Review: 007: Quantum of Solice (Blu-Ray)

I like Daniel Craig as Bond; some don’t but I think he plays the part really well. With that in mind I had no qualms about picking up Quantum of Solace on blu-ray shortly after it was released. The movie after all is spectacular and every bit a great action movie. But does it do justice to a blu-ray launch? Read on and take whatever you will from this review.

Quantum of Solace opens, as we’ve come to expect, with a flashy opening title backed this time by the tones of Alicia Keys and Jack White singing ‘Another Way to Die’ and to be honest I’ve never really liked the opening Bond sequences (except for Casino Royale.) Once the movie begins however, we’re thrown straight into the action with a well shot car chase. Unfortunately this is the last time we’ll get a good look at one of Bond’s trademark Aston Martins as Fords seem to dominate the rest of the picture.

Setting my beloved car-candy aside, however, and all the other essential Bond elements are there. Daniel Craig returns as the young, brash lead while Judi Dench tries to keep him under control as M while in typical Bond style there are two ‘love interests’; Gemma Atkinson as MI6 agent Strawberry Fields and Olga Kurylenko as Camille Montes.
Other notable inclusions are Mathieu Amalric as main baddy Dominic Greene and David Harbour as CIA South American Section Chief while Jeffrey White and Giancarlo Giannini return as Felix Leiter and Rene Mathis.

Without spoiling the film itself, I will content myself with stating that the events of Quantum of Solace follow directly from those of Casino Royale which was a refreshing addition to the Bond series. Throughout the movie, the title character is trying to track down the illusive organisation originally revealed in Casino Royale.

Overall, the movie is a delightful watch. The undercurrent of environmentalism and environmental terrorism fits in excellently with the terrorism storyline of Casino Royale and thus I’d recommend Quantum of Solace to anyone who wants a continuation of that movie’s story.

The blu-ray extra features, however, leave a lot to be desired. Unlike some other movies that are currently available on the format, there’s nothing really special that you couldn’t see on a DVD. The in movie menu’s are a nice addition but, unlike movies like Iron Man, Quantum of Solace lacks a specially designed timeline when paused. A small feature it may be but it’s nice when the extra effort is put into a blu-ray release. Pick this up on blu-ray if you like but your unlikely to get the DVD price-difference worth of extras.

  • Whan I first read about All Journal on the Social Design website my interest was piqued. At first I viewed the possibility of sharing my thoughts in a blog-like fashion through an account that already existed as an exciting prospect; now, however, I wonder... 1 A journal, at least as I recognise the term, is an a

  • While surfing the net (well, letting twitter do most of the work) I came across the term ‘blovel.’ Seemingly it’s a cross between a novel and a blog in which the ‘chapters’ are posted in a blog like manner over a relatively short period of time. The ‘blovel’ site that I encountered this new concept on restricted memb

  • It seems odd to think about it but I suppose I should have outgrown my interest in dinosaurs by now. The thought occurred to me as I searched through the listing of dinosaur related books on the Watersones website and had to wait until the fourth page of listings before finding a title that wasn’t a children’s book (

Taking that my oldest fried, Simon, is a guy I met while in secondary school (sometime around third year) no-one really knows anything about me before the age of fifteen. • As with my earlier Anime/Manga entry, this is a place for me to keep track of the Blu-Ray disc movies that I currently own. I'd add DVD's but I've far to many of them and they'd cross over with the anime list. Can't wait until I get my first anime blu-ray (sad really, isn't it?) 1 Steg's Blu-Ray List 2 007: C

  • Haha, for those who don't know me well, or at all, I'm a pretty big anime and manga fan. However, all the sites I've visited in order to organise my collection have failed to impress me much. For that reason I'm going to use this journal post to keep track of all my anime and manga. 1 Anime 2 .hack//SIGN Com
