicked out again, hitting him in the knee just right. I heard the joint pop and saw the leg bend back. He fell to the ground, screaming out in pain.

Suddenly, I heard a laugh from behind me, and then the sound of a bullet going into chamber. I froze. The twin holding the bat froze. The one obn the ground still yelled in pain. Call it a hunch, but they must have been newbies to be hurt this easily.

"Nice kicking, girlie." The voice was deep, like that of a wrestler. I knew instantly who it was. Rok. His revenge at last.

I turned my head to look at him, wincing from the bruises on my back and side. And there he was, Rok, leaning up against a taller gravestone, gun pointed directly at my head. He was a fairly small guy, body wise. Sure, being a vampire will allow him to bench press cars, but his voice always made him seem like he'd be some big buff guy,and he wasn't. He had a small, athletic body. Long brown hair hung losely just past his shoulders, some of it hanging in front of his eyes. I wondered how good his line of sight is when his hair was like that, but then again, at this range he could still blow my head off. He wore a dark red sliky button down shirt and black leather pants. Seemed almost like he was trying too hard to play the part of the big bad vampire.

I looked past his gun and straight into his eyes. My heart was beating faster, with the gun pointed at me, and I knew he knew, so their was no point in showing him how scared I was.

"Get up." He said, flicking the gun up in a fast movement as if I didn't understand what he said.

I took a deep breath and placed my right arm on the nearest gravestone. My left arm was just getting back its feeling, but it was all tingly and I knew it won't be much use at the moment. I slowly pulled myself to my feet, my body aching from the short bat beating. That's when I finally saw Frost since this started. But to my disappointment, he was on his knees, bleeding. His sword was gone and three guys, two vampires and Trigger Happy, were holding him down. Frost lifted his head up and looked over to me. Mostly, I saw anger flare behind his eyes, but when he saw me, a hint of sorrow crossed his face.

With the three holding him, and the three I had left (including the wounded twin ) I'd realized we reduced the gang by half. Frost with five kills, myself with one. Hey, I'm only human! Not bad for an ambush.

"What do you want, Rok?" He chuclked and put up his gun.

"Revenge, bitch." As he said it, the two vampires nearest to me grabbed my arms. Rok took a quick swing and hit me right in the gut. I let my knees give way, but the two vampires held me up. Frost's face tightened with anger and I saw him try to pull free of the three vampires.

"Aww, how cute." Rok said with a disgusted tone, looking at Frost then back to me. He took the bat from where the one twin had dropped it when he grabbed me. Rok twirled the slugger in hands and walked over to Frost.

"Care to take some of the pain?" He asked, and he swung wide and hard, cracking Frost right in the head. His body went limp for a moment and his head drooped down. I saw blood fall from his lips as his head just sort of rolled back and forth. Rok swung again, hitting him in the chest. The three that had been holding him let him go and he fell to the ground, coughing up blood onto the soil.

"Frost!" I said, and struggled to get lose. "Leave him alone, you bastard!" When I said that, I wished I didn't. Rok turned to me, eyes flared. He croutched before me, our eyes at level.

"It's eye for an eye, Morena. And you know damn well what I'd like to do to you."

"Then just do it. Frost had nothing to do with the death of your weak, poor excuse for a brother-" His hand slapped hard across my face, sending my head to the side so hard my neck cracked. I tasted blood, but waited until I faced him again to spit it at him. Of course, that didn't win me many points either, and Rok took another swing at me, complete with a punch to the gut and a knee to the face.

I collapsed in the arms of the two vampires that held me, my vision blurred and the world spinning. I heard nothing but the beating of my own heart and the blood rushing through my veins. My head bobbed a bit. It was hard to keep everything steady. But this was what it felt like? To be on the verge of unconsciencness? I new if I closed my eyes, I might not wake up, so I did my best to not let the pain take over and bring forth that longing for sleep but it was hard. Finally, the vamps that held me let me go and I landed on the ground with a thud, unable to move. My vision slowly started to return to focus, and I caught a glimps of Frost. He was looking dead at me, his expression now full of more anger then ever. His eyes, once a blue-green color, slowly seemed to fill with red leaving the blackness of the pupil as the only other color. He quickly jumped to his feet and lunged at the one closest to him, Trigger Happy. The man screamed out as Frost tore into his neck, killing him. The other vampires encirlced him fast, minus Rok, who stayed near me, watching Frost tear apart his gang. Screams of them each dying by the hands of Frost filled the night. My eyes no longer wanted to watch. I looked away, and felt my eyes beginning to flutter shut.

NO, I said to myself. STAY AWAKE. I focused on Rok, a little over five feet away from me, hopelessly watching his men die. There it was, his gun, tucked down the small of his back into his pants. If only I could get it...

They say that when one is in an extraordinary situation, they tend to do extraordinary things. Now, I knew that standing was going to be a terrible task for me to even attempt, but it was worth the shot. I gathered up all my strenght and tried to prop myself up. But my arms gave way. I fell back to the ground, and let out a breath of air.

I needed a weapon. Something.

Then, I located it. The bat. No longer was it in his hands. It layed peaceful on the ground beside Rok's feet. I inched my way towards him slowly, arm outstretched. I grabbed the bat and with my one good arm, I swung hard at his legs. Rok fell to the ground. He looked at me, surprised I had the strength to swing a bat. I flung my arm back and swung again, hitting him smack dead in the neck. A faint crack was heard, and I watched as Rok fell to the ground, struggling for air. The swing had crushed his windpipe. Normally, for a human, that was a fatal blow. But for a vampire, I just wasn't sure. And with Rok, I wanted to be sure. I grabbed the stake and squeezed it firmly in my palm. His eyes grew wide and he screamed out.

Suddenly, I huge wave of energy shot through me, sending me flat on my back. I was stuck, facing the stars with the wind knocked out of me. Rok was back on his feet, looming over me. He held his hand around his neck as if he wanted to choke himself, using his other arm to help him lean on a grave stone. His eyes were dark and I could tell he was pissed.

"This isn't over." He hissed. His voice sounded like that of one who spent most of their life smoking. I wanted to smirk at the damage I'd done, but I thought better of it.

And with that, Rok seemed to just disappear into the night.

I didn't even try to get up from where I was laying. My body hurt and was refusing even the thought ot it. No more threats meant no more adrenaline. I glanced up and found Frost coming towards me, his shirt covered in blood. His eyes were once again normal.

He knealt beside me, wiping the blood from his lips.

"Good fight?" He asked, and he stroked a stray piece of hair from my face.

"Remind me to always bring weapons." I whispered. My chest hurt when I spoke, heck even when I breathed.

"Can you get up?" I shook my head. Maybe if I really tried, I could stand up, but I was still just a mere human, and baseball bats hurt.

Frost got into a crouching stance and gently scooped me up in his arms. I wrapped my arms around his neck and allowed him to carry me out of the graveyard. Sure, we were both going to be stained in blood now, but to be honest, I didn't care. I just wanted to go back to bed.
