A Highschool Horror {2}

Much to the dismay of the students chosen for the study, the 3:30 bell seemed to ring with a vengeance inside their minds. Each walked through the hall slowly, detesting seeing the cafeteria and the odd smile on Ms. Rivera’s face that send a chill down their spines. The three met in the commons outside of the cafeteria, dreading going inside. No one saw Ms. Rivera, which calmed them to a point. Sam looked around at the other students that got to leave the school and go to their homes and their families. She sighed, and looked down to her shoes.
“What are you three waiting out here for?” Ms. Rivera’s voice came from behind them. Their eyes all jumped to her. She was not alone. Two janitors had followed her, carrying a few blankets and pillows. Who knows where they had come from and why they thought that they were going to sleep in this place tonight? She gave her creepy smile. “I’ve brought you something’s to help you sleep. Now remember what I said, no trying to leave. Now, all I have to say is goodnight and good luck!” With that, she turned and started to walk off. The two janitors walked past the three and set the blankets down on some of the tables in the cafeteria. Without wanting to be told twice, Tobi and Sam went into the cafeteria with their things.
Nicole still stood in the commons, watching Ms. Rivera walk away. There was something weird about the way she talked, and her appearance was different from when she saw her last year. It was like strings through her were pulling the woman’s every motion, or like she was under a possession. It seemed as though she was going back into the office through the side door, but as Nicole watched on, the woman’s figure melted into the white painted brick wall like it was nothing but a hologram. After that sight that only Nicole had seemed to notice, she ran into the cafeteria to join Sam and Tobi.
It was just after nightfall, about eight, and the friends sat in the lunchroom, trying to keep up a conversation for the fear of silence falling between them. They had congregated at a table in the middle of the large room. The only lights that were illuminating the lunchroom were the few emergency lights in the ceiling and the two drink machines. When no one spoke, crickets could be heard outside in the picnic area, chirping away, happy that it was nightfall. Likewise could be said for the students.
“Well,” Sam said, standing up from the table, “I’m going to go look around. So far, I think it’s safe.” She stood up, only to have Nicole stand up beside her. By how fast the girl came to a standing position, there was no doubt that she was going to protest Sam going alone.
“You can’t go out there.” Nicole said, confirming Sam’s thoughts. “When Ms. Rivera left, I saw her go through that wall!” She pointed to where the women melted into the office.
“Okay, wait a second.” Tobi said, also taking to his feet. He put his hand out to make sure he got Nicole’s point across. “So she literally went through the wall? Through it? Like, whoosh?”
“Yes, like whoosh.” Nicole said. Sam gave a roll of her eyes, ignoring what the two were jabbering about. Yes, she was a firm believer of ghosts and the paranormal, but there was no way she was going to let all of that mess come to her mind in the place and situation that the three were in.
“Look, you’re all going insane.” Sam said. “This place isn’t haunted. I’ll be fine going out to the office to snoop, okay? I’m only going to be gone for a little while.” With that said and hopefully drilled into the others’ heads, Sam turned and walked out into the commons. The heavy darkness loomed through the wide space. It weighed down on her as she paced against the linoleum tiles towards the office. She opened the door, the hinges creaking quietly, something that Sam knew they never did before. Despite, she ignored it and walked through to find a room with a few good file cabinets. Lucky for her, the first room, the copy room, had four. Gold mine, Sam thought and took to the first cabinet.
Minutes passed by slowly as her fingers filed through the papers and folders. She found nothing of interest in the first three cabinets. Surprising, for what kind of history this school seemed to have. Reaching the last cabinet, Sam opened the first draw and began to thumb through its contents. At the very back of the drawer was a vanilla folder labeled ‘blueprints’. A smirk came to Sam’s face as she pulled the folder out of the cabinet and set it on top. She started to open the folder until suddenly there came a sound of chains dragging across the floor. She turned to see if there was someone there, either Tobi or Nicole playing a joke on her. To her surprise, no one was in the room. She walked out to the office, only to find that she was still alone. The rattling of the chains ceased, but echoed throughout the dense black that filled the room.
Sam shrugged and went back to the copy room and took the folder to the table in the middle of the room. She started to search through the papers inside. Sure enough, the myth of the school was true. Right there were the blueprints for the prison the school was meant to be. Sam wasn’t too much shocked to see this. She didn’t have any doubt before that it was true. But what she found next was something that sent her jaw to the table. Files of inmates. Execution dates. It was all here, the truth was found out. She had to tell the others. 1

Sam took the folder and ran out of the office, not even noticing the increased darkness from before. The others saw the pace at which she ran and met her half way into the cafeteria. “You’re not going to believe this.” Sam said, showing them the folder. She went to the nearest table, with Nicole and Tobi on her heals. Whatever Sam discovered was sure the make the whole night worse for them. Sam opened the folder and gasps came from the other two.
“So, it’s all true.” Tobi said, looking through the blueprints, then the files of the inmates. “Not only was it supposed to be a prison, it actually was one.” A cold sweat started to trickle down his forehead, noting that the boy was freaking out. He wasn’t much for scary things but this defiantly hit the nail on the head. He backed away from the table and ran out of the cafeteria, heading for the front doors. He knew they were locked but there was no way they couldn’t stop him from trying. He pulled on the handles but they wouldn’t budge. The sound of rattling chains filled his ears and he looked to his left to see a figure in the black of the hallway. His features were concealed in the darkness, except for the glowing white smile he held on his face. Tobi shook his head and looked away. When he turned back, the man was gone. The only thing that could be heard was the sound of chains.
