I will NOT apologize.

No, I haven't done anything wrong (this time... amazing, ain't it). 1

 2

But....3

I will not apologize, ever, for my choices in music. Sounds like a no-brainer, doesn't it? But, apparently, I'm some sort of idiot/moron/bitch/etc and so on for liking what I like, and not bowing to the pressure of others...just because I like who I like.  Yeah.. that sort of lost me, too. 4

I get bitched at because I like this singer/band, and not that one. News flash... I don't like Metallica. Okay?! I don't have to, either. 5

"Oh, but if you don't like Metallica, then you can't like  (insert band here)." 6

Says who? Huh?!?!? Is there some great music god somewhere making half-assed assumptions on what people should like and shouldn't like? Yes, I like Apocalyptica, and yes, they did release cello covers of Metallica... and yes, I do like the remakes... and no, that doesn't mean I have to like Metallica. (I think I may like to hit my head against the desk for a few minutes, though).7

And, I will not apologize, to anyone for liking Green Day... or Nickelback. You don't see me insulting someone because they like rap music, do you? Personally, I can do without it, but I would never assume to tell someone that they are listening to crap. 8

I am listening to a mixed playlist right now, which contains: Amanda Marshall, Godsmack, Apocalyptica, Maroon 5, Hedley, Janis Joplin, Staind, Serena Ryder, The Cult, T. Rex, Evanescence, Wolf Mother, Dion and the Belmonts, Roz Bell, Jully Black, Lee Aaron, Papa Roach, Van Morrison... and so forth. 9

I still listen to Duran Duran... and I like them. Same with a lot of 80s bands. Some of them I still like, while others I have to wonder just what the hell I was smokin' when I listened to them... which is odd, since I never actually did drugs in the 80s. 10

I like what I like. I don't expect others to like the same music. Variety is the key to life, and the one thing that can be counted on. 11

So, anyway... long rant short (or semi-short, as it may be). I shall never apologize for liking the music I like, nor shall I apologize for not liking the music that someone else likes. 12

Ever.13

Music is all opinionated. That is why you can't exactly rate music, exept on its popularity. Then the least people complain.

  • While I was reading this, I was thinking: you're like me. I don't like Metallica, but I like Apocalyptica and Maroon 5.

I was born in the 80s, so I wasn't actually able to enjoy music until the 90s...but I like music from just about any decade...and who's to say I can't?

I especially like how you ended this journal entry.

    Ever.

    That's a powerful word.

    The title caught my eye.

Its annoying when people bitch about what types of music you should and shouldn't like. Normally my response is to tell them to go fuck themselves.

I suppose that some people are just looking for a reason to fight.

my taste in music is eclectic at best, and people always think me a snob because I like classical and Opera best--hey,it's what moves me.You have the right to like what you like and not to like what you don't,it's the American way.

      True... but, I'm Canadian

I love opera. My thinking is that people are too uptight about music genres...

Yes, I find it hard to believe how many folks keep blaming, befriending, rejecting etc others just based on the music they like. I also hate how, just the other day, this guy was saying how it's a fact that a certain band sucks - now, I hadn't even heard that band, but tastes are subjective. & yesterday, my dearest friend was trying to convince me of something like that it's wrong to like buying new stuffed animals once in a while. huh... I seriously believe everyone is entitled to different tastes, provided they don't hurt anyone.
I like Evanescence, Maroon 5, Celine Dion, & Nickelback too. I also have a very wide range of preferences, I mostly listen to acoustic/pop/folk/rock, but I also like classical, most jazz, some house, electronic music, even some rap, country...
Actually, you might enjoy this if you have varied musical interests http://www.signalpatterns.com/splabs_music1.html It's some music experiment. I liked their music samples

Oh I was thinking of Apocalyptica the moment you mentioned Metallica. Ironically enough, I have their most recent video playing in youtube on another tab right now. Heh.

I know how you feel - when you love music for it's awesomeness rather than the genre, people can just not get it
