Under The Mask

Every night, I put on a costume for you

I dance around, trying to please the audience

Putting on a show, just to receive your acceptance

Why do I try so hard?

Why do I care so much?

Would you be smiling like you are if we were alone?

Would you smile like you do if no one was here to watch?

Do you really love me like you lead others to believe?

Do you really love me like you led me to believe years before?

No of course not

You just like acting

You're the real star

I just stand beside you, smiling; looking pretty

I'm just the trophy you display on a shelf

Because when people lower the curtain,

When the show is over and done,

I reveal what's under my mask

And you walk away...

Author notes

This is a poem that is inspired by the Madonna song, "Take A Bow", I guess. I was just bored and I feel like this a lot...

... I can see you wrote this 2 years ago... and haven't received a comment for the past year... but I have to tell you this: this is a great poem with a powerful meaning, I can tell you that and this is what I would call a masterpiece. Great stuff, I love it

    That was nice

I really liked this. You gave a lot of feeling in it, and I really can identify with you. I hope that you don't feel like this- It's never worth it. You should never waste yourself on someone who doesn't appreciate you- Because you deserve better than that I'm sure. Shallow people like that are very annoying. Sadly I know what it feels like to impress a guy who has been hot and cold. It stinks. I hope you feel better, but otherwise this was a nice poem. It had a nice flow and I read it easily. Keep writing poetry!

This is really good! And nice to know it was inspired by another song. There is just so many questions in this poem, and all answered with simplicity. Good Job! I liked it!
