Lydia’s shoes scuffled on the sidewalk. The wind brought a chill, which made her shudder and tighten her scarf around her pale neck. Her house was about a few blocks away from school, and she wasn’t so thrilled about what happened today.
How, HOW, could Jason do this, she thought. Lydia had a feeling it was coming; the fact that her own best friend would turn against her someday. She had that feeling lately. Jason had been drifting apart from her these days, and not once in their time of friendship had they ever fought. Not once, and she hoped not ever.
Too late. As she recalled, early in the morning, on the school grounds, she saw around five guys hanging around the far back fence. Lydia was about to just walk on and ignore them. If she had done that, she and Jason would still be friends--even if Lydia was clueless about the fact that Jason would be keeping an ugly secret from her.
But, Lydia did not walk on. She had caught sight of Jason’s bright blue blazer among the group of guys. She thought she would go up to him and tell him hi, just to make sure they were still friends. A casual hello, that’s all. As she walked towards the group, she had a feeling something wasn’t right. Lydia had that feeling because as she walked closer, she could smell a faint cigarette odor coming from their direction.
She got scared a little, but she tried to keep her smile straight. Jason doesn’t smoke, she told herself silently. She tried to imagine Jason smoking, and gratefully couldn’t. It calmed her, and she wasn’t as nervous. Lydia’s eyes were on Jason the whole time, until she glanced over at the others. They looked laid back; like they didn’t care a thing about what’s happening in the world. And one of them had an ugly yellow set of teeth. It wasn’t one of those grills. Just yellow teeth.
Who were these people? Were they from Hillcrest High School? Lydia didn’t recognize anyone, apart from Jason. As she got there, she waved hello at him. He whispered something to the guys, and one of them snickered something like, “Hey, dis yuh girl?” Lydia frowned. Why was Jason hanging out with these strangers?
Jason walked towards her, and everything around her was forgotten for a minute, including the strangers hanging around at the fence. Also, including the strong smell of smoke omitting from Jason himself.
“Hey,” he said.
“Hey, what have you been doing lately?” Lydia tried to say casually, but it came out in a serious way.
“Nothing, ok?” Jason snapped. Lydia was surprised, and she returned to reality. Jason doesn’t snap at people, especially his best friend. Her eyebrows furrowed a little. Did the scent of smoke just get stronger, or was something wrong with her nose?
“Okay, whatever. Do you wanna head to school?” I said, and started to walk. Jason
