Salt in a pepper shaker- a cardinal sin?

The monotonous filling of salt and pepper shakers was starting to give me a monster of a headache. Why? Why the hell was I here, doing this, of all things? I didn't know then...I still don't. All I know for sure is that it pays the bills, and with the life I lead at the moment, constantly avoiding temptation from alcohol, that's all I need. A job which pays the bills, with little cash left over, so that I can't blow it on the evil booze.

I glanced at the clock. Ten minutes to five- ten minutes and I'd be outta there. Ten minutes, and I'd be at home on the couch, relaxing with a glass of water and a paracetamol to ease the steady pounding in my aching head.

Dang! Salt in a pepper shaker....God, Granger'll kill me for that. Empty shaker, take the shaker to the sink, wash it out, fill it with pepper. That's the best way to deal with it, before my apocalyptic demon of a boss appears from his office and roars at me for committing the most cardinal sin of all sins- putting salt in a pepper shaker.

That's a minor sin to most of you, and not even a sin to more of you....to my boss, it is the worst of sins. That and mixing the ketchup up with the strawberry ice cream sauce, which I've done before. That nearly got me sacked. If he finds out about this, I will definitely get the sack. Not that it would be a bad thing. I have hated Granger from the start, and our hatred is mutual.

His cold look greets me every morning. It is not dissimilar to that which is usually reserved for your average door to door salesman before you ever so politely tell them to buzz off.

Five o'clock! Woo-hoo! I'm out of here for another day. Wonder whether I'll come in tomorrow? Granger'll be lucky...

Author notes

Comes in part from a story which is still a work in progress, though I only took the character of Mr Granger from that piece.

"That's the best way to deal with it, before my apocalyptic demon of a boss appears from his office and roars at me for committing the most cardinal sin of all sins- putting salt in a pepper shaker." Best line!

This piece was chaste, over-exaggerated and extremely funny. Well written, it all flowed together and made you really feel the pain of the poor girl (I'm presuming girl?) At her dead end job.

    Perfect, I loved it!

This was funny. I love the exageration (pardon my spelling mistake, I'm sure I'm wrong here) of the boss's obsession with minute details... Good Job!

Thank you very much. I appreciate your comment. That's the trademark of Granger's character.

This reminds me of my job sometimes. One of my managers can be a major...humm...yeah!

But Sunday is my last day, so I don't have to worry about that.

This part of yoru story makes me want to read the rest.

    Thanks for entering.

Thanks for the applause. I appreciate the comment. Pity that the story that Mr Granger is a spin off from is currently in its fifteenth unfinished incarnation, otherwise I would share that here.
