"Happily Ever After"
A white cloud of dust permeated through the hot kitchen, on the floor beneath it lay two laughing girls. They where both barely 16 years old, and the tears that streamed down there face where that of joy and not sorrow. The cloud of dust that thinned more and more each second was nothing more than a bag of flour that had ripped while they engaged in a playful fight. They had been baking in the the kitchen, which was a rarity. Adinines mother, the owner of the palace they where currently occupying, would never allow her to cook. She had always told adenine that proper young ladies left things like that to the servants. However, Adenines mother was on a a trup until tommrow, and the cook had given her free reign of the kitchen.
Well to say "free reign" is un understatement. Alavanda, the cook, had told them to have fun if they wanted but to not make a mess. They had sworn not to, but apparently that had not worked. As the young girls now look around the kitchen, a small giggle escaped there lips. It looked like a giant war scene in there, not a kitchen, and Adenine was thrown into another giggle fit at just the sight of her friend laying next to her. Adenine stood up and looked around the kitchen finally realizing the complete mess they had made, and the giggles she was harboring quickly changed to an expression of doom and displeasure.
"Well, its not....to much of a mess," said Mabel the other your girl in the kitchen, cracking a smile. She was Adenines best friend, and the two of them where inseperable. Partners in crime, they never did anything without each other. If something was done that shouldnt have been done, you can be sure that it was Mabel and Adenines fault. Although it was always Mabels ideas, not that she would ever admit it.Adenine chuckled at Mabels remark and continued to try to dust the flour and caked food off of her clothes, but it was impossible. She sighed looking around the kitchen, more grateful than usual that her mother wasnt home.
The fight would have never broken out if Mabel hadn't "accidentally" cracked an egg on Adenines back. She had just smiled smugly as Adenine sqeualed, and when she refused to cut it out, the only other choice adenine had was to retaliate. After that there was no going back, the eggs went flying, cake mix, and choclate icing went flying through the air. Somehow they had both ended up on the floor laughing so hard they couldnt breathe. That was the thing about there friendship they like the most, that sometimes they could escape reality and just be together. They always came back to it though, and it was always Adenine that was worried about the consequences, not Mabel.
Infact Mabel was the one lying on the floor with her hands behind her head watching as Adenine attempted to clean the mess they had made, without any progress. It was so typical of Mabel though that Adenine didnt think anything of it, Mabel wasnt a worry. She liked to live life, as if it where going to be gone in the next five seconds or so. That was one of the things Adenine admired about her. She wished she could live like that, but everytime she tried, she ended up worried.
As Adenine vigoursly scrubbed the cabinet with no hopes of it becoming any cleaner, she heard Mabel stand up and being to dust herself off. Adenine grumbled to herself as she realized that it would take forever to clean this mess up, and she was so sure that Alavanda would come in and see it. Then she would be banished from the kitchen forever. Adenine had a bad habit of letting her mind wander, she always thought the worst scenarios in her head, and then they where all that she could think about.
Mabel chuckled to herself as she listened to Adenine grumble. It was always the same, she worried until she had a headache, and then, she worried some more. Mabel stepped up beside Adenine and grabbed the towel out of her hand. "Adenine, you dont have to please anyone and you especially dont have to please your mother. The only person you have to please is yourself. Dont worry so much." Adenine smiled, If anyone knew that it was her greatest fear to displease her mother, it was Mabel. All Adenine wanted to do was have her mother proud of her, for atleast once in her life. Although she learned over the years, that it was hard to please a woman of royalty.
Mabel grinned wickedly at Adenine, and started to tickle her. Mabel could only be serious for a few seconds at a time, her nature was to goofy. Adenine only squealed widly and Mabels favorite game. She loved to aggervated Adenine, and Mabel knew that she could stand to be tickled. Adenine took off running to the other side of the kitchen stopping in front of one of the many small storage compartments they had. She just smiled as Mabel calmly approached her swearing a truths. Mabel never called a truth she meant, she just did it to get on Adenines good side again. For some reason it always worked, Adenine loved being around her, everything felt so carefree, so happy, and so light.
A moment later they heard doors slam and footsteps starting to click toward the kitchen. Adenines face fell as she looked around the kitchen, and without much thought she shoved Mabel and herself into the small storage compartment where they where pinned against each other, blanketed in darkness. It only took a second for the two girls to realize how close they where to each other. Adenine could feel Mabels breath on her neck, and the curves of her body pressed up against hers. She closed her eyes as she listened to Mabels breath become rapid.
