Blood

“Maven…..I turned you into a vampire so that you could live…Now you’re rejecting blood. What’s wrong with you?” Morrison asked “You can drink now and live a bit longer or you can refuse again and again until you become deathly ill.”

“It’s like cannibalism……I’m not a cannibal.” Maven said with a disgruntled look as he stared at the sleeping lady.

“It’s only cannibalism if it’s your own kind. You aren’t human anymore” Think of them as……freezies, sweet and tangy.” The vampire laughed “Please I don’t want you getting ill.”

Maven leaned to an incision on the girl’s leg. As he lowered his head about to drink he shut his eyes and stood again. “I can’t Morrison. I need more time, maybe another week?”

Morrison looked at him with a worried expression “Fine. But you must drink. If you refrain again I will hold you down and force you to drink. I won’t care if you cry and I won’t care if you faint you will have to drink.” With that, the vampires jumped out the window onto the ground and walk briskly up the street during the dark quiet of the witching hour.

----------------------------------------------------------------

The two walked for an hour until they found a dark abandoned house it was close to dawn so they had to get in. Smashing a window, Morrison climbed through the gap. Maven jumped right in after the blue haired vampire.

Maven wanted to sleep but couldn’t, the thought of drinking from a human maybe him sick. He didn’t want to become a vampire, but he guessed Morisot thought he should live.

Maven had been hit by a car late at night a week before present the impact sent him sprawling down a large, jagged rock covered hill into a slow running river. “You on the verge of death” Morrison told him. ”I saw what happened; I had been watching you and knew you were a good boy, you didn’t deserve to die, not like that.”

Maven watched the vampire sleep soundly on the old bed. Maven thanked the vampire for letting him live but also hated him for taking him away from his life. Maybe he could have pulled through maybe he could have lived but he would never know because he had been given an amazing curse.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The vampire awoke and the two set out.

“Morrison” Maven said glumly. “I think I’m going to try and feed. It won’t be easy.”

Morrison looked at him amazed “Why the sudden change of heart?”

“You gave me this gift that is a curse but I don’t want to waste it.”
“So be it. We will get to the next town by three in the morning and we will find you an elder to drink from.” Morrison told him.

“It’s….horrible…but good…Do you feel this way about blood” Maven asked

“I do. It’s a bad thing but it lets us live…..It’s a disgustingly beautiful thing. We drink, we live. We refuse, we die. It’s as simple as that.” Morrison replied

Maven drank deep but stopped him self.

Maven came to terms with what he was. He didn’t like it much, it was deplorable. But to live he would have to.

    lol, wow.
Great job Kaitlin... this really reminds me of Darren Shan and gives me a craving for blood. Okay, not really, but it does give me a craving to go read his books. Good luck.

I really liked this...the whole idea of taking a chance to protect oneself from death. In fiction, vampires live on what we live on...just in a different way...great way of showing a reader this message! You could have added a bit more description of the characters, otherwise...it was really good. I wish you luck in the contest!
