Daddy's Girl (Part 1)

Daddy’s Girl
“Susanna!” shouted Mrs. Whitney, “Daddy’s home! You’d better come down and greet him!” But she didn’t even have to tell her six-year-old daughter, for she was halfway down the steps in the big mansion. Susan always looked out the window for Mr. Whitney whichever day he was expected to come home, for her father was a sailor, a very important sailor. He was Captain James Whitney, the same man who saved many lives of other sailors. So Mr. Whitney was not home very often. Her father threw the door open just as Susanna reached the last step, and she bounded up to her daddy and he picked her up and held her as she gave him a big kiss on his cheek.
“How’s my little princess?” he asked.
“Oh, Daddy, I missed you!” came the reply.
“Well, at least I wasn’t gone for too long!” he exclaimed as he set her down gently and hugged his wife. “Where’s Caroline?” he asked suddenly.
“Oh, Nick had a birthday party, and she wanted to go. She will be home tonight. I was going to go pick her up at eight,” said Mrs. Whitney.
“Okay. Now, Princess, what do you want to do?” he asked Susan. He winked at Mrs. Whitney who looked at them and smiled.
“Oh, Daddy, let’s play Candyland!” she answered without hesitation.
“Alright then! Up we go!” he held out his hand and she took it and they walked up the carpeted steps together. “Where do you want to play?” asked Mr. Whitney.
“Let’s play in my room!” exclaimed Susan. And off they went.

At quarter till eight, Mrs. Whitney took off to pick up Caroline and Susan was sitting on the floor playing with her dolls.