"Adenine," whispered Mabel breathlessly as she pushed herself closer to Adenine. She raised her hand and pulled loose the pins that would let Adenines long blonde hair fall down her back. As she ran her fingers through it, she smiled at the soft moan that escaped Adenines lips.
"Mabel, Please, Dont," She protested with a breath in between each word. She tried to say more, but Mabels finger covered her lips silencing her. "Shh...Adenine its alright." Mabel could feel the other girls entire body shake. She snaked her arms around Adenines waist and pulled her even closer. Mabel knew Adenine was terrified, there had been countless moments when they where thrown together like this. Adenine always pulled away from her though, terrified.
To Adenine this was impossible, she would not under any circumstances give into these moments. How could she? They where unheard of, not normal, not allowed and Adenine knew that. Although she couldnt for the life of her, understand why Mabel did this to her. She didnt get why her legs weaked and her heart raced, and why she wanted nothing more then for Mabel to never stop holding her, she wanted nothing more than to be kissed. She would not let this get to her though, she was raised as a proper young girl, and now that she was sixteen, her mother would surely be setting her up for marriage. She would not let Mabel kiss her, she was certain of that, but for some reason, she yearned for it.
Mabels eyes had now adjusted to the dark and she could see the outline of Adenines face, and she knew all to well what the expression on it was. She brushed a stray blonde her out of Adenines eyes and looked at her quizically. "You think to much Adenine, " she said then leaning in close to her face she whispered in her ear "just feel." Adenine went weak in Mabels arms and buried her face in her neck. She weaved her hands through Mabels black hair, and did all she could to keep herself from crying. When she felt calm enough to look at Mabel she tilted her head up and looked in her eyes, all the while her hands still weaved in her hair. "Mabel, my dear, we cant be together, like this, not now, not ever."
Mabel just grinned "Adenine, you think to much!" she said in a mocking sing song voice. Adenine chuckled, "As i've been told by you a dozen times." Mabel smiled as she felt Adenine finally relax in her arms. "I told you Adenine, just feel." Adenine looked back up at her shyly through her bangs, " but, what if i dont know how to...feel."
Mabel smiled, "I can show you." The wicked grin that flashed across Mabels face made Adenines stomach flutter. She closed her eyes and leaned against Mabel, finally letting go of any resistance she felt. Mables heart began to race, she couldnt belive this was happening. She was standing there with Adenine in her arms, and for once in her life, she was scared. Adenine was begging to be kissed, just like she always wanted to kiss her, but Mabel was terrified. She took and deep breath and looked at Adenine, with her eyes closed and her lips slightly parted. The little sighs she made every now and then sent chills down Mabels spine. She lifted up Adenines chin and as if almost in slow motion, she placed her lips against the other girls. A soft moan escaped both of there lips, and for a moment the whole world disappeared. It was as if, there was nothing but her and Adenine.
The only thing left for Adenine to do was feel, and the feeling she felt was unlike any other in the world. It was pure passonate extasy, and she never felt anything like it before. It was almost as if her and Mable where one person, and she felt like she was falling, really fast to the ground. Before she hit it though, Mable was there to catch her, she felt it in her heart, but maybe she was really falling.
Adenine and Mabels passonate moment was ruined by a scream that seemed to echo in the kitchen. "ADENINE CLAIRE! WHERE ARE YOU!," screamed the voice. Almost instantly She through herself agains the storage room door as far away from Mabel as possible, but unfourtanately in the tiny closet "far" wasnt really that far. When the door was flung open by the owner of the voice, the both came tumbling out in a heap, letting a squeak out, and landing entangled in each other. When Adenine finally looked up the person above her she recited with the most pitiful voice "Hello Mother."
Mabels eyes widened and she stood up, extending a hand to pull Adenine up with her. As Adenine stood in from of her angry mother she attempted to smooth her dress, that was now wrinkled beyond help. When she finally looked up, the anger in her mothers face was enough to make her sudder. The tension between the two of them was undeniable, and Adenine, was terrified. Her mother wasnt a mean woman, she was just the kind of person that made you feel like a complete failure. Adenine hated feeling like a failure.
Mabel looked back and forth between the both of them. "Mrs.Elizabeth, I can not say how glad I am to see that you have returned from your trip..safely." As she spoke she curtsed, sending a cloud of flour into the air. Adenines mother just glared at Mabel, obviously not amused. The only thing Mabel could do was grin sheepishly and sink back into quietness.
