Saving The World

Everyone was holding their breath. I handed the switch to my father but he shook his head. His breathing had slowed down now that we were back in our own ship. I stared around at the men all around me. I was the lone female amongst all the fighters.

I looked down at the detonator and took a deep breath. As I moved my finger to the switch, I turned to look at my father. He nodded his head. I flipped the switch and everyone turned to look out the window and saw an explosion like a super nova.

There was cheering and wine was being pushed into my hand. The war was finally over. I could breathe easily now. I sat down next to my commander and he smiled at me.

“You mother will be so proud, Samantha,” he whispered. He picked up a phone and dialed a few numbers. “Mr. President. The war is over. We’ve won. You want to speak to the hero? Sure, she is sitting right next to me.”

The commander handed me the phone and I took it. “Mr. President?”

“Congratulations, young lady,” he said. “You have just saved the world. Your father will be proud to hear it.”

“I think he is,” I responded as I smiled at the commander.

“We will see you when you get back, hero,” stated the President.

I hung up the phone and hugged my father. The war was over. We could go home. Everything was grand. “I am proud of you. I always have been,” said Father. “I love you, sweetie.”

“I love you too, dad,” I responded. “Mum will be happy to see that we both are still alive.” And I laughed all the way back to earth. My home where there was no war and no one to save. No more aliens to worry about. Just me, Father, Mother, and Jack. Life is good.
