"Is that-?" I heard as I turned to see a girl wearing worn out jeans and a maroon long sleeve shirt ask the guy next to her, as I walked by. I could feel both of their eyes following my every move.
"Wow! I can't believe that's -" Another guy commented before his girlfriend hit his arm. I smiled to myself.
My name is Mem Marie and my plan is now in order and moving quickly with wildfire. I approached my one and only friend, Kaitlin Marsh. I met her during my freshmen year, both of us were outcasts, but not for long this year.
When I met Kaitlin she had braces and very thick glasses. Her hair was icky but her personality hit me hard. She was funny - really funny! You would never be able to tell just by looking at her, but once you got to know her.
Today Kaitlin looked like any other teenager, her long dark hair pulled back into a ponytail. She wore clothes which looked great on her. In the freshman year she wore clothes which were far to big, and hung on her, they made her look over weight. Today she wore her favouite midnight blue dress which hung down to her knees. Made her look slim, but not anorexic. The dress looked great on her..
Everything my school knew was about to change and no one was prepared for it. Over the summer I met someone, someone who was popular and saw me as me and not the dork with the glasses. I was now the girlfriend of our school's football quarterback.
"Mem!" Kaitlin ran up to me but stopped short. I could tell she knew something was different.
I laughed at the expression on her face.
"Hey Kaitlin. I have something to tel -" But before I could finish my sentence large hands came over my eyes and moist, full lips came down on mine. As our lips pressed on each other, I heard Kaitlin gasp.
When we broke apart I turned and was face to face with Greg Jager, my boyfriend. He had brown hair that was cut to just below his ears, beautiful green eyes and nice tan skin. Greg wore his jersey shirt number 7 and jeans.
I glanced back at Kaitlin who, amazingly, was still gawking at us. Her blue eyes were so wide you could have fit pancakes on them and they would disappear.
"Greg, this is my best friend Kaitlin Marsh." Greg nodded toward her.
Kaitlin blinked a couple of times before coming out of her mini coma. "Hi." She gave me a dirty look that told me I had better explain quickly.
"Kate, this is Greg. I met him over the summer at the Inn. We are sort of together now." I watched her every move to see how she accepted the news.
Kate smiled. "Well, that's great for both of you. Mem, I'll see you at lunch ok?" I nodded and Kaitlin merged into the crowd of students around us.
During the summer the local beach opened a small shack that served burgers, fries and drinks to the people coming and going to the beach. It was called the Maple Green Inn. I started working there, taking orders and that is how I came across Greg - alone for once from his jock friends from school.
Greg and I started talking and I got to know him, he really did not want to play football but his father made him for it was his dream before he had hurt his knee during a game. Greg's true dream was to become a doctor.
When I had first met Greg I thought he would be just like the other jocks I had seen at school - a jerk. But surprise surprise, he was complete opposite. He made jokes, cared about how you felt, but most of all was honest about himself. He explained that he wanted to become a doctor so he could help cure cancer.
"In fact, I don't care which cancer it is, I just want to cure it!" He told me while eating fries and sipping a diet coke. I was amazed at how he was so open with me.
About two weeks before school started, I decided to give contacts a try and it seemed to work better then glasses. That was when Greg really took notice to my eyes. He had told me that I had pretty eyes but the glasses seemed to hide that fact about me.
Greg and I kissed good-bye before heading to class. I could not wait until lunch to talk to Kaitlin. When I was on my way toward the table she and I usually sat at, I got pulled aside by one of the bitchiest girls at school.
I struggled to be let go, but the girl had her grip on my arm. Her long, red nails were digging into my skin, marking them for later to be black and blue.
I glared at the prissy bitch.
"How did you get Greg, when I couldn't even get him?" Her voice was higher then normal. I almost laughed in her face.