"Adenine Claire," she said sharply. "How many times must i be disapointed in you, before you learn to grow up? I leave for one day and your already acting as if you where nothing more than that of a common folk. For god sake you think you'd have grown up some now that your sixteen." Adenine glanced at the floor and bit her lip so she wouldnt cry. "Mabel", she said now turning her attention to the other girl in the room, "I do think it is time for you to go home now." Mabel nodded and made her way across the kitchen to leave. Adenine watched out of the corner of her eye as Mabel merely stepped outside the doorframe. She didnt want to miss the rest of the conversation.
"Now Adenine as for you. I am highly disapointed. Not only where you doing servant work, but you where flinging your food around like a child would. Is that what you are Adenine? A child? Shall I have someone watch over you so I can be sure you wont misbehave? On top of all that you where hiding in the storage room from my calls, honestly you didnt expect me not to be able to find you."
"Mother.i.didnt.." Adenine stammered, But was quickly interupted. Her mother hardly ever listened to a word she said. It was better to be quiet then try to get her point across.
"I dont want your excuses Adenine. All I want is for you to change your clothes and get yourself cleaned up. Maybe you can make yourself look like the royalty you are, if you try hard enough." She let her words linger in the air, as if hoping them to sink into Adenines memory. "Anyway, your father has invited a guest over for dinner. Maybe if we marry you off, you'll grow up."
The word "marry" dropped Adenine and Mabels stomachs at the same time. It was as if someone had slapped both of them in the face. Adenine quickly stole a glance at her bestfriend, and saw the distraught in her face, that must have been a mirror image to her own. Adenine watched as Mabel fought back tears, Mabel never cried, ever.
"One more thing, Adanine, that girl is a bad influence on you. I may seriously have a talk about this with your father. Royalty she may be as well, but she is nothing more than trash." Her mothers words spit out at her like a knife in the gut. She didnt like to hear people talk about Mabel that way. It took all she had not to spit out at her mother. She watched as Mabel slinked out of the doorframe, and then she turned to leave for her own room.
Chpt. 2
Adenines house was truly on of splendor and beautifuly lavish peices. It was huge, Adenine wasnt sure if she had even been in all the rooms that covered the house. Her favorite room, was hers of course, it was more like three really. With a room for music and one for art. Not to mention her huge bathroom and her giant closet. She had her own house in the upstairs left wing. She liked it that way, it was quiet where she was.
She had taken a bath, and put herself in a dress more suitable for meeting prospective husbands. Now she sat in front of the mirror combing her long blonde ringlets in a bun, the way all the women of royalty wore it. She sighed into the mirror as she placed the last pin in place. She had never really liked the way she looked, but she was a beautiful girl. When her hair was down, which it almost always was around Mabel, it reached to the bottom of her spine falling in soft waves. The dress she wore at the moment was a sky blue color laced with tan. It flowed all the way to the floor, which allowed her to get way with not wearing shoes, Adenine hated shoes. Dangling across her chest was a diamond A that feel perfectly into her abundant clevage. Her creamy skin that was exposed sparkled when hit with the right amount of light. She had always been an extremely fair skinned girl.
She picked up the glass bottle that set on the dresser, and sprayed it twice. It was the scent Mabel liked, and always complemented her on. Adanine bit her lip as she thought of her best friend. She crossed her room to the large window that over looked the valley, and it took all she had not to cry. The window faced the lake, the one that stood in between Adenine and Mabels homes. They had both lived in the same valley since birth, they had always been best friends.
It was not her mothers threat that had made Adenine upset, that was all to common to her. Once ever few months her mother did the same thing whenever they got caught doing somehting not allowed, and with Mabel that was all the time. Thankfully though they didnt always get caught. Mabel was cunning, and she came up with some ideas that would get her in trouble without a doubt. Luckily though, she was sneaky to.
The real reason Adenine had tears in her eyes was the fact that she wasn't quiet sure what had happened between her and Mabel earlier that day.True she had been in the same situation on numerous occasions. She had never let it go this far though, she had never let Mabel kiss her. It was just that Mabel was a girl, and Adenine had never heard of such a thing. Women feel in love with men, and thats how it was suppose to be. She cared for Mabel, more than anyone in this world, that was true, but she wasnt in love with her. She was in love with her for the simple fact that it was impossible for two girls, to share such intamicy.
