Interview with the proverbial......

"In my opinion, the whole of the human race are vampires. I mean, look at it logically. From the moment of your conception do you not leech from the very life-blood of your own mother? And when born, you still deem to take milk from her. I can see from your raised eyebrow that you do not entirely agree, and that you also question the validity of an opinion from a total stranger. Maybe I should introduce myself.........

I am ages old, and I exist in all of you. I was neither born nor created.... I just was. I lived for a while in Eden. Yes, Eden, the Biblical garden of paradise. It was good for a while. People were happy, content, and I fed from their joy. But then I learnt a great lesson, one that has served me well over the aeons. I began to realise that the human species on a whole is never happy. You can give them paradise and yet they will still crave more. You remember the tale of the snake and the apple, tempting Eve to her downfall? Well, the snake was me. I noticed this inherent dissatisfaction within your kind, and took advantage of it. Thus, Eve took the temptation and singlehandedly destroyed the chance of you all living in paradise. Great for me, not so good for you I suppose.

You see, I feed from your emotions. It doesn't matter which one, they all taste as good as each other. I tried to sustain myself on the good ones at first, when in Eden. I drank of their joy and feasted on their contentedness. But then that funny little thing called human nature took over, and opened my eyes to so many more possibilities. So many more easily acheived nourishments. Eve was an experiment of kinds I suppose. Just to see what would happen...... And I was pleasantly surprised with the results. That greed tasted so much more fulfilling than happiness. And it was so much easier to manifest.

My next big experiment, if you like, was Carthage. Oh, how good that insane jealousy and greed felt to sink my teeth into! Metaphorically speaking, of course. I dont actually have physical teeth, to speak of. But nevertheless......

It was easy after that, to be honest. Greed gives birth to more greed. Likewise with hate and jealousy. And lust, and sloth, and every other Sin you can think of. They are so much more contagious than any virtue I have come across. I never realised quite how deplorable the human race were though, until the Crusades. What an awful display of everything vile they were. And how very delicious for me!

Now, stop trying to look directly at me. It wont work. I will stay no more than a shadow, no matter how much you squint and peer in my direction. Turn your head to one side, and just view me from that angle. At a distance I look almost human, dont I? That's because I'm getting stronger. With each war you fight, with every drop of blood spilled on a battlefield, I grow. Even the petty things; a small child stealing a lollypop, a woman gazing upon her husband's mistress with a jealous rage.... they all give me strength. And your species has such a wonderful dark side to it's nature..... I have never been so well fed!

For every 'sinfull' act, you loose a part of yourself. I take it from you, use it to become stronger, to assume your own form. Floating around as barely more than static energy becomes a little stale after several millenia, you understand. I want to walk around on two legs for a while. Think carefully, back to your old childhood history lessons. Do you recall any truly deplorable humans becoming sucessful, and leading long, happy lives? Of course not. And I shall tell you the reason why. I ate them, effectively. With every disgraceful thing they did in their miserable little existences, I consumed a part of their very essence, their lifes energy. You can only loose so much of that before you start to wither away.

I can see now that you are starting to believe me.....and I notice you are trembling. How very convenient. Fear just happens to be my favourite..............."

Excellently written and kept me reading!

I personally don't write 'horror/vampire' stories, but I do love to read them! Love the way its just one character talking, it never wanders from the plot and keeps at it.

    Great work!

Wow, hmm, soon the snake will become fat and burst up, because humans will never stop doing bad things to each other, and will never stop having dark thoughts.
I guess by the snake you meant evil.
    Very well written.. Good job!

oooohhhhh, it's all philosophical. Evil's very nature compells it to spread its influence and corrupt all that it touches. But this evil FEEDS off of the horrible inhumanity that it touches. Thus evil contains the seeds of its own destruction.

Good job with this. It made me think. What a peculiar sensation. :-D

How very sinister- and how very enjoyable. This was exactly the sort of thing I was looking for in this contest- a new take on an old, old story. Very well done!