Grace Fran was one of the most popular girls in the Junior class. She always dated the jocks and had her own small circle of friends. Today Grace had on of of her most famous outfits. It was her bright yellow low cut tank top with jean shorts. You could tell just by looking at her that she is not wearing a bra. She was basically the slut of the school.
I pulled away from her death grip and glared back into her hazel eyes. "Why should I tell you?' I challenged her.
Grace opened her mouth but shut it almost right after. She thought for a moment. "Because if you don't, I'll make your life miserable." With that said she stalked off toward the English building.
I laughed as I watched her for a moment before heading back towards my lunch table. I saw Kaitlin eating a tuna sandwich with a bottle of water next to it.
"The bitch came and flipped on me a few minutes ago." I informed my friend. She gave me an odd look.
"You mean Grace?" I nodded. "What did she want? Oh and what was with you and Greg this morning?"
I smiled, remembering the sweet kiss. "Grace was pissed that I'm with Greg and not herself." My eyes went behind Kate and to where Greg was with his friends. They were sitting at one of the tables in the center of the cafeteria. It looked like they were laughing at something, but I found Greg's eyes looking for mine.
"As for Greg and I, we got to know each other this summer. We decided not to say anything until school started up again. Sorry Kate, are you mad at me?"
Kaitlin shook her head. "I'm happy for you. Now you're popular! And now I can be in your circle." It sounded like she was kidding but I was unsure.
I still had my eyes on Greg when she said this, it made me take them off him and look back into her eyes. "Kaitlin! You know I love you and I'm never going to leave you for another group of friends." I may have changed physically but I was the same person inside.
When Grace threatened I knew I could handle her. However, if she had asked me to jump last year, I would have asked how high? This year is going to be different and I would do whatever I had to to get rid of Grace and her attitude.
Kaitlin finished her sandwich and stood up to throw away the wrapper. I took this time to go get myself a lunch. I had always watched my weight so I bought a salad with a light ranch dressing and an apple. I had brought my own bottled water. When I arrived back to the table greg was there talking to Kaitlin, who looked still surprised that he was even there.
Greg's eyes sparkled when he saw me. "Hey babe." He said, his voice was deep. His eyes glanced down at what was on my tray. "Once you're done eating do you want me to walk you to class?" His voice was gentle but he eyes were excited.
I simply said "Sure." and sat down. Greg sat down next to me and began to talk about his classes. I listened but all I could notice was how Kaitlin did not look very happy. I decided to pull her aside as soon as I could so we could talk.
"... So anyway, Mr. Heni was all pissed off at Mike Hoff because he would not respond when his name was called." Greg laughed. "You see, Mr. Heni and Mike are next door neighbors so he knew Mike was really there!"
Greg looked at the two of us and sensed that neither of us were really paying attention to a word he was saying.
"Kaitlin? I want to talk to you." I said. I gave Greg a look that I was sorry and would be back. Kaitlin and I got up and headed outside to the huge concrete courtyard that had only two live trees.
Kaitlin stared at me, as if she was trying to read my mind. In a stern voice she asked, "What do you want?"
I was shocked at her tone. "Hey! What's your problem?"
Kaitlin just shook her head. "I just have a bad feeling about Greg. That's all."
I gave her a questioning look. "What are you talking about?"
She then explained that when I went to go get lunch Greg had came over to find me but ended up talking to her. I nodded to show I was listening. Kaitlin then said something that nearly made me collapse to the hard ground.
"He tried to make a pass at me." My mouth was a gap just waiting for a fly to come in and kill me from this horror.
"Are you sure?" I asked, in a serious tone. Kate nodded slowly.
"Yes. He came right up to me and whispered in my ear, 'You know, sometimes I look at you and I wonder what someone as beautiful as yourself does hanging out with Mem.' Then when he saw you coming he started talking about Mr. Heni," Kaitlin said, showing no sign of lies in her eyes.
I nodded. I took a deep swallow and quickly turned back toward the doors and entered the cafeteria. I swiftly went up to Greg and just started screaming. Students and teachers who were still eating stopped chewing and talking to stare.