Adenine was jarred from her thoughts by the knocking on her door. Her mother walked in smiling plesantly. Her moods floated around quiet often, and no one knew how she would act.
"Adenine dear, your fathers guest for you is soon arriving, please come with me to greet him." Adenine nodded and followed her mother through the door. "Adenine you must never forget today, on the Ninth of May, you may have found love." Her mother smiled as she hopped down the stairs excitedly. Adenine smiled too, but for a reason her mother knew nothing about. Adenine did not love Mabel, but she wouldnt forget today, ever.
Chpt 3.
Across the lake, in the grass, sat Mabel, wearing nothing but her undergarmets. She sighed as she felt the wind blow through her straight jet black hair. In her emerald green eyes, though, sparkled jealousy. She watched as a young man stepped out of a horse drawn carriage and was greeted by Adenine and her family. Mabel grumbled as she thought about him spending dinner all night with Adenine, she already didnt like him.
It was the sight though of Adenine that caught her breath in her throat. She watched her as she slowly became more visible under the dim lit sky. Mabel couldnt see her as clear as she would have like to, but an outline was enough. Mabel was fascinated by Adenine, and you would have to be blind not to see it. She would do anything for the young girl. Mabel watched her as she was the last to climb the stairs to enter the front door, before she stepped in, she turned around, searching the valley, for Mabel. It brought a grin to Mabels face, and she watched the door until she was certain Adenine was gone for sure.
Mabel was certain that she was in love with her. She did not understand her feelings at first, that was for sure, but after awhile it became clear. She was in love with Adenine, after she figured that out, she didnt think the feelings she had where wrong anymore. She knew that girls did not love each other like men and women do, but maybe they didnt have to. Maybe girls could love each other like girls are suppose to, and maybe it was better than a man and a woman. She wasnt sure of any of that though, the only thing she was sure of was Adenine. It was constant througout the day that Mables mind wandered to the events of earlier. She knew that Adenine didnt love her, well maybe she might love her, but she was sure that Adenine was terrified of what she did fell.
Mabel was the braver of the two of them, which meant that she constantly watched over Adenine. She made sure that she was always safe, and always smiling, and always had what she wanted. Someone had to take care of her, at since her mother treated her the way she did. Mabel never become more angry then when she heard Adenines mom say the things she said to her. Mabel had spent many years watching Adenine do everything to please her mother in ways that where impossible. If only she could see her daughter the way Mabel saw her, she would truly love her. Truth was though, that Mrs. Elizabeth was royalty, and as everyone always says, its hard to please royalty.
Mabel had proof of this popular theory. It was only a few years ago that Mrs. Elizabeth and Mabels mother had been best friends. Just as Adenine and her where. It was the reason Adenine and Mabel where always together, they're mothers where. That was why it was odd, when Mrs. Elizabeth declared her mother "not worthy of her roayal-ness." They had stopped talking as you would expect, but they couldnt seperate Adenine and her, and nobody really wanted to anyway. The friendship they had kept the two of them quiet busy. If they where running around together atleast they werent under each others feet. Well atleast not until Mabel came up with one of her schemes.
Mabel laid on her back and placed her hands underneath her head. Her mothers reaction to the state she was in when she came home was just the opposite of Adenines. She just chuckled as she looked Mabel up and down. She was truly something to set her eyes upon. Mabel just grinned sheepishly at her mother and walked off to change. Mabel loved her mother, and she loved her home, but something always felt like it was missing, something that seemed there whenever she was around Adenine. Tears pricked her eyes at the thought, of Adenine being married. She quickly brushed them away, with the images that had filled her mind. Mabel didnt cry and Mabel didnt think to much. Thats what everyone expected of her, and thats what she would do.
Chpt 4
Adenine sat at the end of the table horizontal from her date. She pushed her peas across her plate, and let out an exasperated sigh. Her mother nailed her with a deathly look and she sat up as straight as she could and attempted to listen to the things her "date" was rambling about. Adenine didnt dislike him, he was an alright boy. He stood a little taller than her with sandy blonde hair, and green eyes. He was quiet good looking, but he was so..boring and predictable. Adenine knew the things he was saying where just to get her parents acceptance. She didnt blame him though, everyone wanted in the royal family, it was just a thing.
She found it impossible to keep her mind on the conversation that was being had.
