List: Battlegrounds: A Novel

This is where I will be posting character outlines, brainstorming, and chapters from the novel I am writing for NaNoWriMo 2009.

Working title is Battlegrounds.

After the death of her parents in a fiery car-crash, Dixie Carmichael is certain her life is over. When her eccentric Uncle Wade, a retired FBI agent, agrees to take custody, Dixie mournfully packs up her beloved Ford and moves from her home in New Orleans, Louisiana, to her uncle's farm house in Alabama only to discover that her parents and her dreams aren't quite the only things that are dead.

Civil War Re-enactment doesn't seem to be the only action on the old battlefields - Legend has it that Colonel Grady, beheaded in battle, has forged a pact with the devil: if he beheads a virgin before the stroke of midnight on All Hallow's Eve, his soul will be returned, as will his head, and the fiend will be reincarnated and allowed to live out the rest of his natural life on Earth.

Meanwhile, the would-be headless horseman isn't alone in his haunts. A younger officer, Reginald Blackburn, who died of a shot to the chest, has made a similar pact: send the obsessed colonel to the fiery depths of Hell and it is he who will be given back his soul, and granted a second chance at life to prove himself worthy in the eyes of God.

Sparks fly as Reginald falls in love with the elegant Cajun girl and it is up to them to stop the headless Confederate soldier before midnight on Halloween.