"How dare you!" I pushed his shoulder. "How could you be such an ass?" His eyes glazed over, lit like fire and then he exploded back at me.
"Excuse me!? What the hell climbed up your ass and died?" He yelled into my face. I backed off as quickly as I came up to Greg.
I shook my head. "I - I just can't believe you." I then left Greg standing there looking around at his friends who were just staring.
Unknown to me, Kaitlin had been watching and laughing. "What a dork." She muttered under her breath. Kaitlin then walked off to her next class smiling to herself.
Another Junior, Jane Bony heard what Kaitlin had told me and knew she had to tell me what she had just seen. Jane I were always friends but never real close. However, I knew I could trust her with anything.
I was real pissed at Greg. I could not help it. He seemed so different when I met him, but it turns out he is just a jerk too. I sat agasint the wall and only looked up when I heard someone say my name. When I did, I saw Jane.
"Hey Mem," She slid down next to me. "I have something to tell you." I could tell this was hard for her, she was looking at her feet and twitching her fingers.
"What's up Jane?" I asked, my eyes focused on hers.
She looked around to see if anyone was close enough to hear her, they weren't. "Well, I heard what Kaitlin said to you, about Greg. And I wanted to tell you that she was watching you and laughing. Then she said something under her breath. I could not catch it though." She looked right at me. "I'm sorry."
My hands were now clutched and I was even more pissed, but I believed Jane. I thanked her and got up to find Greg again to apologize. To my amazement, he was nowhere to be found. I sighed as the belle rang for class.
"I will have to catch him after class, I just hope he will talk to me." I thought.
I could barely concentrate on what my english teacher was blabbering about. I just knew I had messed up and needed to let Greg know I was sorry. When the belle rang an hour and a half later, I rushed out and searched around for Greg. I finally spotted him over by the stairs of building three, talking to a couple of the other football players. I walked up and stood for a moment before he faced me.
"Greg, I wanted to -"
"No! I don't want to hear it Mem." Greg cut me off. I tried several times to say that I was sorry but he just kept ignoring me or cut me off.
In a rush to be heard I blurted, "Greg! I'm so sorry. Kaitlin was being a bitch and gave me bad information!" I gasped for breath. Greg had paused to see if I would continue, I did. "She told me you tried to hit on her and everything and I just flipped. I really like you and I don't want to be without you." I had tears in my eyes.
Greg dropped his backpack and gave me a hug. "It's ok Mem, I understand." He whispered in my right ear. "I really like you too." He held my shoulders. "Now what did Kaitlin say to you exactly?" He asked as he picked up his bag and I started walking with him and his friends. He turned off down another hallway after saying their good-byes. I explained to him what the bitch had said.
"I think she is just jealous that I have you and she doesn't." I commented. Greg nodded thoughtfully.

"Grace was pissed that I'm with Greg and not herself." - LOL! I know you don't mean it this way, but when I first read that, I thought you were talking about Grace's lesbian jealousy. ....I think I watch too much Jerry Springer....
....
Wow, this was EXACTLY the sort of story I was looking for. What a great high-school drama! I was completely caught offguard by Kaitlin's betrayal, and the narrator's subsequent reaction was really believable.
This is a great first chapter. I would have loved to have read more, as the story doesn't seem completely finished. What's up with Kaitlin? Why did Greg start dating her? What's Grace's revenge going to be for being dissed?
Excellent job. -

Liked it
Hey, this reminds me of the kinda stories I write, really liked it. Kate, was her so called best friend, right?
A few suggestions below--
I walked slowly toward my school. It was the first day of school and I was finally an upperclassmen. Even so, I did not want to be here. No one likes me and they all have their own little groups. However, this year was going to be very different. (I walked slowly towards the school, being my first day back. Finally an upperclassmen, even so I didn't want to be here.
